Aliens is one of the few movies I've watched a half-dozen times over the years. Something about it was extremely compelling, especially when I was a teenager.

There's a few things that were great about the series. The camradarie of the military group. The tension between corporate and human interests. The mystery of the unknown. The heroics of a few. Sacrifice.

To make a full-length RPG is challenging. I like the ideas from the first movie, a ship's captain trying to make it in a universe governed by Corporations. You could take the Firefly route, with the players flying cargo from place to place, coming into conflict with both the military and various corporations.

Best of luck, gentlemen.

While Aliens crpg is great idea, I kinda feel sorry for Art Director and Lead Artist. H. R. Giger ain't easiest one to get compared to. NWN2 left a lot to be improved in art and modeling department.

Universum of Aliens is relatively interesting so world aspect should be ok. Storyline potential and writing should be good too, based on developers comments on this board. I wish 'em the best with the project.

My misadventures on youtube.

So are you going by the movies or the comics/books?

Well, we're not making an AvP game, so the Yautja aren't part of "our" universe for practical purposes.

Hooray :p just what I wanted to hear.

I think the game is in the right hands.

I second that. But keep in mind how long this has been kept under wraps, Mr. Sawyer could have done some needed reading in that time. He might have just found that out (not that being a fan of something you develop is needed to make a good game, it just helps)

I'm pretty sure the only things that Fox considers incontrovertible are the films. Anything else is "take it or leave it" as far as I know. Unless it consists of alien soldiers wearing USCMC helmets, carrying smartguns, and smoking cigars -- in which case it's probably just "leave it".

So does that mean that the game will have to take place post-Resurrection? Nothing wrong with that, necessarily (although the inclusion of space pirates in canon seems a little odd) but a game that takes place between or before the films would work just as well.

But you're using the canon (*shudder*) from the graphic novels, then?

I'm not sure if this is one of those questions you can't answer yet but how will you approach the story? Will you mostly use the Alien story elements (A few brave souls against one superior predator) or will Aliens (Survive the endless onslaught) be the one which you use the most material and general feel from?

The wikipedia article on "xenomorphs" mentions: RoleMaster "Aliens the Roleplaying Game".

I've never heard of it but will Obsidian's game have any connection with this?

My guess is just that J.E. will handle the rules, game mechanics and dealing with the team while maybe MCA and comrades will handle the story and characters. Just like in NWN2.

Just to confirm, the game's slated to be M18+ for ESRB?

There's really no other way to have it, unless they're planning on having Alien birth off-screen, which would be pretty nutty for a serious Alien game.

There's another thing they could do: The PC wakes up and has been implanted (I don't know what term they use) with an alien in his chest. Then you have a Fallout-y type situation in which it's a race against time before the PC dies a horrible, gruesome death. Once the Alien inside the PC has been dealt with, then the second part of the game begins. Or that would work as the ultimate "Oh ****" plot twist, because by the time the infection is revealed a significant amount of time has passed.

Actually, that could be implemented a number of ways.

The comics of Alien, Aliens and Alien 3 are also Canon. Earth Wars [comes after aliens in the comics timeline] is not canon, because Alien 3 directly contradicts it and fox ruled those out of the 'canon' timeline.

Still, earth wars is MUCH better than Alien 3 in terms of story and timeline.

Boss: You're fired.

Me: Ummm will you let me have my job if I dance for you?

Boss: No, I don't think so-

Me: JUST LET ME DANCE

Oh, just to confirm, Gearbox is indeed making the Alien FPS. Due for '09, tentatively.

This is probably a stupid question, but are Gearbox and Obsidian going to be involved with each other on this in any way?

That's great news, Gearbox is a good studio and as long as they at least retain a semblance of space in their level design, like AVP 2 had, the game's really going to shine.

As for the involvement, yeah it is a stupid question. We'll just wait for news.

Will there be any point in the game were the player learns or uncovers information about the Space Jockeys. These are the most unkown creatures in the Aliens universe. There has been many theories about them and there link to the Aliens. The most common theory is that the Space Jockeys created the Aliens as weapons. This is why all the eggs were found in the Space Jockey ship in Alien.

It would be a nice idea to let the player uncover info about them, even if its only small amounts to let the player come up with there own theory on were they came from. Or create a theory of your own for the game.

Wow. This will definitely be interesting. I'll be getting it if my compy can run it - don't have the budget to upgrade or get a new one. Really looking forward to seeing how it all turns out.

All I can ask for is lots and lots of dialogue. I really enjoy the writing that Obsidian does, and the more they include then the better!

Tentative release date - 2009. SO if you start saving up now, you could probably buy able to buy the necessary upgrades... probably.

Sweeeeet. As a person who's fandom of all things Alien (save the AvP movie) is actually fairly unreasonable in nature (to the tune of watching the Alien Resurrection trailer every single morning waiting for that movie's release), I'm just a tad bit excited by these announcements.

It's too bad Giger won't be consulted. I am sure he would love to participate.

The guy can design a tarot deck like nobody's business. But some of his earlier Alien designs were a little too... overtly sexual. Especially the facehugger. But the later designs were more horrific than strange. I prefer them much more. Giger is an odd genius.

And who's to say that whoever's doing the art design (perhaps somebody from this forum, eh eh?) wouldn't consult the dude? If I were to make an Alien game, I'd seek him out if I could. Him or whoever did the design for Aliens (I believe it was a different guy working off of Giger's concept, but I'm not totally sure)

Yesterday Trent Campbell and I went to visit ADI, a visual effects studio that was heavily involved with the production of Alien3, Alien: Resurrection, and AvP. We snapped some kewl pics in their display room. Click for LARGO versions. Special thanks to Tom Woodruff and Alec Gillis at ADI for the tour and permission to post these suckaz online.

Does ADI also provide you with material you can draw from? Like artworks, sculptures and other stuff that wasn't used in the movies but may be used through 20th Fox for the Alien RPG?

Fantastic pics :)
