Thundercat710 Posted February 3, 2017 Posted February 3, 2017 Hello, Obsidian. Can we talk epic loot for a quick bit? Wouldn't it be cool if, every time a new game is started, the epic loot drops were randomly selected from the pool of (hopefully) tons of (assuredly) badass items you all have created? That way it limits the meta-gaming to a degree. Soulbound weapons, or boss-specific drops, maybe not those things. But all the other sweet sweet loot...could that be done? If not, what are your objections to it? If it's already being done, schweet. Cannot wait for this game. You guys are complete badasses. And speaking of - could we get a few Tim Cain updates during this campaign like we did last time? That guy is gold.
Townsendvol Posted February 13, 2017 Posted February 13, 2017 Just bumping this for you so hopefully you get an answer.
illathid Posted February 13, 2017 Posted February 13, 2017 Josh talked about random drops in the latest twitch chat. "Wizards do not need to be The Dudes Who Can AoE Nuke You and Gish and Take as Many Hits as a Fighter and Make all Skills Irrelevant Because Magic." -Josh Sawyer

I'm sure the limited randomized pool in the first game was something most of us hated. We like to be able to plan our builds around items, and that goes away if epic quality items aren't guaranteed to drop. They will have randomized loot but none of the epic level stuff should be in it. This is something Josh has already said on stream. 2
AndreaColombo Posted February 13, 2017 Posted February 13, 2017 (edited) ^ Yup. Random loot is not a feature; it is a punishment. Thankfully Josh said the really good items won't be randomized in Deadfire. PoE already had some very good pieces that were irritatingly random. Besides, why would you want to impose a limitation on meta gaming? Meta gaming is not evil and shouldn't be prevented. It's a conscious decision you may or may not make, like min/maxing or powergaming. Edited February 13, 2017 by AndreaColombo 2 "Time is not your enemy. Fardragon Posted February 13, 2017 Posted February 13, 2017 I hate random loot. 2 Everyone knows Science Fiction is really cool. You know what PoE really needs? Spaceships! There isn't any game that wouldn't be improved by a space combat minigame. Adding one to PoE would send sales skyrocketing, and ensure the game was remembered for all time!!!!!
MaxQuest Posted February 13, 2017 Posted February 13, 2017 (edited) From the last Q&A Twitch session: Q: Will there be random loot in Deadfire? In Pillars of Eternity it can be very frustrating to be able to get very good pieces of equipment only by random loot. JS: Yes, there will be some random loot, however the more influential pieces of random loot will not be randomized, they will just be placed. If you want Boots of Speed or things like that, those will probably not be put on a randomized list. But we still have some randomization. It makes build impossible if that luck doesn't shine upon you. Also.. if builds have to rely on loot, then this will be Diablo 3... they gotta make respawning battles indefinitely.
hilfazer Posted February 17, 2017 Posted February 17, 2017 It's possible to have randomized loot and have everything guaranteed to drop at the same time. Something like drawing cards from a deck. Of course there can be more decks to avoid endgame items on lvl 1. Vancian =/= per rest.
Leeuwenhart Posted February 17, 2017 Posted February 17, 2017 Tidefall on first rat kill lvl 1. You mad Bro? Hahaha
Thundercat710 Posted February 17, 2017 Author Posted February 17, 2017 (edited) I would appreciate it if they somehow got this request to be toggle-able in the menu. I have done 4 playthroughs of Pillars 1 and my lazy min-max self beelines to where I know the sweet loot is, and I dictate my party builds around the loot I know I'm going to pick up ahead of time. It's not evil, as someone above mentioned, not at all. It lessens my enjoyment of the game drastically when I meta it, and it is quite difficult for me to force myself not to. I notice my save-scumming goes up astronomically when I play the game this way, as well. Again, that's not a bad thing, and I do get some enjoyment out of the game like that, but nowhere at all to the degree when I must adapt to what the game does (or doesn't) give me. I can definitely see the side of the random-loot haters, for sure. I just wish it was something that could be toggled. Edited February 18, 2017 by Thundercat710 1
Leeuwenhart Posted February 17, 2017 Posted February 17, 2017 Give a man freedom he says he doesnt know where to go. Give a man direction he says he doesnt want to go "there".
