AwesomeOcelot Posted August 28, 2014 Posted August 28, 2014 Any MMO I've played tends to have more female players than other types of games. In 2005/2006 when I was playing WoW at least a quarter of my guilds were female.

TMZuk Posted August 28, 2014 Posted August 28, 2014 (edited) There's a lot of generalizations as to what kind of games women play and what they like. Just as there's a lot of generalizations as to why they play. Exactly the same as the generalization that has been around for decades, that a gamer is a nerd, with no life and no friends. Generalizations can be useful at times, but mostly they give a very distorted image of the reality. I know five women who spend time playing computer games. With time I mean more than once or twice a month. Interestingly enough, they all prefer to play on the PC, but maybe that's because it is still a major gaming platform in Denmark. The exception is Guitar Hero, but that's mostly something we all play at drunk parties. Two of them are hardcore RPG fans. Of the three others, one of them occasionally plays RPGs but mostly simulators and strategy. One play simulations exclusively and the last one play browser games. Age wise they are between 25 and 45. Five people is not enough to determine anything from, but still, I'd say women are as diverse as men in what and how they play. Edited August 28, 2014 by TMZuk 2
melkathi Posted September 14, 2014 Posted September 14, 2014 Ugh, saw this advertisement gif today. Seems they still target the teen male audience. Unobtrusively informing you about my new ebook (which you should feel free to read and shower with praise).
Agiel Posted September 14, 2014 Posted September 14, 2014 (edited) Any MMO I've played tends to have more female players than other types of games. In 2005/2006 when I was playing WoW at least a quarter of my guilds were female. In my time playing MMOs of late, I'd say that ratio has grown to 1/3rd of a given guild, though admittedly global chats give the impression that it's not the case. Edited September 14, 2014 by Agiel Quote “Political philosophers have often pointed out that in wartime, the citizen, the male citizen at least, loses one of his most basic rights, his right to life; and this has been true ever since the French Revolution and the invention of conscription, now an almost universally accepted principle. But these same philosophers have rarely noted that the citizen in question simultaneously loses another right, one just as basic and perhaps even more vital for his conception of himself as a civilized human being: the right not to kill.” -Jonathan Littell <<Les Bienveillantes>> Quote "The chancellor, the late chancellor, was only partly correct. He was obsolete. But so is the State, the entity he worshipped. Any state, entity, or ideology becomes obsolete when it stockpiles the wrong weapons: when it captures territories, but not minds; when it enslaves millions, but convinces nobody. When it is naked, yet puts on armor and calls it faith, while in the Eyes of God it has no faith at all. Any state, any entity, any ideology that fails to recognize the worth, the dignity, the rights of Man...that state is obsolete." -Rod Serling
PrimeHydra Posted September 16, 2014 Posted September 16, 2014 Wait, this isn't an Onion article? No, this if for real! Awesome. Now if they would just stop drawing females in RPGs and Magic: The Gathering to look like porn stars, we might get some more "hardcore" lady gamers. Pillars of Eternity is so far pretty tasteful in this regard. 2 Ask a fish head Anything you want to They won't answer (They can't talk)

Malcador Posted September 16, 2014 Posted September 16, 2014 Certainly nowhere I have to feel ashamed or otherwise prevented from mentioning I played Dragon Age or The Witcher or Fallout (they beat me if I mention I played Daikatana), other than the baseline risk of mentioning any hobby. Do the women curl their lips in disgust, point their fingers and cry out "misogynist!!" at you if you do or something ? Why has elegance found so little following? Vast majority of women are not evil feminists who hate men or their toys. Not to mention plenty of women have no problem with games - espicially in 2014. That kind of hateful extrem feminism largely only exists on the interent or in small corners of the public world. But, in real life with real people, women aren't such psychopaths. Just liek the vast majoritym of men don't hate women and aren't against women playing gAmes or reading Harlequin romance novels. Most women are equalists who want true equality for both genders they are not feminists who want to be superior. 1 DWARVES IN PROJECT ETERNITY = VOLOURN HAS PLEDGED $250.

You kids and your boy's club...Point: missed! Not at all. If anything you're ignoring the possibility that games could be fun, and the characters attractive, without every elven priestess look like something out of Playboy. It's not about making games non-geeky. Geeky is good. It's about not scaring women away by pandering exclusively to a male market. The OP's article is evidence that maybe, just maybe, things can start changing in this smelly tree house we call CRPG fandom. But go ahead and mock me. I never said anything about making females superior, so I'm not sure where this "femi-nazi" vibe is coming from. All I said was that it's extremely obvious, looking at the art of most CRPGs, that they're pandering to an exclusively male aesthetic. It's time that changed.
