Slowtrain Posted July 29, 2010 Posted July 29, 2010 I don't believe in what he says, espicially about the 'not listening' to their internet forums. Both Bioware and Bethesda appear grotesquely enraptured about what the fans think. Probably explains their success. And the tediousness of their games. Notice how I can belittle your beliefs without calling you names. It's a useful skill to have particularly where you aren't allowed to call people names. It's a mistake to get too drawn in/worked up. I mean it's not life or death, it's just two guys posting their thoughts on a message board. If it were personal or face to face all the usual restraints would be in place, and we would never have reached this place in the first place. Try to remember that.
Monte Carlo Posted July 29, 2010 Posted July 29, 2010 I couldn't give a toss personally about the retro-design of character models (FWIW I think the new Qunari look cool but seem to jar completely with the ultra-disciplined race portrayed in DA:O), but Dave Gaider's thin-skinned and uppity response to the faithful on the Bioware forae is instructive.

Volourn Posted July 29, 2010 Posted July 29, 2010 "As I said, I'm more curious about the changes to dwarves and elves, though Gaider implied they're more subtle (differentiating silhouettes and animations most probably)." We've already seen DA2 dwarves. If there were any changes, they were very minor. The big difference is the dwarf was beardless but Gaider said that was just that personal dwarf's own choice. "but Dave Gaider's thin-skinned and uppity response to the faithful on the Bioware forae is instructive." Anytime a developer smacks down arrogant, evil, greedy, scumbag, judgemental, piece of crap 'fans' (custoemrs) makes me smile. It has nothing to do with being thin-skinned and more about putting punks in their place. The stink people make over even the smallest of things need to get smacked down. It's BIO game. They make it the way they want. You don't like it, don't buy it. And, no, internet geeks are not in the right because theya re 'potential' custoimers. Afterall, these same potential customers whined about DA's marketing scheme as being 'crap' yet DA is BIO's most successful game to date barring ME2 potentially. BIO knows what theya re doing. Internet geeks do not. P.S. This doesn't mean I agree with all changes for DA2 but crying, and whining, and getting all pyscho stalker possessive over the game is pathetic. The scumbags on the BIO baords 9and elswwhre) crying about changes because it potentially 'conflcits with stuff in DA1' are dumb, and are no better than the FO fanatics. sorophx Posted July 29, 2010 Posted July 29, 2010 BIO knows what theya re doing. sure they do, probably that's why I stopped buying their games after I had played Mass Effect. Walsingham said: I was struggling to understand ths until I noticed you are from Finland. And having been educated solely by mkreku in this respect I am convinced that Finland essentially IS the wh40k universe.
Monte Carlo Posted July 29, 2010 Posted July 29, 2010 Vol, the sketch is this. Internet fans / forum dwellers = no power. We are teeming mass of gaming plankton. Developer = power, holds all the cards in this particular context. If the dev doesn't like the plankton then ignore them. Don't post stuff like 'it's my ball and I'm taking it home now.' It comes across as precious and gauche. If Dave is as unbothered as he says he is he wouldn't post at all, which is why it is instructive. As you might have gathered, I'm not very taken with the Bio forum. Nonetheless, they are dedicated people and the people who pay Dave's salary. That doesn't mean he has to pander to them, but a dignified silence is better than the soap opera he's indulging in.
Tigranes Posted July 29, 2010 Posted July 29, 2010 Volo's frothing at the mouth at imaginary strawmen again, but just to come back to the issue - yeah, I don't see a big deal here. There's nothing wrong with a few judicious retcons - retcons suck when they change things for the worse or hugely disrupt the canon. Hell, as Volo/etc pointed out, we see so few qunari in DAO anyway - what if the qunari race has blue qunari, grey qunari, red qunari, ones with horn,s without horns, etc? Not a problem. For me the new look isn't a big deal, just wondering whether the whole 'hyperdisciplined race with very different but very coherent logic' deal gets better developed, or thrown out the window. edit: also, You do know that humans come in different colors, right? Thorton_AP Posted July 30, 2010 Posted July 30, 2010 There are times that I think adhering to canon is overrated. Changing the art style of a character is pretty minor on the list of canon grievances in my opinion. I do like that they seem to be creating a more distinct look for the various races though.

Volourn Posted July 30, 2010 Posted July 30, 2010 "Nonetheless, they are dedicated people and the people who pay Dave's salary." HAHAHAHAHA! No, they don't. BIO/EA do. Posters do NOt pay Gaider's salary. nor do customers. When you buy a game, you pay for the game. That's it. By your logic, customer shave the right to fire/hire employees but they don't. The bosses make that decision just like they decided what to do with your money once you buy the product.Gaider answers to the bosses. Let me ask this? Who signs Gaider's checks? I guarantee it's not some customer's name on that check. Trust me on that. "It would be awesome if they would say exactly that in that very tone at their forums." Absolutely. I'm not criticizing particularly. Adjusting a product to meet fan expectations , ie always giving the fans what they think they want, and using the largest "movement" of fan desires as the basis for that, makes decent financial sense. It's a safe play and not very inspiring, but it will generally assure some degree of financial success. The resulting product is often not terribly interesting though. WorstUsernameEver Posted July 30, 2010 Posted July 30, 2010 One of the things I disliked about DAO was that the characters were all pretty obviously the same basic character rig distorted for a particular species. DGaider has confirmed that it won't be like that anymore.. well, at least for genders, still no word for different races, though considering they don't have to work all the PC animations for them and this 'putting distance between the various races' thing, I'd bet on elves and dwarves and qunari having their own rigs.

One of the things I disliked about DAO was that the characters were all pretty obviously the same basic character rig distorted for a particular species. Yeah, but the creatures were some of the more awesome designs ever and they changed the ogre. The ogre was the face of DA, every poster, every promo, it was an intimidating creature. Now it looks like someone shat a horned beast onto a pile of sand. I'd say the answer to that question is kind of like the answer to "who's the sucker in this poker game?"* *If you can't tell, it's you.

Orogun01 Posted July 31, 2010 Posted July 31, 2010 "The ogre was the face of DA" O RLY? I'd have thought it be the dragon. Or Morrigan. That was Morrigan!? Unless you are completely blind i'm sure that you have noticed the Ogre behind Morrigan in each poster, and it was featured more than those butt ugly blood dragon logos. Even the GI issue had a big stinking Ogre in it. How can you say that it isn't the face of DA? Volourn Posted July 31, 2010 Posted July 31, 2010 How can say the dragon isn't when it's in the logo? And, everyone likes to look at the hot gal than the big, ugly, stupid ogre. Ogre is just a kill. Gone and forgtoten; but dragons and pretty gals are forever. You mean like that chick in NWN who is totally memorable and loveable? Hey, companies might think it makes business sense on a grand scale, but don't try and pass it off as The Truth. Anyway, where's this coming from? Obviously it's a pity they had to turn Flemeth into a clown with a nude fetish, but I'm more concerned about general design. After all DAO had the naked dryad (though that made more sense) - and the video game media went slobber slobber at how nekkid she was (bloody hell). Are we going to get wear-nothing elves, now? You assume that all BIO games. I don't. Stick with actual truth. "You mean like that chick in NWN who is totally memorable and loveable?" One of many half naked video game grils that are awesome. More than some stupid, ugly ogre. That's to be sure. "Hey, companies might think it makes business sense on a grand scale, but don't try and pass it off as The Truth." Exceopt it is. Unless you gonna argue that more people prefer big, ugly ogres to dragons or hot women? Please prove me wrong. If you can, I'll find the biggest ogre and sleep with it. K?
