Norway Builds the World's Most Humane Prison

My main interest in prison is protection for society. If being nice prevents a return to crime then I'm 100% for it. With a few exceptions for crimes where the effects on the victim are irreversible: murder, torture, rape etc.

I should have added: I don't believe that

a) I don't believe being nice - on its own - will reform prisoners

b) Some crimes have an element of planned choice rather than dysfunction. Fraud, and drug dealing spring to mind. i don't see how it can be logical to expect criminals in these areas to be reformed in this way.

c) the above planned criminals require deterrents to tackle. This prison would be a very weak deterrent.

Prison guards don't carry guns

It depends I suppose, on whether you are interested in revenge or rehabilitation. After long prison sentences many people are useless to society and will automatically return to their old criminal patterns because it's all they know. If this can help then why not. Most of you agree except for those crimes where you do want 'revenge' or safe long term storage away from society.

I don't put much stock in deterrent anyway. Who thinks about whether they have ping pong tables in prison before they do the deed.

Sounds like the northern prison policy in general: Much is focused on rehabilitation as possible. For some people, it might become too cushy though; In my hometown, it is no secret that some (maybe 10-20 of them) spend their summers working at short-time jobs and when fall is kicking in, they commit a smaller burglary like stealing a car stereo or a lawnmower.

They always turn themselves in and spend the winter in prison, only to repeat the cycle again by the next year.

P.S. Some of the programs are hilarious; i've seen Hells Angels-members attending "human interaction"-courses where they are trained to hug each other.

^Of course people who have comitted things such as murder are expelled from those programs. The worst ones, such as psychopaths who have murdered people spend the rest of their lives in a closed medical facility.

This might actually raise the crime rate - with every criminal wanting to be sent to that one. It almost sounds like the Playboy Mansion.

Except that Norway doesn't have a large and desperate population of poor people with no alternative.. People are always better off outside of prison, Scandinavian and especially Norwegian culture is a good detergent against crime in itself. People are easily ostracised for criminal conduct in a small community, and that means it can quickly be social suicide for however gets into prison.

Get people invested in their surroundings and well being of friends and countrymen and you'll see crime (here meaning theft, robbery, fraud etc) plummet.

Fortune favors the bald.

1) krez is dumber than we thought if he thinks Gromnir is "proud" of the U.S. prison population.

2) pelican bay does not house folks being incarcerated for simple drug offenses.

3) what makes you think that the folks at Halden is not housing persons for drug-related offenses... poor reading comprehension we s'pose.

HA! Good Fun!

Prison guards shouldn't be carrying guns, unless they're up in the watchtowers, right?

Look, Scandies are wacky. We love them for it. But they live in their own very unique homogenous Scandie nirvana, where building Disneyland prisons sort of works.

Well, it seems like 70% of the inmates will be deported after serving their sentence, since they are not norwegian to begin with.

- The rest of the 30% are of norwegian nationals, but behind the 6 meter wall, you can not hear a single norwegian word.

- The inmates are of 28 different nationalities.

- The prison itself is of a higher a standard than most other ones in Norway.

- It cost 1,3 billion norwegian kronor to build, and was opened by King Harald himself.

Linky.

The hospitality is amazing. We have much to learn.

So 70% of the prisoners were vacationing :shifty: Any chance that they just committed the crime to extend their stay?

I'd say the answer to that question is kind of like the answer to "who's the sucker in this poker game?"*
