It's a way of data gathering that people seem to accept more than actual data-gathering (for obvious reason).

And I guess people prefer getting 'achievements' rather than 'game progress badges'

Yeah, but, even if you "disable them" (quotes because I dunno if you really can... *shrug*) and "don't accept" them, the system's still gonna log that data whenever you connect to the net, anyway, right? So, I don't know that people's likely acceptance of something like simple game progress tracking that isn't pretending to be "achievements" is really an issue.

Now, if there's actually a way to prevent them from tracking that statistical data, even with the current disguised-as-achievements way of doing things, then I suppose I stand corrected.

I'm just curious about that. Because functionally, it seems unnecessary. Personally, I'd have no problem, whatsoever, with Steam telling me "your progress through games will be logged to collect anonymous game-completion statistical data." I wouldn't be like "OH NO YOU DON'T, STEAM! I don't want someone knowing that some nameless person played half their game every time I play half of a game! Next you'll ask for underpants samples!" :). But, that's just me.

Should we not start with some Ipelagos, or at least some Greater Ipelagos, before tackling a named Arch Ipelago? 6_u

Just turn off the steam overlay.
You actually are required to turn it off if you want VtM:B to function with Steam.

Pretty sure they've said that achievements will only be in the Steam version of the game. In other words, there'll only be Steam achievements, and not in-game pop-ups from in physical copies of the game, or from GOG.com or whatever.

Steam Version is the Superior Edition.

There have been two other threads on this already. They had polls, and a clear majority of folks don't want them in PoE.

While I do think they work in some games, I don't think they have a place in an infinity engine inspired game focused on story.

Your statement should be: a clear majority of the minority of contributors who visit the boards and bothered to vote in an unscientific poll. In other words, a tiny minority with strong views.

Do you have a link to these polls? I don't recall seeing them.

"It has just been discovered that research causes cancer in rats."

Oh yeah, achievments. Who cares? Never payed any attention to them anyways :p

Achievment unlocked! - rant about achievments on Obsidian forums, 10 pts.

It would be of small avail to talk of magic in the air...

Once people figure out how to monetize acheevs (and they are already starting to), then people's tunes are going to change right-quick.
