Considering the fact that Troika was a one-game-at-a-time company, considering how long it took, etc, etc, it is very reasonable to assume that it made a loss.

Seriously, 128k is REALLY low sales for a PC game your studio depends on to survive.

On topic, its increasingly looking like an indefinite on-hold to me.

P.S. It is really wise to admit to working on a failed project on your resume?

Yes. Lots of projects are canceled. Also, a project's status rarely hinges on the activities of a single intermediate designer on a team of 40+ people.

Nope, it gave a profit, and sold right into the expectations of Atari. I remember talking about that with a happy Boyarsky.

Oh and what Sawyer said.

Hi Brios, thanks for my foot. :(

Profit at 128k? Really? That is quite surprising. Didn't they spend some time with the engine as well?

Because those are the NPD numbers, completely wrong. Since then NPD changed many things about the way they gather data to make the PC numbers, do note that their consoles numbers were (and still are) more rigorous.

When Leon saw that report he went to NMA to clear things up, those numbers were simply predictions that failed because of the low number of sample US stores they were using at the time, and other methodological problems. At that time he couldn't say what were the final figures for Vampire, but could confirm that Arcanum and ToEE had made a profit, as expected by the pblishers.

But Troika operations needed money from publishers at all times, so a few months without a signed deal for a new game was all it took to kill the company. They were a one game at a time company, unlike Obsidian, in that sense this company is in a better position and this might just be a hiccup.

Designer for canceled third-person action Aliens RPG (Xbox 360, PS3, & PC)

I think it's now appropriate to predict Sega's future AAA titles that the Aliens RPG was sacrificed for:

Sonic: [insert unoriginal title here]. In this game, Sonic utilizes the power of [insert mechanic gimmick here] to save the day again! - I just jizzed my pants.

Phantasy Star Online: episode whatever. Anime style online hack and slash linear dungeon crawler with recycled, unoriginal content. All that and a monthly fee?!? I better get my ass down to the shop and preorder, this is going to be huge!

What's going to happend to this forum? This thread? WAAAAAAH!

Just don't end up like Troika Obsidian.

Uh. A little confused here. Should I take the resume's info. with grain of salt or literally?

Edit.

Wait, nevermind. Offering job positions for Aliens in main page had been removed. Sux.

Once Sega officially announces the cancellation this forum will be shelved.

So start making fools of yourselves, because soon it will all wash away.

Sega won't announce it... ever. It's bad press for them to confirm their cancelled project and tough times.

- On a new adventure -

Well then the forums will be axed at some arbitrary point in the future, whenever the admins get around to it.

And Sega will continue to be mum on it, although it's hard to imagine how they'll dodge questions when promoting AvP3. It'll be an open secret.

Kinda news for Aliens Rpg http://www.amazon.co.uk/Sega-Aliens-Coloni...6923&sr=1-2

If A:CM is being released for sure Aliens Rpg should be since they said want to make a "serie" of aliens games. Not only 2 with AVP3 and Colonies.

I, uh, wouldn't take that page as any sort of sign of life.

"We don't comment on rumors."

They'll probably say that for years until the marketing team forgets it ever existed.

Just don't end up like Troika Obsidian.

If somehow rumors were true and Obsidian got the chance to develop BG3, that most likely wouldn't be an issue.

Considering it would be at Obsidian's best interest to salvage what assets were made for the Aliens game, what sort of Sci-fi game should Obsidian make this time? Something more akin to ME(Bioware's shadow again, lulz), or a more grounded sci-fi game akin to X-COM?

Maybe a mecha?

Or a Vampire hunter setting similar to Hellsing?

Sux. So depressing.

Interesting, thanks for that. So TOEE did profit. Surprises me, but in a good way.

Take a look at this piece of news:

Damn...

edit: Oops, funcroc sort of beat me to it. Sorry for that. Hope it isn't true. Sega really needs to say something (official) about this game, FFS.

I'd be sad if I actually thought it was a good idea in the first place.

"Alright, I've been thinking. When life gives you lemons, don't make lemonade - make life take the lemons back! Get mad! I don't want your damn lemons, what am I supposed to do with these? Demand to see life's manager. Make life rue the day it thought it could give Cave Johnson lemons. Do you know who I am? I'm the man who's gonna burn your house down! With the lemons. I'm going to to get my engineers to invent a combustible lemon that burns your house down!"

I hate you.

Hey now, my mother is huge and don't you forget it. The drunk can't even get off the couch to make herself a vodka drenched sandwich. Octopus suck.

...So Troika games made profit, but not enough to keep the company afloat even couple of months? Must be some new meaning of profit.

This post is not to be enjoyed, discussed, or referenced on company time.

...So Troika games made profit, but not enough to keep the company afloat even couple of months? Must be some new meaning of profit.

Because their business model, like most of the independent developers, was based in fees payed for each build delivered on time to the publisher, and that same publisher would get almost all the money after release. Think of it as advanced payments based on the expected future sales, so they wouldn't get the actual sales money. Therefore either they have a deal for another game to provide a new source of fees in advance or in just a few months they can go out of business.

Obsidian story isn't very different, but they have several projects, so they are covered, even if some downsizing is expected in case one project folds, which is the case now.

Yeah, yeah. TOEE made a profit. Seriously, what koolaid is Troika, and their fanboys drinking? 128k copies sold. Couldn't get anyone to give them backing for a game. Couldn't even convince Atari for a go ahead for TOEE expansions or sequels even though both companies were pimping the idea before release.

So.. what was this profit? $5? If Troika, TOEE, adn their games were so profitable, they'd still be in business. *Someone* would have hired them to develop a game. But, hey, if people want to keep the delusion that Troika was a successful company alive, more power to 'em.

P.S. I never said someone who worked on a 'canceled' or 'failed' game couldn't get a job; I just think that your resume is suppposed to highlight successes not failures. Of course, Rhomal *does* make a good point that the experience - any experience - does also have its perks too.

DWARVES IN PROJECT ETERNITY = VOLOURN HAS PLEDGED $250.

First I'm not a Troika fanboy, I didn't even buy ToEE, I never liked hack and slash games. Second I already explained that those figures are wrong, third I already explained how making profitable games can mean squat if you're an independent developer. It's not my fault if you're too stupid to understand that Volourn.

And Aliens isn't a "failure" in anyone's resume.

I never said it was a failure. I said canceled. (not even saying Aliens is canceled because of one guy's resume either). Please learn to read.

That quote doesn't mention Aliens at all. It was general context. Nice try, though. Nor does it state that it was a failure or canceled. Tsk, tsk.
