What are you playing now?

I picked up Dead Rising and Lost Planet for the 360 last week since they were at a decent price.

DR is self-explanatory fun. Mall. Zombies. Use lawnmowers, skateboards, bowling balls, toy lightsabers, katanas, shopping carts, parasols, other shoppers, etc, to deliver hilarious damage upon unsuspecting zombies. People complain about timed quests and how you can't do everything in one, but I found that it added to the 'survivor' experience. Always being on a deadline helped the sense of urgency quite a bit. Trying to get back to a certain location within a certain amount of time while also escorting other shoppers to safety (which, if needed be, I would dump and let zombies feast on - "awww"), while also stopping by shops to peruse new clothes or accessories provide for some really fun quests. Boss fights were hit and miss. Some of them were awesome, with you running around looking for new weapons or food/health, while others were just cheap - the latter has to do with how ranged weapons/guns weren't that well implemented. All around, great game, though I'm not done yet.

LP is also tons of fun. I can see why some of the reviews would have been less favorable, but I don't see those points as negatives. If you time it incorrectly, you can get knocked down by a rocket, then get pummeled repetitively until you die, without a chance of standing up. The game (boss fights) can be pretty unforgiving on hard difficulty, but that's precisely what I love about it. I'm at mission 4 right now, and the boss I'm stuck at I've attempted to beat over 20 times now. I like a good challenge, when solving doesn't just require cheap tactics or grinding, and this game doesn't really allow you either. The boss fights are freaking bloody epic. Games are too forgiving nowadays. The thermal energy is a cool concept too, since it gives you a sense of urgency as you try to defeat your enemies before it runs out. This makes boss fights all the more tense. If anything, the boss battles MAKE this game. I can't disrecommend it except to wuss gamers.

Otherwise, I've been my way through Halo coop on Legendary still. Nearing the end. I'm just planning/hoping to finish it and Halo 2 before 3 comes out (4p online coop, mwahahahahahahhaha).

Playing a lot more Condemned. As I get used to it, I'm getting braver. Thankfully Monolith doesn't go overboard with horror. 9/10 the enemies will come from in front of you. If they don't, it's because they flanked around. The other time, you have a chance of hearing them. What this means is that if I stick to the outside of the room and maintain view of the center->forward, I can see most enemies that might approach. And I have to watch the occasional pillar for a guy hiding behind that.

It's pretty scary. There's some freaky moments in the game, and it's the fear factor is upped by the fact that you are usually having to use melee weapons over guns. I can't quantify the fear for you other than to say that it scares me a bit.

Note that I'm a pansy in scary games.

Out of interest, Tale, how scary was FEAR to you? Mind, if you have played it.

I've played FEAR. Monolith is either my second favorite game developer after Valve or my first favorite tied with Valve. I loved FEAR as an action game. It was not scary until the final part of the game. For that game Monolith made a point, and they say so on the developer commentary with the collector's edition, to let you know about enemies ahead of time so that you can choose how you want to approach an encounter. That and the slo-mo (even if surprised you can turn on slo-mo to get the edge back) eliminated any element of scary in the game. So, I find it ironic the game is titled FEAR.

As an example of all of this, prior to the very end of the game, the scariest enemy in the game were the invisible guys. However, you could hear their cloaking clearly, they'd break glass to get to you, and if you turned on slo-mo they were very easy to see. I usually ended up just meleeing them with my gun.

I'm in about halfway through(Armacham Research Division, after the turrets) and so far it has been the worst horror and best fps action game ever. Granted, the emergent action is rather repetitive, but FEAR is about the only game I've seen with this much enemy-enviroment interaction, adaptivity and just killer intensity. Also, kicks.

I've played through maybe 4 times. I like to find new ways to slaughter whole groups of clone soldiers before they even notice I'm there.

Horror games are difficult for me to play. FEAR is quite easy. In a horror game, I get very stressed out and the game does nothing to relieve that stress. I know I'm scared when I'm quicksaving everytime I cross a room. Condemned has me doing that occasionally.

Anachronox, Fallout and Fable. I've neglected Fable. Way back when, I went and got Molyneuxed, Peter can spiel like a one-man hype machine. I expected a dense RPG goliath only to receive a consoled husk. Months pass and, having picked up TLC, I realize how unfair an appraisal that was. Now de-expectationed I'm free to enjoy Fable for what it is, a Zelda-style action RPG. I'm having a blast.

I'm playing Icewind Dale and Romance of the Three Kingdoms 11.

Icewind Dale I play on my laptop and Three Kingdoms on my Desktop.

Icewind Dale, my party is a Fighter, Paladin, Druid, Cleric, Mage and Thief/Mage. I forgot how fun the battles are in this game. The best one I had so far was in Dragon's Eye level 5. There is a room filled with Yuan-ti archers and lesser yuan-ti melee monsters. The enemy layout is such that the melee yuan-ti close with your fighters while the archers pepper you with arrows. Very annoying but fun. I'm in the Elven Fortress now, fighting through the spirit monsters. Cleric is very helpful here.

Three Kingdoms. I'm playing as Liu Bei. Things have progressed to the point where I have conquered the southern regions and Cao Cao (Pronounced more like Sow Sow than Cow Cow...I wonder why they just didn't spell it Tsao Tsao or something) has control of the northern region. Things are at a stalemate at the moment as we each have 100,000 troops at each of the cities along the border. My plan is to land a massive army behind his lines and generally cause chaos while my best generals lead a singular strike into his western territories.

I really hope Koei starts to innovate more (Looking at the new Dynasty Warriors 6 vid it looks like they won't beyond incremental cosmetic and gameplay changes.) As a big fan of the Three Kingdoms period of China, I would love to see a strategy game more like the Total War series (as far was the battles go) or an RPG/Strategy hybrid that takes a character all the way through that semi-legend time of history.

But Koei seems content to re-hash the same thing over and over to bad rock music (at least in the Dynasty Warriors series).

I had almost the exact same experience with Fable. I got it just after I'd played Gothic 2 (one of my top five games of all time) and I was expecting another third person free-roaming RPG.. and I got those wood corridors and tiny villages. I didn't even play for an hours, I think. But just a few months ago I picked it up again and played through it all from beginning to end and I actually enjoyed the game a lot. Weird how perceptions change depending on what you've played prior to the game in question..

It's difficult being a reviewer.

I had similar experience with Fable. I wasn't expecting a more traditional RPG, but I was dissapointed with how shallow it seemed. I never really got over it, but my issues with it were never so bad that I couldn't play it. I did play all the way through the original campaign, but couldn't bother myself to play the lost levels portion.

I'm still playing Overlord in a 100% curruption run, and loving it. There are too many damn glitches in the game though (I'm playing the Xbox 360 version), and unlike the PC version, the 360 one is still unpatched.

I'm getting tired of hearing Gnarl tell me that "Velvet isn't a lady to be kept waiting." Stupid minion! Did you not feel the tower a' rockin'!? I've already taken care of business, you ugly little bastard!

You can also try killing Gnarl. If you target him and just keep whacking away I think you can kill him just like the jester. They aren't invincible, but the do have about a million health each...

I'm trying to get my friend to buy Overlord. Because my comp can't handle it. So far, not a plenty of success. I'm supposed to get a killer laptop come September, but I'm itching to play the thing now.

I also just finished Max Payne 2. I'm divided on the game, but I'll play it a bit more before saying anything. I must admit that it's one thing, it's definetly not Max Payne 1.

You can kill the jester? Ha! That's great. I'd never bothered wailing on him long enough to find out. I always stopped at "I hurt, I huuuuuurt!" It's cool to know it can be done, at least.
