Non lethal takedowns?

Recommended Posts

All joking in the title description aside, I was wondering if anybody read anything about non-lethal takedowns being possible in a preview I may have missed? I can think of several situations where it would be preferable to render someone unconscious rather than killing them. Plus, I would imagine that there are those of us who have a problem with killing certain people (no women or civilians, for example) and would rather just knock them unconscious for the duration of your mission.

Knocking people out in hand-to-hand combat seems very logical, but I've been gaming long enough to discover that "video game logic" can be a completely different animal from what you would expect in real life. So, I would hope the developers code in a way to knock people out in hand-to-hand, of course, rather than just making every blow lethal and leaving it at that. I would also wonder if knocking people out by pistol whipping them or clobbering them with the butt of a rifle would also be possible as well. In addition to melee takedowns, I wonder if there are ways to render someone unconscious at range as well - like, say, a tranquilizer gun?

I'm pretty sure that non-lethal takedowns are a part of the game, as no spy would be able to keep themselves hidden for very long if you left a big pool of blood everywhere you went. Unfortunately, they hadn't decided if we'll be able to drag bodies around the last time the subject came up..

All I can say for sure is that:

"I'll stick with the mini-crossbow, sometimes you've gotta make a silent takedown."

here's hoping for non-leathal takedowns, been way too long since deus ex. heh

You could always check out Metal Gear Solid 2-4 in the meantime :))

bah, Console games don't count. my PS3 is too busy being a really expensive DvD player to play these console games you speak of! heh

No such thing as a guaranteed non-lethal takedown. Especially when you're talking about the weak or infirm (the people you suggested not wanting to kill). By their nature they have unpredictable reactions to most forms of energy, be it physical, electrical, chemical etc.

But if it makes you happy, I'm sure you can imagine a non-lethal phaser or something.

I don't buy into the whole no killing women or civs thing, killing men civ or otherwise equally bothers me, now granted i've played plenty of games and am happy to slaughter when given no other choice - those poor defias, how many of you have I slaughered? - but if I can play through a game by stealthing and or non-leathal elimination I will much prefer it, and infact will ocasionally feel guilty killing when other routes were possible. i'm even open, heck would encourge, temporary non-leathal take downs.

No One Lives Forever 2 was a great example of this, you had a tranq dart for your utility gun that would knock enemies out for something like 20 minutes, but after they awoke they'd run off and sound alarms and what not, which made co-op rather fun and challenging on harder difficulties. Me and my friends would agree to use the tranq - might also have been a tazer - because you had to get through missions faster and with better precision.

It seems to me, as an uneducated observer, that implementing an entire lethal/nonlethal gameplay dichotomy would require a significant additional amount of work: in part for the actual addition of LTL weapons, and also in making that distinction meaningful from a gameplay standpoint. It's something I see as nice, but not essential to the game.

For conscience purposes, you could always just play through using CQC.

Couldn't you just kill them then seek absolution?

Maybe he's a scientologic?

"Alright, I've been thinking. When life gives you lemons, don't make lemonade - make life take the lemons back! Get mad! I don't want your damn lemons, what am I supposed to do with these? Demand to see life's manager. Make life rue the day it thought it could give Cave Johnson lemons. Do you know who I am? I'm the man who's gonna burn your house down! With the lemons. I'm going to to get my engineers to invent a combustible lemon that burns your house down!"

I don't see how it could be too much of a problem if they really wanted to include it. We can reasonably assume that most of the characters we'd be using NLTs on would be ones we'd only see once. This is how Deus Ex handled it. Knocking someone out was functionally the same as killing them from a gameplay standpoint - they were incapacitated and out of the fight. It just elicited a different consequence further down the line. And even Deus Ex had characters that you couldn't knock out - the mech agents and Lebedev all died whether you hit them with tranqs or rockets. Make the big players kill-or-release (or alternatively, just kill) decisions, instead of kill-release-KO.

Maybe, but they've been silent on the issue. Provided the release is still February-ish, it wouldn't surprise me if the game were feature-locked at this point. If they're already doing it, great. Otherwise I think we're out of luck.

Yeah we're allowing optional non-lethal takedowns.

Peace.

O'course, we have to ask...

Will such takedowns be only h2h or will there be tranqs and the like? And will the game respond to you differently if you take the no-kill route?

Are there enemies we have to kill? MGS4, for example, only really had one enemy you had to kill, and the game sort of rewarded you for knocking out the minibosses.

I smell achievements!
