Thread pruned a teeny-weeny bit - move along, nothing to see...

Thanks, I've had a look at the website. I think I'll see if I can get used to the VLC interface. If I can't, then Purevideo looks like the best option.
-
Cheers guys. I've downloaded VLC and it seems to be working fine, although it doesn't enable Windows Media Player or Realplayer to see DVDs the way that PowerDVD does. On the other hand, it's able to run pretty much everything and it opens and closes very quickly - much better than Windows Media Player.

Good list. Fate of Atlantis almost made my list, but it's been so long since I played it - must be over ten years or something.

Reinstalling everything from scratch after switching to Windows Vista, I discover that I've lost my CD key for PowerDVD 6. I never much liked PowerDVD anyway, but it always came free with whatever computer I bought so I've always used it, and I understand that unless I have it or something similar installed, Windows Media Player and RealPlayer won't play DVDs either. So is there anything else out there that will do the same job? For free would be nice too, of course.

If you asked me again tomorrow, the order would probably be different, but most of the games would be the same (I hope): 1. Quest for Glory 2: Trial By Fire 2. Gabriel Knight 1: Sins of the Father 3. Baldur's Gate 2: Shadows of Amn 4. Ultima VII: Serpent Isle 5. Civilization IV 6. Gabriel Knight 2: The Beast Within 7. King's Quest VI: Heir Today, Gone Tomorrow 8. Quest for Glory 4: Shadows of Darkness 9. Knights of the Old Republic 2: The Sith Lords 10.Space Quest V: The Next Mutation

Vista seems to be working out fine. NWN2 doesn't run noticeably faster or slower, but a rather annoying bug I got with the latest patch that caused the system to hang appears to have disappeared (touch wood) or at least be much less frequent in Vista.

I started to reinstall Oblivion yesterday, only to discover that the downloads I had bought were incompatible with Windows Vista. So, back on the shelf it goes. Great going, Bethesda!

No real problems so far, though I've still to test it in any heavyweight games. A couple of minor annoyances, but that's to be expected.

Mugabe fights back. He's now started arresting election officials for undercounting his vote. If only Al Gore had thought of that. Again, the MDC is calling for the international community to get more involved, and again, Thabo Mbeki is calling on everyone to do nothing at all.

Did Chinese public opinion really need rallying against the West? I never got the impression that the West was much admired in China, for good and for bad reasons. So far the torch relay has been an exercise in the Chinese government trying to export its values to the West - notably the blue-tracksuited thugs (Seb Coe's choice of words, not mine) and their aggressive behaviour. It's bad enough to see British police behave like this - and they do from time to time - but to see agents of a foreign power doing so (and apparently given license to do so by the British government) stinks. A grotesque charade

It's quite fun for a while, but I suppose you have to play lots of games before it opens the question mark games for play. I did four or five before I got bored. Sorry. Edit: Okay, it's slightly more addictive than I thought. For level thirty-three you have to move the cursor fast across the lines like you're trying to cut them in two.

I'm upgrading to Windows Vista in the next hour(s?). If you never hear from me again, it's because Vista killed my computer. Or me. Or both. :ninja10:

I'm glad you came back. Here's something you could try: right-click somewhere on your desktop and select "nVidia Control Panel". Make sure to have the view options set to "advanced". Open up the "3D settings" for that specific game. Scroll down through your options and find "Extension Limit". Make sure this is turned off. It wasn't specifically for your problem but a few errors we've heard of seem to be related to it. My main suggestion is to try different graphics drivers. It's something I find quite annoying, but the latest drivers aren't necessarily the best. Try installing the previous version, and if that doesn't work, try installing the latest beta drivers instead. Let us know if anything works.

GI exclusive screenshots
SteveThaiBinh replied to funcroc's topic in Alpha Protocol: General Discussion
It does look excellent, doesn't it! The level of detail on the face in the second picture looks great to me (though I don't know how it compares with other recent games). I don't think much of the decor in what I assume is a safe house? Lacks warmth. Maybe a nice rug would do. And what's he doing with his left hand in the museum picture? -
That's a good idea. They should advertise each game somewhere in the other, and boost sales maybe?

I sympathise with the frustrations of getting games to work on the PC sometimes, but you can hardly expect fans of the game (as most of us are) to feel inclined to help after such a post. Please do re-post focusing on your questions, and we'll do our best to help.

I think they said they shared some 'assets' but that the games were going in such different directions there was very little opportunity for working together or crossovers. Edit: I stand corrected. Apparently there's been much more co-operation than that.

I agree - it's potentially really interesting and could make for an excellent gaming experience. It's a minefield, though, for a small game developer - imagine the headlines "New Video Game Teaches Kids To Torture!!". Nonsense of course, but it would happen. The comparison with Mass Effect is interesting, given that many people, and games raters, who throw a fit over sex and nudity turn a blind eye to appalling violence. Where does torture fit into that? If a pan away from an 'execution' gets an M-rating, does a pan away from torture automatically get the same? The game designers would also have to make important choices. As players, we'd get to choose whether we carry out torture or not, but the designers would have to decide whether the torture yielded useful information or not, and both those options are controversial and contested, it seems. The more I think about this, the more I hope they don't sidestep the issue, even if what they implement doesn't end up matching my own beliefs and values on the subject.

Character love stories
SteveThaiBinh replied to Lord Siphon's topic in Star Wars: General Discussion
No way. When I arrived on these boards just after Kotor 2 was released, they were a hotbed of Bao-Dur/Exile romance fever. Personally I really enjoy romances in games, and the thought of a soppy love story motivates me to replay certain games more than others. I must have been through Baldur's Gate 2 half a dozen times purely in order to explore the romances - both Bioware's and the work of various modders. I still haven't completed the Aerie romance - one day I will. -
