Niten_Ryu Posted July 7, 2010 Posted July 7, 2010 I used to play WoW over 3 years and never posted on their offical boards. There was no need as guild boards and specialist sites like elitistjerks you got all the info you need. That don't mean I didn't check offical WoW boards from time to time and anything to make 'em cleaner is probably a good thing. Let's play Alpha Protocol My misadventures on youtube.

LadyCrimson Posted July 7, 2010 Posted July 7, 2010 --@Thorton_AP - I agree about the lvl1 alt situation. It certainly would help, I'd think, if they only allowed one username/chr. If you don't want your high lvl main to be harassed in-game & choose a low level alt, you're stuck with that one forever. --@Gorgon - If Blizz thinks this works well on WoW forums, it wouldn't surprise me if they decided to implement it on all their forums. Could be a 'test run' on one of their current biggest fora to see how it's received/works etc. --I'd also be fine if it was first names only. You'd have to have a first name like "The Artist Formerly Known as Prince" to make that very risky. --Thinking a bit, you'd be surprised how many people seem unaware how easy it is to get info via searching, even minus Facebook. Utterly clueless. Also, it's not just the info YOU put out about yourself on the web, it's also the info business, local news, work, schools, angry friends (haha) and so on might put up there, that you (may) have no control over. I have a friend who barely uses the 'net at all (no social networking) & I could still find all kinds of info on her when I tried. Whether this bothers someone or not is up to them but you see the point. Some (especially us geeky folk) may be pretty savvy about such risks, but as the internet has exploded, many many more are not. It's one thing to agree to/not mind to real names when you're aware of what it could mean...what about those who aren't? The more I think about it, the more I hope all the protesting will make Blizzard soon change their minds. Surely they could've come up with something else/better to try. “Things are as they are. Looking out into the universe at night, we make no comparisons between right and wrong stars, nor between well and badly arranged constellations.” – Alan Watts
Deadly_Nightshade Posted July 7, 2010 Posted July 7, 2010 big brother watches over you and protects you, but does not really mess with your life and criticize your decisions, while big sister does Uhhhh... I'm almost positive that you're mistaken about that. While he made his point, I do honestly hope that that godmode chap faces legal ramification for his actions. And I hope he doesn't. "Geez. It's like we lost some sort of bet and ended up saddled with a bunch of terrible new posters on this forum." -Hurlshot
kirottu Posted July 7, 2010 Posted July 7, 2010 As said already only way to get official tech support is to post on their forums. I get about three wow scams per week to my e-mail and I sure as hell don This post is not to be enjoyed, discussed, or referenced on company time.
kirottu Posted July 7, 2010 Posted July 7, 2010 (edited) Official update. We have been planning this change for a very long time. During this time, we have thought ahead about the scope and impact of this change and predicted that many people would no longer wish to post in the forums after this change goes live. We are fine with that, because we want to change these forums dramatically in a positive and more constructive direction. It's been very obvious over the last few years that the forums are an exceptionally valuable source of information both for players and for us to gather feedback. There are many threads on this forum now, and over the last few years, that people have been constructively discussing many aspects of the game. They've received new wisdom and have then been able to go back to the game and enjoy it further with the new knowledge acquired through the forums. These threads, however, can often be lost amongst a great deal of other threads that are basically filled with trolling, name calling, flaming, off-topic conversations and that's just a small amount of some of the content that has been found in these forums over the years. We don't want that anymore, and we believe the Real ID change will bring about a lot of the improvement that we are hoping for. There's a lot of scare-mongering going on about the change, but there seems a need to make something very clear. The forums have always been an optional extra -- something you can choose to participate in if you wish to. With our Real ID changes for the forums, this is still the case. The only difference will be, if you do choose to participate in the forums, then you will do so by using your real name. But only after you've been warned and accepted this in advance. US forums have a thread 1000 pages long(I **** you not) and Europe has thread 200 pages long and both of them are filled with quite negative feedback. 213374U Posted July 7, 2010 Posted July 7, 2010 A couple things that strike me: That mod who got his info. posted apparently has an open facebook account. You can pretty much expect that sort of thing when you put all your information in an easy to find place. I'm sure someone here could do some decent research and come away with my vitals, but it wouldn't be a one step process. Exactly. It's a myth that just from your real name anyone can find whatever they want about you. I could give my real name, and I guarantee you, save for some useless facts regarding join/leave dates on my military life there's nothing about me on the 'net, because I make a point of keeping my personal data, well, personal. I'm not even on the phone directory. This thinking is also a bit paranoid. HR depts already do a ton of data mining and background checks. They are the ones most likely to engage in any sort of consistent "stalking" via the Blizz boards. So... don't say anything you may later regret? You know, like IRL? The police? If they are fishing for data on you, you have bigger problems than this... While he made his point, I do honestly hope that that godmode chap faces legal ramification for his actions. We can sit here smugly going "hahaha told you," but the reality of it is he demonstrated his complete lack of integrity in doing what he did. In order to prove a point, he decided to post someone's information all over for all to see. There are better ways he could have gone about doing it. This is a bit like that Starforce cluster**** some years ago with some dev posting a warez link to a product that didn't use conventional DRM to make the point that EVERYONE should adopt SF-like tech... hilarious. On the update: looks like they are going forward with it no matter what. At the very least it'll be interesting to see how it turns out, for sure. - When he is best, he is a little worse than a man, and when he is worst, he is little better than a beast.

Malcador Posted July 7, 2010 Posted July 7, 2010 What's the "benefit" to this again ? Have to wonder what goes on in meetings when they decide on things like this. I'm almost positive that you're mistaken about that. While he made his point, I do honestly hope that that godmode chap faces legal ramification for his actions. And I hope he doesn't. Hey, if you're cool with someone going around inconveniencing someone's life, then that sure speaks volumes about your character and integrity too.
Malcador Posted July 7, 2010 Posted July 7, 2010 Oh, no! Not inconveniencing someone! Why has elegance found so little following? Elegance has the disadvantage that hard work is needed to achieve it and a good education to appreciate it. - Edsger Wybe Dijkstra
Thorton_AP Posted July 7, 2010 Author Posted July 7, 2010 (edited) Oh, no! Not inconveniencing someone! Apparently the dude's entire Facebook profile has either been locked or deleted due to abuse. I have no doubt that these internet retards are actually dialing up that phone number (which in retrospect had less certainty that it's the right one as the thread went on) just to "prove a point." Basically you have a lot of angry people that so highly value their ability to post on some company's website that they've resorted to real-life harassment simply so they can go "see!? See!? Don't take away my precious ability to post anonymously on the forums!!!!!" Nevermind stopping by the address (which was later shown to possibly be incorrect as well). Since you think it's not a big deal though, why don't you go onto Blizzard's forums and post your contact information as well. It's just some inconvenience right? It's apparently a good way to prove your point! Edited July 7, 2010 by Thorton_AP
Malcador Posted July 7, 2010 Posted July 7, 2010 Well if he's being harassed in real life then that's too much and far different than "inconvenienced", but stuff like his FB profile being locked, eh, big deal. And it does prove that using your real name, for no real reason other than to do so does have its negatives - especially with a community like WoW's. Why has elegance found so little following? Elegance has the disadvantage that hard work is needed to achieve it and a good education to appreciate it. - Edsger Wybe Dijkstra
