I heard on the news that Obama was better this time, but not as overpowering as Romney was in the previous debate. Also, this Libya issue seems to confuse a lot of people since i also heard that they (the moderator, Obama and Romney) were all wrong to a certain degree. What's the deal here really?

Opinions from fellow americans perhaps?

Obama was much better this time and the polls indicate that he was ahead of Romney in this debate. So I am happy as these types of events obviously do matter to the voting public in the USA

It should be pointed out that Romney created a meme last night in trying to dodge an equal pay question by giving an anecdote about "binders full of women!"

My roommate was not pleased as he basically ignored the 72% pay difference between men and women, while Obama turned around and iterated his first bill signed into law was an equal pay act

Is there still a pay difference that high nowadays in the USA?

Okay thanks, but 28% is still a huge difference for the same job. Is this something that is known about and accepted or is this behavior that is actually illegal?

It isn't something that is easy to enforce legally. You aren't just dealing with one company that pays men more than women. It gets even messier when dealing with bonuses and such, so a base salary may be equal, but many executives pull in more on bonuses than anything else.

Okay, I see the difficulty in actually enforcing it. Its not as clear as just a salary but the difference can be in the structures in the overall remuneration a person receives .

I got binders full of women!

He also made an indirect remark on how are employers have to make flexible hours for women because they have to take care of their kids and cook dinner. Because you know, only women cook dinner and take care of kids.

That just illustrates the facade of American politics as a whole, from the candidates to the voters. After all is said and done, even though Obama/Romney are different philosophically, their administrations wouldn't be much different from one another, and thus candidates/voters end up nitpicking on words said here or there and try to make it a win for one guy, when the other isn't all that different. This is more or less a one party system with people choosing the candidate with the personality that appeals to them. It's simply outrageous that the development of another party has virtually everything going against them to get themselves any real foothold in the race - they aren't even allowed to enter the debates because of the ruling that you need 15% of polling numbers, which is 100% influenced by the media in the first place.

I do think it's pathetic to nitpick over verbal slip ups.

Think of this whole shamozzle as a job interview. If you were hiring for your business are you going to choose based on just the Q&A?

Come to that it would be funny if there was a contractual probation period where it was possible to snapcall an election if the Pres turned out to be lazy and didn't turn up at the White House on time.

The way Romney has been tiptoeing around the issue, it feels like he's trying to say to his base that things will remain the way they are, while not loosing the women because he's not going to try to advocate for them.

Obama has made the equal pay act (which makes it so that somebody can sue their employer if they're getting paid less for the same job no matter when they learn of it) one of his major things in the campaign, and Romney has tried to not even talk about it.

Yet women in Obama's own circles were saying the white house is an unequal place for women - hazardous and with less salary compared to men. Obama must be a woman hater as well - he was painted as one by the women who are currently advising him now. It's a disgrace for anyone to make that an issue between the two candidates. Get over the trivial bull****.. anyone who falls for that stuff is so gullible it's a parody at this point. It's like people who are scared of Obama because he's a "socialist" --- ooooh scarrrry...(even tho Bush Jr and Romney both are "socialists" too when applied to the same standard).

I'm fairly sure every woman will now smack you. Them getting paid equally, and having access to birth control that's covered by medical insurance, is generally considered a big thing.

Yet we need to ask "are they slip ups " or are they really what a candidate thinks but knows how socially unacceptable his views would be? I believe the latter. I remember watching Romney describe how concerned he was that he couldn't find "qualified women for some campaign or university and how hard he looked so that not just men were represented" .It just seemed false and something he knew he had to say. Its like the "47%" gaff, I believe he believes that. You could even argue that from an economic perspective he is right, but a President is more than just numbers and hard facts. I truly believe that Obama does represent the middle class and the indigent people of the USA better than Romney. I also believe he has more empathy for them them Romney

Most women are cold and self serving. Why should I care about an issue(abortion), which for the most part is a result of their irresponsibility? I can't even understand why a man would make this his number one priority unless he's grasping at straws and has little else to vote on.

Again, members of Obama's own circle accused the White House of being a hazardous environment for women - these are the same people who claim Romney is anti-female. Just sounds like a lot more of the self serving attitude these women have. And more legal garbage is not what America needs. America is being run in the dirt by the legal system, it's absurd.

Blodhemn I am finding your generalizations, ignorance and borderline misogyny offense.

Do you not accept that on many levels in society and in many cultures women are discriminated against. Do you not feel that this type of bigotry is something we should rally against and publicly condemn. In the fight against abuse of women how does a comment like " why should we care about abortion, its probably there own fault " help?

This "discrimination" is based off in large part by general studies that no one can truly verify. And in that sense, you can create any group and find discrimination if you want to. Open your eyes and stop blindly following people who you idolize for a minute. If Obama truly cared about "equal pay" - the women around him would get it, would they not? All he has provided is legal bull**** to go with the already bloated legal system.

Blodhemn you need to credit with me more insight and intelligence.

I am a South African, who lives in South Africa but I work for a global American company. I travel overseas to work in African, the Middle East and Europe fairly regularly. Trust me when I say that discrimination against women is both alive and well in many African and Middle East countries. This is not something I have embellished, and I can verify its real as I have seen it. Now there are some cultural reasons why we see this in certain countries, it doesn't make it right but it does explain why changes to women rights can take time in some places. But we should unequivocally condemn any form of bigotry against women in Western countries, there is no justification or reason for it.

Any bigotry needs to be condemned but this discussion is about the abuse of women so I am focusing on that.

AFAIK that statistic hasn't been normalised for "same job", at least the one I see most commonly tossed around doesn't have that taken into account.

Kind of reminds me of a statistic we had here. How only the children of the wealthiest men get into the university. They compared the father's income of law and medical students to the national average, noting how a large portion of them where in the highest earning brackets. Ignoring the fact that employed people in their 50s tend to be the highest earners, on average. :p
