That's the trouble.. a drama is a drama. a comedy is a comedy (well.. mostly).

But sci-fi has a lot of very different sub-genres that don't easily compare to each other. And it gets mixed in with a lot of others...

Edit: Then of course there's the drama or suspense hiding behind the veil of sci-fi... But that's identifying whether the sci-fi is the key aspect or just fluff around the story...

Star Wars did to fantasy, wizards and orphans into heroes the same as Firefly did to cowboys, smugglers and hookers.

Hm, do you think if Whedon had used that as the tag line "It's cowboys, smugglers and hookers.. in space!" to the tv companies they'd have let him run it longer?

aliens is awesome don't get me started.

its also a movie, not a series. dont even get me started. i swear to god...

the only thing i need now is for someone to say warhammer 40k is a ripoff of starcraft and then i can completely lose it.

edit: why is it so hard for someone to LOVE aliens, star wars, and blade runner, and consider each of them the absolute best movie of their respective genres?

(sci-fi war movie, space opera, cyberpunk noir -respectively)

I love all of those, amongst others. Except for Star Wars and Star Trek. Especially Star Trek. That was hate on first sight.

Boo, if you know someone who says WH40k is a ripoff of Starcraft, then I'm booking a cheap flight and I'll hold the fether while you kick him.

That would be really classic, considering that Andy Chambers apparently even worked on SCII. :D

You're a cheery wee bugger, Nep. Have I ever said that?

Tales of Monkey Island - Chapter 1, so far so good (although, yeah, seeing as I got the games for $1 a pop I'm fairly forgiving at this point).

In 7th grade, I teach the students how Chuck Norris took down the Roman Empire, so it is good that you are starting early on this curriculum.

Unfortunately, no. Its weird how few people actually make the connection. Blizzard did a good repainting job for the stuff that is borrowed from WH40K.

Still the power armors, Zerg/Tyranids... they did borrow stuff.

This is the only source I've seen on this. Do you have any more concrete proof? I looked through a boatload of articles on the history of WarCraft and Blizzard Entertainment and it isn't mentioned anywhere else. My guess is that this blogger bases this on the sole fact that it was, for 2 months time, called "Chaos Studios."

I originally read it somewhere else - this I just googled an hour ago. Its not exactly fresh news.

I don't see why its so hard to believe.

Heh, when I first saw Starcraft way back, my first thoughts were something like "They've got Space Marines, Eldar and Tyranids, now where are the Orks?" (I was playing Epic40k Orks at the time).

We are talking LoF grade revisionism if Starcraft predates 40k. I have a copy of Rogue Trader from 1988!

She's everyone's favorite. Though I also like Jerro and wish Obsidian would do another forgotten realms game just so they could use Mephasm again.

Gothic 1 continues. It's not a very long game - I'm around level 6 and I think I've done most of the quests before having to choose between one of the camps. I suppose the length is similar to Risen, or a bit shorter.

It's also not as difficult as I expected - I think playing Gothic 3 vanilla (with the stunlock boars) built up my tolerance and now even the real Gothic isn't Gothic-difficult. I still need to learn how to fight humanoids properly, though.
