I know it. Chanter and Barb are worse off at that point as the Chanter isn't as sturdy as the Paladin and the Barb cannot hit a damn thing and is dirt napping. I have beaten this game on the highest difficulty and on ToI but those Paladins in the early game have always given me a hard time. I wish my Paladin was that effective in the early game. I would LOVE to see the attribute points on those Paladins of Berath have though. Are they higher level? cause they have ALWAYS been super tough and even a character with high Deflection gets hit A lot by them. They are super tanks (they are Paladins) have a very good ACC (which Paladins usually don't have that early) and have Zealous Focus, FoD and LoH

So just for the fun of it I assaulted Readrics Keep and went straight to the front door. I always play on PotD so there is obviously a lot of bad guys. One issue I have always had with my Paladin is the lack of being able to do ANYTHING if the frontline is somehow bi passed. I obviously remedy this by having a melee heavy group but he just feel USELESS if the frontline is somehow breached as his damage dealing capabilities even when he is speced for some damage isn't very good and there is obviously no threat mechanic in the game. The Paladin gets no knock down or any type of CC to try and help buddies disengage. I have re made my Paladin 100000 times and even if you have the Paladin with 20 PER in the early game and somewhat still in the late game his damage after FoD is neglible. ACC is so average that even with a 20 PER its still so so. If I was the AI I just wouldn't pay any attention to the Paladin and leave him for last. My disengagement attacks do hit hard as I always have good might but it still wouldn't be enough if the AI made a concentrated effort at getting to the backline. That being said if my frontline is solid he is AWESOME.

Ok so I just wanted to do something a bit weird. I have never played a mountain dwarf cause of their super limited racial but I am playing one now cause well Dwarf and I am for some reason obsessed with having oceans of hit points. He also has high Might so his damage and Fort will be freakin great. Hes going to be a Darcozzi Paladini hard ass Front liner with some support abilities/talents to set up my heavy melee dps crew. To make up for crap ACC that Paladins get and my 10 PER I will go one hander dammit have a super freakin high ACC and good might and I will definitely be able to secure kills with FoD this way. Might: 16 Con: 18 Dex: 8 (10 with enchants) Per: 10 Int : 10 (12 with helm) Res: 16 Abilties: 1. Lay on Hands 3. Zealous Focus for melee party 5. Flames of Devotion 7.Liberating Exhortation (Talent to give it +10 ACC at level 9: Coordinating Attacks ( coupled with Hard Strike or Shame and Glory for more ACC for my dps monk or fighter..I am really missing Reviving Exhortation here) 11. Righteous Soul 13. Sacred Immolation (low INT means the AOE isn't as good as my 16 Int Paladin but it hits harder).

You have found the issue with Paladin. He needs too many stats to be a real damage dealer. He can definitely Alpha Strike (kill shots) with FoD but the class will never be a real dpser (its my favorite class mind you). Once both Flames of Devotion is used up even with those stats your DPS will be average. Best you can do is be a sturdy front liner who holds the line and adds competent damage while not folding like a stack of cards in order to let other party members to the real damage dealing. Leave your INT dumped if you must get a 10 CON and have a 13 DEX. That's IMO.

Did it on PotD. High save tanks like Paladins save the day in those encounters. They stay active and don't get CCed (or for very little of the time) and are able to engage the spirits in order to buy the fully CCed party members time. My PC Paladin and Pallegina were invaluable there on my PotD/ToI run.

Hard or PoTD now?

Deprive the Unworthy and Arcane Dampener...
Torm51 replied to Torm51's question in Pillars of Eternity: Technical Support (Spoiler Warning!)
dammit alright. I will skip the talent. I don't want to Cheese my TC play through. -
Ya this happened to me on my first play through too lol

They are removing immunities temporarily from creatures. Not damage immunities but status effect immunities such for example if you hit the Sky Dragon with Deprive the Unworthy or Arcane Dampener you can knock her down and blind her. Is this intended? are their status immunities buffs? I hope so lol!

I wouldn't dump anything on a Paladin. That's just me. I know you are going for a damage dealer Paladin but I would leave it at 10. You are going to be on the front line and your Fort will be super mediocre and its your second most import save. I hate dumping INT too but I get it. Although if you spec for Sacred Immolation its not going to have a good AOE. and Sacred Immolation turns Paladins from being good Alpha Strikers to being able to put out good dps. Granted it doesn't lessen your DPS technically it just lessens the AOE. Also poisons are going to hurt a lot but its doable you will just have to rest more. I feel that Paladins are durable frontliners that where Plate most of the time. If you are not using Flames of Devotion you are not going to be DPSing so your damage while not using FoD is average. If you are using 2handers even with a 12 DEX you are to slow to be a serious damage dealer. Their is a difference between an Alpha Striker and a damage dealer. Its why I personally leave PER at 10. Fod has a +20 ACC with a Weapon Focus and Zealous Focus its more then enough to reliably land hits and crits for the two actual hits that matter per round. This my opine though as I use my Paladin as a durable frontliner capable of securing kills although his main job is party support and tanking. PS I always play PoTD/ToI so this from my experience on that difficulty.
