Alas, that's exactly the greatest problem a developer faces when working on a MMORPG. It's virtually impossible to allow the player to have a lasting impact in a multiplayer setting based on an open, persistent world.

 

At present, most MMORPGs cannot allow any real interaction, and thus, they truly have no real gaming value if stripped of the multiplayer appeal.

 

Folks who join those games with the pretense they can simply ignore the multiplayer aspect are going to inesorably fall into disappointment.

No, I 'dn't thin's im`possible. From what I read, that seems to happen troutinely in EVE Online. Even if it ionvolves a lot of metagaming, a dynamic world that changes in accordance to players' actions is possible. So I guess it's juts a matter of time until devs leanr to make world sless staticm, and more dependant on players' actions.

 

Pirates of the Burning Sea by Flying Lab has something cool that fulfills this desire.

From what I read, that seems to happen troutinely in EVE Online.

You know, the only thing that routinely happens in EVE Online is mining. Looking for an ass rollicking space adventure? Mine. Short on cash and need to raise funds? Mine. Got your friends together and want to plunder some space booty? Mine.

Ya, okay. But there was a thread here some time ago that shown that OOC cyber had had some impressive results on the internal economics of the game.

PvP-Conquerable World

The Caribbean of 1720 is home to many dozens of ports belonging to the three great powers: Britain, France, and Spain. Each port is a valuable source of goods, equipment, and mission patrons. Players use PvE missions to destabilize a port, making it eligible for conquest by their nation. With enough players doing enough missions, the conquest mode begins and the ocean for many leagues around the port becomes an open PvP environment. This unlocks new PvE missions to smuggle in supplies, destroy fortifications, and tilt the odds in your favor. Scheduled PvP battles culminate in a final conflict to either save the port or conquer it.

 

Every day, each nation receives victory points on the basis of its port holdings. The first nation to reach the goal is declared the victor, and celebrations and awards ensue. Then treaties are signed, ports revert to their original sides, and a new round of conflict begins.

Sounds like an online version of Sid Meires' Pirates!, only without the annoying dancing minigames.

It's been a while since I played Eve but I don't think the world really changes. There's some factional policking via the guilds (corporations) but I don't think that counts much more than capturing some territory in DAoC or Shadowbane.

Well, okay. Since I haven't actually played EVE Online, I'll take your word fori .t. But I thought players could take out entire AI factions, right? Granted, I don't know the extent to which that might affect gameplay, but it seems to be a good design implement.

 

lol, I don't know whty the hell Im defending EVE, seeing how a few mnotsh ago I got into a flame war about it being a nest of metagamers an stuf..

Hades is now out of some money after buy DDO, even though he wasrned that it would not suite him.  :)

 

It might not suit me but I was going to give it a try. At some point I need to expand my game playing horizons.

I don't think that an rpg would work so well, but the world map mmo concept sounds interesting.

I don't think that an rpg would work so well, but the world map mmo concept migth work.

 

RPG would work, but main char should be a civilian at begin, or some low ranking soldier.

 

Best timeframe would be the Tiberian Dawn era for it.

Thats similiar to how Dynasty Warriors 5X works.

 

Commanding your troops while fighting at the same time though pretty tricky. See Battalion Wars (GC). Although without the body hopping (since you would have to manually access vehicles).

I have to agree with Volourn.  Bioware is pretty much dead now.  Deals like this kills development studios.

Merceneries is another one. Although I wouldnt call it an RPG since your character is basically as good as you are.
