This game is a lot more complex than I realized on my first time through. Maybe I was rushing or something. CDP is a real bright spot as far as game developers go. I'm really interested to find out what there next project will be.

Notice how I can belittle your beliefs without calling you names. It's a useful skill to have particularly where you aren't allowed to call people names. It's a mistake to get too drawn in/worked up. I mean it's not life or death, it's just two guys posting their thoughts on a message board. If it were personal or face to face all the usual restraints would be in place, and we would never have reached this place in the first place. Try to remember that.

The posts are all short and no one is arguing. It's a pretty painless read.

I started up the enhanced edition and am stuck at the same part I was last time. The end of chapter 1 with the Hell Hound fight. I have my blade coated with spectre oil and a few potions already applied before entering but I always die a brutally quick death and the the witch isn't much help as she goes down even quicker than I do.

I don't know If I'll continue past this point -- having to repeat the dialogue everytime before the fight is quickly draining my will to keep going. This was the one thing in the game I wanted changed the most :(

If you press escape, you can skip the dialogue. Also, that battle is a piece of piss. Focus on Aard.

Yeah, sometimes you can perform a coup de grace on the head dog, if you're lucky with Aard. I don't remember that battle being particularly hard. I did have to do it multiple times, but it was because I was trying to keep the witch alive. I thought that if she died during the battle she was dead, but I don't think that was the case.

It is possibly the toughest fight in the game given what resources you have available at the time and a real pain in the ass, especially with the long cutscene before it.

The best way to end it is to max your aard sign and spam the beast with it until you get a stun. Once the beast is stunned, it is a one-hit kill same as anything else. On this current playthrough I stunned the beast first time and the battle was over almost before it started (which made me very happy). However, there have been other times where it has taken a long time for the stun to happen. But it does eventually.

DOn't even worry about the barghasts unless they are really climbing all over you. Just keep spamming the Beast with aard. Don't worry about Abigail either, she can't be killed by the Beast or the barghasts at this point.

Aard aard aard aard.

Its a bad fight and a little obnoxious of CDP to put in at that point in the game. But once you get through, you get to the good part of the game, and nothing will ever really by that hard or annoying again.

Edit: Using Blizzard to slow things down helps a lot. You need to take your potions AFTER the battle begins. They wear off if you take them before the cutscene. ALthough the spectre oil will last through the cutscene.

@LostStraw:

A few more things that may be helpful.

If you've developed your skills enough the Group style is great for clearing out large numbers of barghasts if they back you into a corner and are really all over you. Sometimes you wil get hit in the back for hideous damage when doing this but it usually works pretty well.

Developing your endurance and intelligence makes your Aard sign stronger and more useful.

Using Tawny Owl to boost your endurance regeneration is useful.

If your toxicity gets too high use White Honey to clear your system out and take another round of potions.

Don't get into melee combat with the beast until it is stunned. The Beast can inflict Pain which will paralyze you for a few seconds and allow the barghasts to shred you.

Don't run into the wall of fire that the Beast summons! It wil inflict Pain and Incineration.

The key is to run around as neccessary to stay alive whilst spamming the aard sign at the beast. Kill the barghasts when they get in your way or are holding you back but otherwise ignore them. If you are taking Blizzard, it can be tough to tell when the beast is stunned since your vision is all mesed up; you have to pay attention and look for that telltale motionless wobbling as if its legs have all gone numb. WHen taking Blizzard, the signs of stunnign can be easy to miss if you're aren't paying close attention.

I know its a pain in the ass, but my advice is to stick with it. I think the rest of the game is totally worth the aggravation.

Thanks everyone. I made it through :teehee:

Still, I wish it would have auto-saved after the cutscene.

I agree. Or at least given you time to manually save and get ready. This setup seems like one of those weird things that developers sometimes do that seems unneccessaily punitive to the gamer.

Anyway, congrats and enjoy the rest of the game.

I had a lot more trouble with the wyverns in Act 2. They kept respawning.

Has anyone else had a hard time finding a copy? Future Shop and Best Buy in Canada appear to not carry it, and EB keeps saying they should get a shipment in the next couple weeks. I figured since I couldn't find anyone with a copy of Duckman Season 1&2 either, I would just order it online, but the only canadian online store I figured would have both was Amazon.ca, but it doesn't carry The Witcher.

Futureshop pulled it from their shelves back in May, when I went looking for the original version. I ended up finding it at Walmart of all places.

I took this job because I thought you were just a legend. Just a story. A story to scare little kids. But you're the real deal. The demon who dares to challenge God.

So what the hell do you want? Don't seem to me like you're out to make this stinkin' world a better place. Why you gotta kill all my men? Why you gotta kill me?

Nothing personal. It's just revenge.

The wyverns are definitely tough if they come at you in a group of more than 2. WHen that happens I tend to backup and hit them with a few blasts of the ignii sign then mop up with the sword once they've cooked a bit. I also use Golden Oriole since I believe they have a poison attack as well.

The ignii sign, btw, is incredibly useful. Th t killer tree in the swamp Chapter 2 gave me such a hard time the last time I played, but this time I just set fire to it and chopped it down at the same time. Worked beautifully.

I found mine at Gamestop. Which kinda surprised since they have thousands of new and used console titles but carry very few pc title. But they did have this. On the day it was released, too.

Yes, ignii helps alot, especially with that rising moon bronze thingie. At one point in act 2 I was docking enemies for over 100 HPs with one hit.

Anyway, regarding the wyverns, I eventually had to run away while the burning from ignii did its thing, and when I came back one or even two more were there waiting for me. Also, if one them managed to knock me down my health just couldn't two of them, much less three.

The combat is still too easy, and with all the hunting quests it becomes a real grind.

I tried playing the first thingie in the castle and the village. First impressions:

+good voice acting

+good animations

+no eleves, fairies or dragons yet

- combat is rubbish

- long white hair on men is not, nor has it ever been, cool.

- there were mentions of elves, fairies and dragons
