Old thread here.

finally saw lucy.

...

wow.

...

is ironic that while watching a movie about a woman who is able to increasing access her brain's potential, we felt as if we were losing iq points the longer we watched the film.  most mind-numbing stoopid flick we has seen since the ice pirates, and not near as amusing.

HA! Good Fun!

ps the danish joe buck wannabee getting splaterized in the first few minutes o' the film were the high point o' the film for us.

Joe Buck wannabee getting splatterized? I might need to see this... :p

(...although, to be honest, most other sportscasters bother me more than Joe Buck...and I say that as a Packers fan, and he and Aikman sportscast the majority of their games)

I watched Wildcard, a Jason Statham flick about a degenerate gambler who also is good at beating people up.  I was in the mood for something with Vegas in it, since I'm going in a few weeks, and this was a decent trip through a few casinos.  It had some pretty good parts, really pretty standard Statham stuff.  But it had  a lot of slooooow parts, so I wouldn't recommend it or anything.

Watched all the Jurassic Films over the weekend.  Was fun. JP was the only film I watched 3 times at the theater.  I probably liked the 2nd film better this time around than any other time I've watched it, although I still find it falls flat in San Diego.  JPIII is a tight film; not terribly ambitious but it does what it sets out to do.

A few lingering questions

Jurassic Park - How did the T-Rex get into the Visitor's Center? It was last in the savannah grasslands when the power was turned on.  Nedry left the doors open, but why would the T-Rex run all around the park just to keep chasing Grant and the kids?

Jurassic Park: The Lost World - Okay so what killed the people on the boat?  The baby T-Rex wasn't there, the T-Rex was locked in the hold, so what killed the crew and where was it after the crash?

Jurassic Park III - again with the boat deaths, what killed the two guys in the speedboat to set all of this off?  The aviary wasn't opened until much, much later.  A sea dinosaur?  But Jurassic World is the first known appearance of InGen doing a mosasaur...?

Anyhow, the main event was Jurassic World.  It hooked me like the original film did; it may not be quite as strong, but it does a good job building the new world and setting it on its spin.  By the time the end rolled around I knew where it was going (whether it made sense or not) and it was exciting to see.  Lots of dangling plot elements to be picked up in an inevitable sequel.

Haha, a lot of those questions plague the fan community.

Interestingly, the first one is somewhat answered by the second film - the T-Rex can smell from miles away and it must have noticed something it didn't like about Grant and the kids. Possibly it ate the lawyer and decided kids were tasty. And some theatrical cuts had the animal actually bursting through the wall of the visitors center, you can see the hole behind him, don't know why this got cut out of true film.

About the boats, in the second film the going fan theory is that there must have been a raptor on board, but really it's all because that entire sequence was added on when filming was almost done. The third film is easier to explain - we see the Spinosaurus swimming later on in the film, and since that's the designated antagonist...

Posted

Regarding T-Rex in the first film - there's a fan explanation that the T-Rex had a cold as to why Grant's "just stand still" strategy worked given the T-Rex's sense of smell..  I mean I guess it could have gotten better overnight, but...

My theatrical cut never had wall bursting.  So sad.  At least I did get to see the weird 13th Warrior edit that's not the film out on DVD...I'll always have that bit of film trivia.

I'm not surprised that the boat sequence was added - it felt added on in the second film.  I guess I can kinda buy the Spinosaurus theory, since they were clearly at an outlet for a river...and I guess it didn't like the saltier seawater and went back to freshwater after grabbing a snack.

The Lost World novel actually has Grant explain it. He was wrong about it entirely, the T-Rex had just eaten and was no longer hungry.

Which is why Jurassic Park III annoys me so much when Grant tries that trick again. YOU FIGURED THIS OUT IN THE NOVELS, YOU FOOL

I quickly looked it up earlier and Grant actually comes up with it back in the original novel. Malcolm confirms it doesn't work in The Lost World, citing that the theoretical reason was nonsense in the first place. The idea was that the T-Rex brain is similar in shape to certain amphibians that can only see movement. To be fair, it is a ridiculous thought.

As for them keeping it in the movie, well, it simply allows for more fun storytelling. Those scenes in the first film where they have to stop moving and be completely still while it looks at them are tense. Lord knows it's not the only scientific inaccuracy. Raptors were slightly bigger than chickens!

I watched The Changeling again....if you haven't seen it I strongly suggest you watch it. Its based on a true story and stars Angelina Jolie and its all about how her son goes missing in the 1920's...there are many things I loved about it but it highlights just how intense and  rampant sexism was and how women use to be dismissed...but don't think its about SJ issues. Its not :)

Velociraptors were small but the other branch of the family tree was bigger - with Utahraptor or Dromaeosaurus being more right for what the movie shows.

Albeit still without feathers... :p

Dromaeosaurus and Deinonychus are both still far too small to be the raptors depicted in the film and Utahraptor is far too big. Austroraptor, a relatively new species (2008) comes closest but like Utahraptor, is still too big but that's the closest a known species comes. Fandom usually resolves it by saying this is a different species, either one of which fossils haven't been found or affected by the gene-splicing.

But raptors are hardly the only dinosaur they get wrong. That tiny venom-spitting one with the frill? Yeah.

dilophosaurus-size.jpg

And don't even get the dino nerds (like me) started on the Pteranodons (name meaning: winged and toothless) in Jurassic Park 3 having teeth. These movies run on rule of cool.

Posted

I guess instead of "more right" I should have said "closer to what was in the film".  And dilophasaurus' frills were also an add on, IIRC.  Isn't it fan theory it was a juvenile?  I'd really like to see them return, to be honest. Was surprised to see the Pachycephalosaurus make a return, to be honest.

Mind you Jurassic World "fixes" the problem in a way...

positing the idea that they could take the bigger than T-Rex Indominus into a "JP Velociraptor" size critter for military purposes.  Along with the idea that the other dna splices created new animals, they've handwaved the problems away, in most respects

Most of what Wu said about it was paraphrased from Wu in the first book, so it wasn't that much of an issue anyway. :)

And Dilophosaurus kinda came back - a brief shot of it in holographic form.

Posted

Yeah hologram - I mean "for reals".

And I knew it was in the book, but I don't remember it being explicitly mentioned in the films (mind you I read JP when it came out; I've never read TLW, so that's going to be interesting - re-reading JP first though).

I'm re-reading The Lost World right now because I don't remember much about it. It has very few things in common with the movie. But in Jurassic Park (the novel) Wu has a conversation with Hammond about making the animals "better" - more docile while more scary looking, more in tune with how people would expect dinosaurs to be. It's why I was never upset with the hybrid idea - it was literally where it seemed the story would go from the first book (The Lost World ignores this, however).

My memory is really fuzzy. I remember the Carnotosaurus and its camouflage, but I keep thinking that's the Spinosaurus from the third movie.

Yeah I haven't got to the part where Wu shows up in JP so haven't reread that speech yet.

Carnotaurus, yeah. If I recall, even the raptors and rexes avoid their living area. Spinosaurus isn't in the books at all. I remember them in there and in fact I liked when they took inspiration from them for a certain bit of Jurassic World.

I really liked The Gambler with Marky Mark, of the more recent ones. my fav is Owning Mahowny.

in another news:

this is currently one of the directors whose work I'm excited about the most (really liked Enemy and loved Prisoners), and Emily Blunt is just awesome, looking forward to this movie

The Babadook.

A lovely bit of psychological horror. Oculus was my favourite horror movie of 2014, but since this originally came out in 2014 too I guess this supplants it. The director was a genius at making me feel unsettled simply by the way his shots were framed, how long they were, how the sound was mixed. The ending was... weird but an odd final 5 minutes doesn't take away that I was freaked out enough to be violently shivering at some points.

For the spate of sequilitis news and rumours..

139 Movie Sequels currently in the works..

And for a selection of:

Kingsman: The Secret Service 2

20th Century Fox wants a sequel to Kingsman, and now, Matthew Vaughn has confirmed he's writing one. It's unlikely to be his next film, but if Vaughn can get the screenplay to a place he's happy with, then he'll press ahead with a sequel. Taron Egerton is believed to be contracted for a second movie, as is Sophie Cookson. Watch this space (and it'll Vaughn's first full-on sequel if he gets it going...)

The Legend Of Conan

Arnold Schwarzenegger is looking to pick up the adventures of Conan, in a film that will pick up his story of the character three decades after Arnie last portrayed him. Ignoring altogether the Jason Momoa-headlined reboot, The Legend Of Conan is being written by Andrew Berloff, whith Chris Morgan and Fredrik Malmberg producting. Apparently, in spite of Arnie's waning box office powers, the project remains active. Much will depend on how Terminator: Genisys fares though, we suspect, not least with Maggie going straight to video on demand in the US.

John Wick 2

The excellent John Wick may not have made hundreds of trillions of dollars, but it made enough to get chapter two off the ground. John Wick 2 sees Reeves return, along with writer Derek Kolstad, and directors David Leitch and Chad Stahelski. No dates have been announced, but the film is definitely happening.

Jack Reacher 2

There's been progress on this one. Entitled Jack Reacher: Never Go back, the new film will see Tom Cruise reprise the title role from Lee Childs' books. This time though, Christopher McQuarrie isn't directing, with the job going to The Last Samurai helmer Edward Zwick. As we reported here, Zwick is reworking the screenplay, alongside Marshall Herskovitz and Richard Wenk. No release date yet.

Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters 2

A surprise success at the box office, the Jeremy Renner-Gemma Arterton headlined Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters is still expected to receive a follow-up. Writer-director Tommy Wikola has a script in place for the movie, although he's likely to pass the director's chair onto someone else. Jeremy Renner's availability is seemingly a delaying factor at the moment. The film was originally set for release in 2016, but that looks like a deadline missed to us.

Goonies 2

Out of the blue, director Richard Donner revealed a year or so back that he's working on a sequel to The Goonies. Since then, original writer Chris Columbus has revealed that it's slow going. "We're still searching, but we are searching very hard to try and make it work. But we're not going to let anybody down. If we don't feel it's right, and that's between Donner, Spielberg and myself, if we don't feel it's right, we're not gonna do it", he told Collider. He did confirm that all want to make the film, though.

Machete Kills Again… In Space

The poor box office returns for Machete Kills were offset by the fact that the film was so cheap to make. Nonetheless, it was still teetering on a loss. However, the planned finale to the trilogy, Machete Kills Again... In Space is apparently still active.

Danny Trejo will obviously be back to star, and he confirmed earlier in 2015 that he and director Robert Rodriguez were set work on the movie later this year. We'd heard little since, though.

Mechanic: Resurrection

The Statham is back for The Mechanic 2, this time starring alongside Jessica Alba, Tommy Lee Jones and Michelle Yeoh. Simon West has stepped back from directing though, and thus Dennis Gansel (The Follower, The Fourth State) has taken over.

The film will be released on January 22nd 2016, nearly five years after the original movie.

Now You See Me: The Second Act

A surprise hit back in 2013, Lionsgate is keen to capitalise on the success of Louis Leterrier's magic caper Now You See Me, and a sequel is on the way. Jesse Eisenberg, Woody Harrelson and Dave Franco lead the returning cast (Isla Fisher's pregnancy ruled her out of this one), with Daniel Radcliffe the most notable new addition to the call sheet. Jon M Chu has taken over directing duties from Louis Leterrir. The new film is due in June 2016

Now You See Me 3

Call Lionsgate confident, but it's already also got the wheels in motion on a third Now You See Me picture. Early stages, of course, but Lionsgate boss Jon Feltheimer has already confirmed to investors and analysts that "we're already begun early planning for Now You See Me 3". If all goes to plan, a 2018 release date would be a decent bet.

The Raid 3

Writer/director/editor/lord of movie violence Gareth Evans is planning a third film in The Raid series of movies, although he's taking a couple of years away before he tackles it. The Raid 3 will splinter off from The Raid 2. As such, it will begin three hours before the story of The Raid 2 finishes, and go in a different direction. By the sounds of it, we may have to wait until 2017/2018 to see it.

Riddick 4

The ever-busy Vin Diesel still has Riddick 4 to slot into his schedule somewhere. The success of Riddick 3 (aka Riddick) left both Diesel and Universal keen to make another. But then Universal presumably wants him to make far more lucrative Fast & Furious sequels as a greater priority, especially right now. That's probably why Riddick has taken a back seat...

Spaceballs 2

The longest of long shots this, but Mel Brooks, chatting on Adam Carolla's podcast earlier in the year, teased a possible Spaceballs sequel. Under the working title Spaceballs 2: The Search For More Money, Brooks would want the film to land in the midst of the Star Wars hoopla that'll kick off with this year's The Force Awakens. He'd need to get Rick Moranis out of retirement to make the film though, and our guess is that that is where things will ultimately stumble. Still, fingers crossed for more Darth Helmet...

Tremors 5

Heading to a DVD rack/digital HD supplier later this year is the latest sequel to Tremors. Entitled Tremors 5: Bloodlines, the film is being directed by Don Michael Paul (who previously made the likes of Jarhead 2 and Lake Placid: The Final Chapter). Michael Gross and Jamie Kennedy star, and the movie is due in October.

Tucker & Dale Vs Evil 2

We can't recommend hunting down a copy of Tucker & Dale Vs Evil enough, a terrific horror comedy that all but bypassed cinemas. Fortunately, it's getting a second life on DVD, so much so that Tucker & Dale Vs Evil 2 is edging closer. Alan Tudyk and Tyler Labine confirmed the news last year, although there's been little sign yet of it going into production. While you're waiting, do check out the brilliant original though...

After watching Kingsman last night, I'm down for a sequel. Like 2/3rds of the way through it I was like "This is like an old James Bond movie, but with modern filmmaking... its awesome" Istart watching the special features and Matthew Vaughn and Mark Millar are talking about how they came up with it by sitting in a bar talking about how Spy movies are too serious and they wanted to make a fun spy movie like the old James Bond movies but modern.

Also down for a Hansel and Gretel 2. First one was so absurd, it was glorious. I'm really not all that interested in an Old Man Conan movie, but if it gets off the ground, they should cast Momoa as Conan's son. Even people who didn't like his Conan movie praised him as Conan, and he should be rewarded for it. (though I don't get the hate for his Conan movie. Its pretty much exactly what I expected out of a Conan movie.)
