Woldan Posted October 19, 2013 Author Posted October 19, 2013 Recoil (sorry but conservation of momentum mandates this one - you might not notice the recoil with a weapon fixed to a test bench but it's there) You're correct. I guess I'm too tired to think straight. If nearly 70% of energy is lost regular powder is almost as inefficient as gasoline. Wow. I gazed at the dead, and for one dark moment I saw a banquet.

Woldan Posted October 19, 2013 Author Posted October 19, 2013 Yep, I shoot muzzleloaders and I totally know what you mean, one shot and the barrel looks like a dirty chimney. Thank gods modern powder is much cleaner, modern powder combustion rate is around 98-99.5%. But it also has to do a lot with pressure, if you raise the pressure even blackpowder burns a lot cleaner. This can be seen in blackpowder cartridges which create more pressure than BP muzzleloaders. 2 I gazed at the dead, and for one dark moment I saw a banquet.

Then again, it is common knowledge that the majority of the power behind muzzleloaders comes from the fact that the bullet is simply that scared of someone with the balls to stand infront of a firing squad and is simply running away from him. I remember listening to a distant gun battle when I was a kid and thinking it sounded exactly like that, actually! Gun battle?! O.O Edited October 19, 2013 by Azdeus Civilization, in fact, grows more and more maudlin and hysterical; especially under democracy it tends to degenerate into a mere combat of crazes; the whole aim of practical politics is to keep the populace alarmed (and hence clamorous to be led to safety) by menacing it with an endless series of hobgoblins, most of them imaginary. - H.L. Woldan Posted October 19, 2013 Author Posted October 19, 2013 Gun battle?! Woldan Posted November 3, 2013 Author Posted November 3, 2013 Check this out, Remington is coming up with a new smart-scope for the masses, called the 2020. http://www.guns.com/2013/09/25/remington-2020-smart-scopes-masses/ With range finder, wind-reader and auto- elevation adjustment. The first thing that popped into my mind is that they put a GPS tracker into that thing. My opinion is that its huge, ugly and for those who are too lazy to learn proper shooting skills like learning the holdovers for your loads, reading wind and guessing ranges. It IS a scope for the masses, the dumb masses. 2 I gazed at the dead, and for one dark moment I saw a banquet.

TrashMan Posted November 6, 2013 Posted November 6, 2013 There is no energy loss, that data is from a fixed test barrel. So its true, my breakfast has more energy than a couple of tank shells. JFSOCC Posted November 6, 2013 Posted November 6, 2013 (edited) or a nuclear bomb exploding with the energy of about a cubic meter of lead. Edit: actually nuclear bombs use much less energy. Woldan Posted November 9, 2013 Author Posted November 9, 2013 (edited) Shot this with my hunting rifle today, with commercial ammo! 7 shots at 100 meters. The hit at 6 o' clock was the cold bore shot. (Shot high because the rifle is sighted in for 150) With this accuracy I could hit a fly shot after shot at 100. You recall we had that discussion abou the actually energy inside a rifle cartridge? I was walking along yesterday thinking that terrorist bombs would sound a lot less scary on the news if we said that they exploded with "the energy of 2 sandwiches". Technically speaking, in terms of efficiency, it's not even close to the energy contained within two sandwiches. Now if you had two antimatter sandwiches, and let them contact "matter," the energy release would be 100%, so even if the Earth survived it would be uninhabitable, not that any humans would be left to enjoy the planetary debris. After all, an H-bomb releases less than 1% of the energy potential of the hydrogen fusion reaction. It's important to be afraid, after all. Edited November 9, 2013 by AGX-17
