Fallout: New Vegas

Recommended Posts

Visuals are absolutely horrible but that's not Obsidians fault (more like Gamebryo and facegen) and good thing is that players in general have already accepted 'em in Oblivion and Fallout 3 so hopefully that don't have huge negative impact on sales. New Vegas seem to be really empty, especially compared to more modern engine games like Assassins Creed (Anvil) or GTA4 (Rage).

Too bad iD was bought bit too late, as it would have been awesome to get Fallout New Vegas on iD Tech5.

Let's play Alpha Protocol

the way I see it, we all ready know mostly what NV is going to look like: FO3 wasn't the prettiest game on the planet but it was good enough. With the short dev cycle and the fact that NV is not FO4, to expect anything other than basically the same visual experience is not a reasonable expectation.

NV appears at this point to be more than meeting expectation in all areas and exceeding it in most.

In the end that's all you can ask for in this situation.

Notice how I can belittle your beliefs without calling you names. It's a useful skill to have particularly where you aren't allowed to call people names. It's a mistake to get too drawn in/worked up. I mean it's not life or death, it's just two guys posting their thoughts on a message board. If it were personal or face to face all the usual restraints would be in place, and we would never have reached this place in the first place. Try to remember that.

From Bethesda's Forums clarification on strength requirements :

Strength requirements are soft requirements. You can still use a weapon if you don't meet the requirement, but it will sway (if a firearm) or swing more slowly (if a melee/unarmed weapon).

EDIT: It's also a progressive penalty. If you are 1 or 2 points below a weapon's requirement, the penalty is not very pronounced. If you have a 2 ST and pick up a minigun, that's when it's really bad.

Lets see, at this point the bad/weak points that I can see are:

-bad graphics ( which actually doesn't bother me),

-unreliable/horrible face-generator,

-doubts about the Voice-Over,

-doubts about the bugs.

-The first one is leftover from the engine itself so with a 2 year cycle (18 months of development more or less) there isn't much Obs can do other than tweaking the models.

-The second one is also Beth's gift to Obs as that thing is more or less leftover from Oblivion. I hope Obs were able to tweak the base algorthims a bit to produce better results but so far there has been no info on this.

-VO is another sore point. Usually not the story Npcs but the random/filler npcs. I really hope Obs has/had some budget (and disc space) to hire some unknown actors to have a wide range of voices instead of 5 - 10 different voices for the whole goon army.

-Bugs... To be honest Obs doesn't have a good record on their debugging. On top of that, open world games are notoriously hard to debug and they were handled a huge buggy mess as a base too. I really hope they will be able to control the game and at least ship it without game stopping bugs. Little ones can be fixed later but major ones are going to be killer for this game.

Mr Sawyer, is there any clarification you can give us about the Voice Overs? Like a rough count of different voices you hired/are using for generic v-o?

Mmmh.. you're talking about the character creation sliders, right? I think they've added the age slider and maybe a couple of others (previews mentioned that Obsidian added 'a couple of sliders more' but never mentioned anything else than the age slider..) but I doubt much work has been done on that front.

They would probably need to rework the base models I think, and they probably opted to place their artistic resources elsewhere.

We can only hope... only hope...

I see in the g4tv demo, a pump action grenade launcher like the EX 41/China Lake GL.

Neat.

But for all of us, there will come a point where it does matter, and it's gonna be like having a miniature suit-head shoving sticks up your butt all the time. - Tigranes

Glad they're putting the option of killing people or not in the players' hands.
some classics such as pacifist path and idiot dialogue came back. Also, there are some features planned for Van Buren such as sneak skills to hide weapons (IIRC, I think they got this idea from a movie).

Well, talking of that, probably the most important feature was the reputation system, although we saw parts of which in some of their past works. o:)

From "Upping the Awesome Quotient":
everyone's favorite sex casino

What in hell is a 'sex casino?'

Maybe, a pregnancy Russian roulette like this? (Sorry, it was bit distasteful but, seriously, at times, I feel this world crazier than any fiction...) :(

For some, this may sound ironical but Bethesda successfully made quite a huge fan base who want encore and it would help the sales for Obsidian. I rather fear bug-bug-buggy scenario but, if Obsidian gnome ghoul units are struggling with severe bug-fixes, the release date sounds really bold.

From the IGN E3 article

Another fun weapon is the incendiary grenade. These are like normal grenades but set your enemy ablaze. The fun thing is that they can often knock enemies into the air. So with a fortunate throw, you can blast an enemy up ten or even fifteen feet in a trail of flames. And the best part? You can juggle them in the air with a second grenade explosion. If you can get a couple of grenades to juggle an enemy over the edge of a hillside, you may just have time to switch to your spear and take off their flaming head mid-air.
Then, this was what Sawyer was mumbling about rag dolls... It is totally unrealistic but I think the human fireworks would make a good laugh especially since they were intractable different from one-shot Fatman.

I really have nothing critical to say about the FO:NV at this point.

I can't remember the last time that happened to a game in development.

Still have concerns about some of the content, but without context of playing the game I really can't criticize.

Hope it's a big winner for Beth,. Obs, and gaming in general. And for me.

Same story here.

One of the screenshots released by Bethesda I posted was called 'FNVBeta' or something like that so... let's hope that's really an indication of the game being already in beta and not just wishful thinking on my part.

After all 5 months for polishing (not just bug squashing but fine tuning animations, graphics and such) seems like a decent time, especially considering the tech is already known by Bethesda (so they hopefully helped Obsidian when it comes to implementation and bug fixing).

WorstUsernameEver:

No I wasn't talking about the character creation screen. Sure that could have been better too (with decent base heads to start your work from) but my main problem is the randomly created npcs in the game like nameless soldiers, raiders and so on. Most of the hostile no name npcs in FO:3 were ugly (or went downhill from there).

Ah.. I can't really comment on that.

It is possible, but honestly, considering how many NPCs there are in a sandbox game like this, I can forgive one or two 'deformed' NPCs (I'm not talking about ugly, I'm talking about faces that don't look human, like pretty much every face in Fallout 3 except the important characters... and even there...).

What I won't accept is to see a 'Moira' again. Seriously.. maybe the longest side quest in the game, one of the first merchant you encounter in the game, probably the one that you'll see more if you make Megaton your base of operations and..... you make her deformed? Seriously, she looks like a grey alien.

I understand the radiation and all that stuff, and I can put up with some cartoony face design (see Aradesh and Maxson in Fallout) but... that was disturbing.

Judging by the previews so far, all the magazines and online sites will be whining about the outdated graphics and complain about the 'add-on' feeling in their reviews. Not that I would give a **** about that, but I just don't want to be Fallout: New Vegas the last Fallout game done by Obsidian. I really like their minor improvements so far. And 'Fallout: Europe' done by Josh would be just ****ing awesome.

Man I'd love to be as good as Josh at doing presentations.
