What you did today

Rosbjerg

Recommended Posts

Today I bought a load of fancy looking clay pots and some baby plants for the "garden", my yard has been a concrete graveyard for years so I thought it's time to spruce it up.  I've also been doing more of the fitness thing, 300 rows on the rowing machine plus a load of legs lifts and stretches, this is now part of my daily routine  :x

What I did today:

Somehow managed to trash a tooth, it broke in half and blood was fountaining out of it like crazy, guess I need a trip to the dentists. I just hope I don't need it pulled...

My life sometimes feels like a never ending visit to the dentists (way too much pop as a teen) but luckily I've never broken a tooth, the thought makes me queasy

Same here, I used to drink lots of cola and even though I stopped drinking soft drinks yeas ago..well, the damage has been done.

I've never broken a tooth, the thought makes me queasy

Its my massive jaw, I have the jaw of a shark that is putting lots of stress on my teeth, but sadly I lack the sharks ability to replace broken teeth with new ones.

I gazed at the dead, and for one dark moment I saw a banquet.

I'm now pondering something that's a lot bigger than me.

Namely, that the Internet caused the downslide of TV  and Video in terms of content.

Mostly based off an interview from... top gear(?) or Daily Show where a musician/producer said that he hates the advance of technology in his industry. Before the internet era, Somebody had to know somebody had to know somebody to be able to produce a mix tape. And each link in that chain had to think that the music in question was good. It inherently created a filter on creative medium, meaning that only those creations that were actually good (or considered good by a larger portion) would be released to the wider world (or even properly considered for that).

Now with content so easily produced by any yahoo with a computer, it's much cheaper and simpler to just attach a film crew to a group of yahoos with no sense. Before the shows actually had to have a premise about what they were. About how they were going to grow over time. But the mobility and ease of creation for any sort of content means that the actual content of whatever is being shown doesn't need to be as high quality.

... Is there a term for this? And if not, Tigs, I demand you name this the Swanick Effect you bloody phd in linguistics.

I managed to hurt my back after helping a friend move. I've spent the last 3 hours with a cold pack resting against my back.

Soda is my biggest weakness and I envy those who do not crave its delicious flavor

I'm also looking at some more dental work in the near future thanks to the above mentioned soda and bad overbite

Co-signed.

Been really sluggish the whole week, happily birch pollen levels are going down and I can soon get off the meds.

Also, there's a version of the 419 scam that's attempting to target lawyers. Good English in the mails etc. Mildly interesting.

You're a cheery wee bugger, Nep. Have I ever said that?

There are times when friends can just be so..helpful.

A gathering of friends where no-one actually understands your work, so to a certain extent they rip it to shreds. All due to being concerned about you. Due to that mix of not understanding it, or considering it basic common sense anyone can do that consultants just make up buzz words for to justify their fees, or pretty much considering it in that pseudo-science area, or for a dozen other reasons.  All elements pushing that "imposter syndrome" feeling right up with the "i have no clue what I'm actually doing and making it up as I go along" sense...

Combined with the gathering where you happen to be the sole single person in a group of them who turn up with wives, husbands, significant others with new kids and/or fresh pregnancies... Which of course reaches the point where they start making couples plans together and you're kind of stuck on that outskirts wondering where the hell everything is going...

Yes, I'm really feeling all the confidence and capability of the world on this morning where the rain is pissing it down and the skies are incredibly grey..  :shifty:

...And now I have a bottled example of a cri de coeur

I had some good advice a long time ago that it is pointless being in th business of comparing oneself to others. There are always people better off or worse off.

I would add that it's even more pointless to worry about other people's opinions of your life. They don't share your objectives, they don't understand your difficulties, and they don't _want_ to believe you can overcome the latter to achieve the former - it would only upset them.

EDIT: This doesn't include people working actively alongside you. But they're obviously joined to you by the same objectives.

LOL. I just realised I've been concentrating so hard I just realised I haven't eaten anything since tea yesterday. Hmmm. I think a quick stir fry with plenty of chilli.

I just finished a project so I'm kicking back for the rest of today and indulging my head cold.

Thanks to Bruce I'm also maudlin so I've made myself a pint mug of black coffee and aquavit, while I wait for my curry to cook.

Bought an (expensive) guest bed from a Finnish company who has royally ****ed up everything and the guy I'm talking to is being a colossal pain in the ass of the arrogant kind. Happily years of internet has coached me how to deal with people of limited intelligence with delusions of grandeur. Still messed up my weekend guest plans. ****.

Edit: It's funny how I recycle similar expressions within posts in English when I don't watch out. While I actually think in English instead of translating, it's an interesting insight into how writing in a foreign language limits your thought processes. (evidence removed from above)

I wouldn't call it a problem with writing in a foreign language. I constantly find myself reusing phrases in follow-on sentences. Which is an incredibly bad writing habit I have to force myself to double check whenever I write something longer then a paragraph...

I've been thinking about learning another language, I was pretty good at German in school so I'm thinking I'll start there but one day I'd love to learn an Asian language, Chinese would probably be the smart option if I'm thinking career choices but Japanese would be so cool for watching Anime  :dancing:

No, it's not a problem related exclusively to writing in a foreign language, but it gets a lot worse for me in English and comes  up in shorter passages. I mean, I've either fully or mostly written for a living for the past ~12 years, and avoiding repetition is a part of my normal writing... I just become blind to it when I switch languages.

No work tomorrow. Three day weekend, hell yeah!

Was out with the kids for 3 hours in the pouring rain. I've never heard so much complaining in my entire life. Damn, the kids of today are spoiled. Their parents are also stupid enough to not dress them up properly for a field trip.

Watched Akira at work for no real reason. Pretty boring day overall.

I learned a little Japanese when I was stationed in Okinawa. I found it really hard to comprehend since there really was no common ground with the latin based languages. But most folks were so happy you were making an effort to learn they would help you. The folks in Okinawa were really nice. Not so much in the home islands.

Did you also learn about "Wax On" and "Wax off" as part of your chores  by an elderly and avuncular Japanese gentlemen while you were stationed in Okinawa?

Did you find that suddenly your ability to defend yourself through Karate was better?

The good part about replacing someone incompetent is that people will generally be pathetically happy even if you personally think you're not doing the best you could theoretically do. The bad thing is that you have to un**** a lot of things they've done.

Well the sun has come out today..  My mother's birthday, so there's that to deal with. Sitting down to push on with some work this morning and it's been one of those:  5 minutes of work, doorbell goes. Back to work, 5 minutes later, the phone goes. Back to work. 5 minutes later, something sets the dogs off. Back to work. 5 minutes later, the doorbell goes again..

Still, I was talking to my sister the other day and had that whole conversation in regards to mom's birthday:

Me: "So, any idea what you're getting for mom this year?"

My Sister: "Not a clue."

Me: "I thought I'd keep it simple and get her the blu-rays of Les Mis and The Hobbit, you know what a fan she is."

My Sister:  - narrowing of eyes - "Oh, you bastard."

Families. It's always important to keep the love flowing... :shifty:
