So Why No Warhammer RPG?

I'm not sure 'story' and 'warhammer' go well together, but I'm no expert.

I'd rather see a CRPG made on Elric of Melnibone...

Didn't they already do that. Called it 'the Witcher' or somesuch. :(

What it has to offer is a fantasy crpg. You guys act like we have plenty of those coming out and we can afford to be choosy.

I play more than fantasy crpgs so the fact that it's a fantasy crpg isn't quite enough to make me enthusiastic.

Killing is kind of like playin' a basketball game. I am there. and the other player is there. and it's just the two of us. and I put the other player's body in my van. and I am the winner. - Nice Pete.

I really need to start ordering some books based on this universe. I might as well start reading about another one as 4th edition D&D seems to have killed off everyone / everything.

For a great DnD alternative read Talislanta, its on the top 20 best RPGs ever made on rpg.net and its free now!

http://talislanta.com/?page_id=5

Every single edition and all supplements released for download by author. I suggest you start with the 4th edition as it has everything in one book. The rules are barely 20 pages long!

D&D may be omnipresent but its far from killed off everything.

In fact I'd be willing to bet that DnD is on a steady decline ever since fourth editon and the rise of Pathfinder. Now I'm no great fan of Pathfinder as its a re skinned DnD and I had just about enough of the latter to last me a lifetime. However I won't shed any tears over D&D's eventual fall into obscurity.

If you wan't something sci fi gothic space opera like WH40k try Fading Suns. I bet you'd like it.

Thank you, much appreciated.

Er, no.

Fading Suns is a space opera:

The action is set in a future medieval-analogue empire built on the remains of a previous, more sophisticated human galaxy-spanning civilization made possible by ancient "Jumpgates".

The atmosphere is strongly reminiscent of Frank Herbert's Dune and of the Hyperion stories by Dan Simmons, but borrows from many other science fiction books and movies as well.

Power is administered by noble houses, guilds and by the monolithic Holy Church. Psionic powers exist but psionicists are often hunted down and killed by the Church (or led back to orthodoxy and enrolled in the Church's ranks). The Church is also capable of producing miracles through Theurgic rites, a kind of divine sorcery.

While most roleplaying situations arise from the strict codes regulating the everyday life of the empire's citizens, the imperial age is rife with opportunities for adventure: following the fall of the old regime and the following centuries of darkness and warfare, many worlds have slipped back to a pre-civilized state, and a number of alien threats lurk in the shadows.

Players take the roles of members of the aristocracy, of the various merchant guilds or of a number of religious sects, and alien characters are also available.

It sounds like WH40k but its really much much larger. The books are available for cheap now as a third edition is coming in 2012.

И погибе Српски кнез Лазаре,
И његова сва изгибе војска,
Седамдесет и седам иљада;
Све је свето и честито било
И миломе Богу приступачно.

It's sad that Dune is even more underused than Warhammer in computer games. Only five Dune games are out there, four of them strategy.

Well this is the next best thing and its crying for a PC game. I found the core rulebook and supplements fascinating reading.

For anyone interested here's a youtube channel where a cool dude reviews pnp RPG's - his review of Fading Suns:

Све је свето и честито било
И миломе Богу приступачно.

I'd rather see a CRPG made on Elric of Melnibone or Hawkmoon's story. But it's already been said.

The important thing about 40k isn't the story, but how it's told. That's why a lot of 40k stuff sucks. >.>

Haven't read much SM stuff outside the HH series, they get the weapons right there for the most part, other than generic 'swords' - switch around from power to chain and back, etc.

Should really read CS Goto's stuff.

I've only heard of his works, need to subject myself to them to get it all firsthand :(

Bolter porn would imply that they got the weapon right. Which is rarely the case.

Yeah, I'm always confused by that, too. Bolt goes in, then explodes. It's not very complicated.

i always pictured the bolter having the same effect on a person that the gauss rifle does in fallout 2. *gunshot sound* *half the targets body gets splattered*

One of the biggest issues is that they don't really accept the fact that this is the grimdark reality. In Warhammer, humans are just a resource for the empire, but in every book humanity and it's life isn't treated as such. Add to that the fact that the lead character are always the noble ones... it just gets nausiating.

Probably the two best authors are Dan Abnett (Gaunts Ghosts) and Ghram McNiel. OH! And Sandy Mitchell, who's main character is trying so hard not to be in the spotlight he ends up as one of the biggest heroes in the galaxy.

Ian Watson wrote some good books back when I was still involved in the hobby, as i recall there was a very good book on aspiring space marines of the imperial fists chapter.

Quite an experience to live in misery isn't it? That's what it is to be married with children.

I've seen things you people can't even imagine. Pearly Kings glittering on the Elephant and Castle, Morris Men dancing 'til the last light of midsummer. I watched Druid fires burning in the ruins of Stonehenge, and Yorkshiremen gurning for prizes. All these things will be lost in time, like alopecia on a skinhead. Time for tiffin.

"Sons of Dorn"?

My favourite oldie would be William King. I still enjoy some of the older books.

Looked it up, apparently it was called simply enough "Space Marine" and is no longer considered canon. Gave a very different vibe to the modern interpretation of the Astartes but a much more realistic one.

I liked Dark Crusade's protrayal of space marines. All Thule had to say during stronghold missions was "You can't break us!" and "Die xeno filth!", and managed to lose every single verbal duel in the game. Even against the orks and tau!
