Fun fact: a friend of mine is renting a server to play on, but we cant get to it because the server browser will only index 1/10 of available servers, there is no function to find a server via IP and they have actually gone in and disabled the console commands which would have enabled you to do so.

Gametrailers review of Black Ops. I had no idea what Tale was talking about mentioning Zork.

Are you telling me it doesn't have Zork?

As the video review shows, it does indeed have Zork and a cool looking top down arcade shooter hidden in the game! Kind of funny, but I've never played Zork before and my first experience with it will be on a Call of Duty game.

STORY TIME:

ok I've been posting on these boards for a while now and so this may or may not come out of left field, but I really, really like call of duty 4 and Modern Warfare 2.

I've never played them online (ok maybe for an hour or two about a year ago). I don't really like online shooters (except left4dead, but thats different).

so why do I like them?

honestly?

i don't really know but maybe this long ass story will explain:

I got CoD 4 for xmas when it came out and popped it in, knowing nothing about it except that it was considered a better than average console shooter. The last console shooter I liked was perfect dark, I thought halo was a crappy game with bad art and level design and good but totally ill-fitting music trying to church it up.

anyway, so I started up CoD 4 and was totally caught off guard by the opening of the game. (SPOILER!!!! you die in the opening, then begin play again as a totally different character END SPOILER!!!!)

as soon as that happened I thought to myself "hey that was pretty cool, maybe this game has a bit more to it than just pew pew or whatever noise guns make in video games". The gameplay really gets going and its pretty fun, but fairly mindless. A few hours later I got to the sniper mission and the subsequent escape from said sniper mission. bam. now I was in heaven.

Those two missions were a self contained little story about a junior sniper and his badass scottish senior officer going deep into enemy territory to snipe a bitch and then snipe a helicopter pilot and then run like hell through minefields and explosions and chasing dogs and gunfire and then badass mr. scotsman gets his leg shot and you carry him while still running like hell until you get to the field where the chopper is waiting (except of course its not there) and you have to hold out for a few agonizing minutes while being swarmed by enemies and just when it looks like the end the chopper arrives (but its not over yet!) and then you have to pick up your commander and run through the swarm to get to it and escape.

never before in a fps (not even alyx in ep 2) have I felt so close to an npc as that awesome scottish dude who I had to carry through the level. I was totally immersed in the game and in what was happening and I REALLY wanted to save him and escape.

to cut things short I will say there is another moment in MW2 that also made me completely and totally WANT something to happen in the game to the point where I became heavily emotionally invested. Not to mention that MW2 lacks the annoying infinitely spawning enemies that CoD4 had.

so actually, that long story did help, cause now I realized why I like them so much, they actually get me absorbed enough that I develop an emotional response to the game. Halo and its ilk never came close to making me care about what was happening, it was just pew pew pew and explosions and no heart.

almost all of my favorite games are ones that make me care about the characters, story, or world. If a game can't grab me, then its just a diversion.

So me, entrerix, whose favorite games are Fallout 1, Planescape torment, and Deus ex. (in roughly that order) totally loves Cod4 and MW2. Why did I write all this? because some people on these boards wonder why anyone could like call of duty who isn't 12 years old. Now you know why at least one grown up 28 year old 22 year gaming veteran does.

the second reason why I wrote this? I want someone who owns black ops to tell me if the game is worth getting if i will never touch the multiplayer and think that CoD4 and MW2 should not have had multiplayer either.

call me crazy, im sure some already do.

'Call Of Duty: Black Ops' Shatters Sales Record

First-day total reaches $360 million in video game sales, Activision reports.

By Antone Gonsalves , InformationWeek

November 11, 2010 03:27 PM

Best PC Games Of All Time"Call of Duty: Black Ops" brought in $360 million in sales during the first 24 hours of its release, setting a record for video game sales at a time when the industry is slumping.

The latest version of the popular franchise easily beat its predecessor and previous record-holder, "Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2," which racked up $310 million in day-one sales, publisher Activision Publishing said Thursday. The sales figures for both games are for North America and the United Kingdom only.

"Call of Duty: Black Ops" marks the second consecutive year that the franchise has set a day-one launch record. Released Nov. 9, retailers sold 5.6 million copies of the game in the first 24 hours. In addition, an unprecedented 12,000 retailers held midnight openings to meet demand among got-to-have-it-first fans.

Bobby Kotick, chief executive of parent Activision Blizzard, said in a statement that the video game is on track to beat last year's five-day global sales record of $550 million for "Modern Warfare 2." More than 25 million gamers play some version of "Call of Duty," connecting with each other through the game's online component.

"Call of Duty" is available for PCs and all the major video game consoles, including the Sony PlayStation 3, Microsoft Xbox 360 and the Nintendo Wii. The game, first released in October 2003, is also available on handheld consoles, the Apple iPhone and Resarch in Motion's BlackBerry.

The success of "Black Ops" is good news for the video game industry, since software sales help to drive console sales. In September, overall sales of the industry at physical retail stores was down 8% year over year, which followed a 10% drop in August. However, sales for the rest of the year are expected to improve, given the scheduled release of popular games and the release of the Kinect and the Move, motion-sensing add-ons for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, respectively.

I feel like such a whore now and this is sending the wrong message - that brand name is king. BLOPS is inferior to MW2 in every aspect, yet it outsells it by $50 million. Although that could be Wii sales, since they werent greedy enough to hock out a garbage port of MW2 for nintendo.

I played the BLOPS campaign and I actually liked the game. I like it how in a recent turn of events, as RPGs have been dumbed down and adventure games disappeared, FPSs have "smartened up" and gotten more focus on story.

Sure, it's silly at times, and it's much more forgiving than older FPSs, but it has some kind of charm. Especially the "swimming around in Vietnam", the Baikonur mission and the mission in the Arctic are very beautifully crafted levels.

If I weren't used to violent computer games I would probably have laughed my ass of how exaggerated some parts of the game are. Maybe I play too few games these days and tend to forget how many men are in the industry compared to women (with all the ideals and stuff that entails), and how jaded these men are from playing thousands of violent computer games while never having witnessed war themselves. The game really takes itself seriously and if you're a stranger to similar games or movies I doubt you will find the SP playable at all.

I... er... what?

Which has the better campaign?

Based on story alone Black Ops destroys MW2 which had one one of the dumbest stories I've ever seen in a video game that was trying to take itself seriously. The stand-out moments were better in Black Ops IMHO, but the low point was the lowest in the CoD franchise for me. Luckily it was a short section.

This just in: the story to this game is actually pretty ****ing good. Especially the mission in the arctic with Reznov and Dimitri (the guy you play as during World at War). That was downright chilling.

I love how they use Reznov constantly. He was easily the best character in World at War and his role here is awesome.

Im still so dismayed that they chose to set the game in the 60's, while completely ****ing the cold war setting in the arse, that I have barely touched the campaign. The cold war was about sneaking about in east berlin and being murdered by poisoned umbrellas, not this rubbish.

1) Accept it has very little connection to the real cold war

2) ????

3) Fun

I find this an interesting statement, and I'd tend to agree. I used to really dislike almost all FPS because of the way they were designed in the 'old days' but as things seem to combine a little more all the time, I find there can be one here and there that I can enjoy. I'm not very into military settings, however, so I'll pass on trying this one.

FNV is actually a more satysfying FPS experience than BLOPS single player campaign.

It's a whole 'nother beast. FO:NV isn't focused on combat and cutscenes nearly as much as BLOPS.

BLOPS has a lot of cutscenes? Urgh. I don't like lots of cutscenes in more action-oriented games. Definitely pass then.

dumbest comment of the year

It is no rocket science that the only reason the game was still successful despite all the missteps, was due to the brand name and massive marketing blitz that surrounded it.

Here I thought I had spent 467 hours playing it because it was a really good game, but on second thought I guess it was all in the advertising and strong attraction of the Call of Duty IP :(
