GhostofAnakin Posted July 27, 2008 Posted July 27, 2008 How much do I have to pay to get Josh Sawyer's autograph with my copy of AP? "Console exclusive is such a harsh word." - Darque"Console exclusive is two words Darque." - Nartwak (in response to Darque's observation)

random n00b Posted July 27, 2008 Posted July 27, 2008 I can't help but wonder whether, like the 3-JBs comparison that was very prominent only a few months ago, this emphasis on shag-em-all might be retuned as the PR campaign progresses. It all depends on the kind of feedback of course, but I can quite easily imagine people thinking that it seems rather excessive (even if it is, or isn't, or is wonderful, in-game).It's just another feature. One that tends to become a meme quickly because society is sex-obsessed, simple as that. But from that to think that it's enough of a selling point to warrant focus in the PR campaign... perhaps I'm wrong, but it seems like quite a leap to me. Personally, I wouldn't mind too much, but I am worried about any game that contributes to this kind of sexualisation of the medium. I don't mean in the sense of sex=bad, and I dont' mean that games weren't as sexual as the rest of our culture before... rather I mean the trend where sex and shag-em-all is used as a tool to hype your game, and it works; and for the sake of seemingly valid arguments such as realism and player freedom, it works itself into every RPG. I won't go into a big rant at the moment (yeah, you're so disappointed) but I can't see it being a positive thing."Sexualisation of the medium"? Because you can bed certain NPCs? It's not like the focus of the game is doing them all, I think you're overreacting. There are games whose focus and only theme IS sex, and thanks to digital distribution, anyone can get those anonymously - but still those only enjoy marginal success if at all. Not all films have gradually become porn flicks either, so I think we're safe from a "sexualisation of the medium". The problem is the glass through which this thing is considered. Try to suppress the "ZOMG SEKS!" knee-jerk response, and suddenly the whole debate seems much much sillier.
sogi_ya Posted July 27, 2008 Posted July 27, 2008 what about crying after getting kicked in the nuts? i uasually cry when that happens ..... but the last time that happend i was allso drunk and it was a buddy of mine that did it so i was actually crying and laughing .... i dont really know why i was laughing but i was. grrrrrr, why do i keep spelling "and" as "nad", or "driven" as "drivven". damn you lexdixa, damn you to hell
themadhatter114 Posted July 27, 2008 Posted July 27, 2008 Sacrilege. Blashphemy. I can;t think of anything strong enough to describe how singularly wrong this is. It's the truth. That is totally sweat pouring off his forehead after a long day of killing.

Well, hopefully there aren't any ridiculous scenes of Thorton getting kicked in the nuts, though. Or scenes of him watching Dumbo.

Xard Posted July 27, 2008 Posted July 27, 2008 oooooooooooohhh... J.E. Sawyer Posted July 27, 2008 Posted July 27, 2008 oooooooooooohhh... Well, since you love Ninja Gaiden and similar stuff you certainly have idea how to build great CQC system It's actually pretty difficult to incorporate hand-to-hand combat into a game with combat that focuses primarily on modern gunplay. The system needs to be simple enough to use and very effective when applied -- otherwise there's not much point to having it there and most players simply won't invest in it/use it. We tried a few different basic systems and martial arts styles before settling on something we thought fundamentally "felt good". And that's very important for a melee combat system: it's more important to get the feel right first, then tune as needed for things like advancement systems and other elements of gameplay. twitter tyme
Tigranes Posted July 27, 2008 Posted July 27, 2008 "Sexualisation of the medium"? Because you can bed certain NPCs? It's not like the focus of the game is doing them all, I think you're overreacting. Oh, definitely. It's a bad term. As I said, I don't quite mean that... but thats not your fault. I'll leave it until I can describe it in less confusing terms. And that's very important for a melee combat system: it's more important to get the feel right first, then tune as needed for things like advancement systems and other elements of gameplay. And since that already presumes we have a primary focus on modern gunplay, yep, sounds fine. I do wish we had a bigger focus on not necessarily melee, but acrobatics. Like, I would hope that Thorton has more than just your 'stock' animations, but more variations on things like rolling, jumping over railings - and opening doors quickly as opposed to your standard CRPG "animation comes to a halt as you stand still, the door opens as you raise one arm roughly to the area of the knob". I'm not really anticipating having Thorton go toe to toe against guys with guns. However, if we have some good stealth kill mechanics, I think I'll love that, and would totally invest in close-quarter skills to upgrade it. Are we going to be able to slit throats? Grab people from behind and interrogate them, and then slit their throats? What about the option to knock people out (so that we don't upset various factions too much) and hiding their bodies? One thing I did like about Splinter Cell: Double Agent, was that you'd get conflicting orders from Lambert and from Emil, with Lambert telling you to keep it clean, and Emil saying to leave no witnesses alive, with your choice affecting your trust meter. It will be great if we can have like a stealth/CQC guy that plays differently than the stealth/hacker/locksmith. I think perhaps I want too much for Thorton to even more badass than Sam Fisher, who could probably kill any of the JBs without being detected. Hopefully Thorton's love life turns out better.
mkreku Posted July 28, 2008 Posted July 28, 2008 It's not like the focus of the game is doing them all... Don't try to tell ME how I'm going to play my game! I will bag them all Swedes, go to: Spel2, for the latest game reviews in swedish!
H Posted July 28, 2008 Posted July 28, 2008 I think perhaps I want too much for Thorton to even more badass than Sam Fisher, who could probably kill any of the JBs without being detected. Pah! My Garrett would easily knock your Fisher out, rob him blind and drop a wonderfully cynical one-liner after doing so.

Brannart Posted August 12, 2008 Posted August 12, 2008 How quickly we forget. The previews for Planescape Torment made it sound like TNO was a sex machine and was going to have two women fighting for the right to get inside his immortal pants. Yet the game was nothing even remotely like that. I would not worry about it.
Brannart Posted August 12, 2008 Posted August 12, 2008 Never played it. What's the relevance? As a male or female character, you can sleep with a ton of different people. You can also get married (including same-sex) and later pimp your spouse out as a prostitute. Odd I remember making a female character determined to sleep with every dude between Vault 15 and Arroyo and yet I found it puzzlingly difficult to find shaggable men. Most of them just wanted to kill me. Is that anyway to treat a lady?
Xard Posted August 14, 2008 Posted August 14, 2008 I just realized what kind of huge dangers can affect Thorton due to his behaviour. I say we must get some proper traits if he chace these women in AP. And like in Fallout they should have negative effects too (preferrably placed on general outlines of my link) C&C baby How can it be a no ob build. It has PROVEN effective. Xard Posted August 14, 2008 Posted August 14, 2008 more dreadful: due to vast Communist conspiracy (which is nowadays carried out by China isntead of deceased USSR) quality of precious bodily fluids of average american agent has been steadily decreasing for decades. This means each time Thorton has sexual encounter with woman he has 45-75 % chance off permanently losing some of his physical attributes and sexual frustration too which can be piled up up to point it emerges as special negative perk that enforces Thorton to go through psychopathology. This in turn can only be funded by doing various difficult missions for the questionable underground psychiatrist. Imagine the choices and consequences! Either you get all the use from the women and get this severe thread OR you get nothing which is relatively harder AND safer option. Then we could tie in mission where you infiltrate Chinese Communist Poison factory in hope of finding cure! How can it be a no ob build. It has PROVEN effective. RPGmasterBoo Posted August 29, 2009 Posted August 29, 2009 (edited) Finally after years of senseless slaughter of everything from headcrabs to mutant zombie nazis I get some tit.s in a game. The US game industry is progressing! Its been a long wait but its been worth it Maybe we can get a Geralt cameo while we're at it, and SIE gets to pick one of them. Geralt wins. Flawless victory. Nepenthe Posted August 30, 2009 Posted August 30, 2009 IMO this crossed the fine line between thread necromancy and thread necrophilia. You're a cheery wee bugger, Nep. Have I ever said that? Reapercussions
Fearless_Jedi Posted August 31, 2009 Posted August 31, 2009 (edited) After reading the article from the OP's link, I have to say that I would love to download the cut lines later on as DLC. I'd imagine that after I beat the game the first time it would be quite comical to hear these extra lines during my second playthrough. It could be like a "gag reel" dlc. The scene where MT is crying sounds hilarious. Edited August 31, 2009 by Fearless_Jedi "Some people are always trying to iceskate uphill." Blade(Wesley Snipes) from the movie Blade.
