I just played Scrabble for perhaps the first time couple of weeks ago with an experienced player. Got my a$$ handed to me but it was a fun one shot deal.

Chess, Xiangqi, Monopoly and Risk are all examples of boardgames. Its almost always played on a flat surface(a board) that is printed to mark where players can move their pieces etc.

WH40k is a big money sink.

 

I picked up one of their cheaper fig games, I think it was Necronomicon when it was on clearance. GW had decided to cancel the game, but sales increased so much when it went clearance that the game got picked up again.

 

In that game you had small gangs instead of much large forces, and you could even get cheap plastic figs.

 

The game was quite fun. You had character sheets, and your gang members had unique stats, and they gained experience. And even then I was dumping quite a bit of money into a clearance game that required very few figs.

You talking about Necromunda? The Hivecity gang fight game? Me and my friends used to play that one as well as WH40k, it adopted almost cult like status, damn I had a stack of those old character sheets up until recently. All gone now though. :">

An example of how ridiculously overpriced WH40K figures are: A bootlegger with a hand figurine caster (they look like a big garlic press), a Bunsen burner and some lead blanks can undercut Games Workshop's prices and still make a profit selling copies of figures. You'd think GW's economics of scale could beat that, but no.

Yes...classical ones like chess (not very well...), RISK (love it), Scrabble, Monopoly, Go/Pente.

 

I don't play them much anymore because not many of our friends play them...plus after 20 years anything gets old.

 

I remember a period of trying to find new board games to try, and it was rather abysmal during that time....everything was a knock-off of Trivial Pursuit, which I couldn't stand, and made of really cheap materials to boot - like how RISK went from wood squares to ugly plastic pieces - I did notice they put out a set with the wood pieces again, but they still aren't the same. heh

 

Board games for a while became more about yakky-social and not the game, if you know what I mean...I didn't like that.

 

Haven't looked at or paid attention to the board game type market in a few years, tho.

I love it, but I also know it's an acquired taste. It definitely helps if you are also into miniature collecting and painting as that is a large part of the hobby.

It's a money sinkhole, but it's got good fiction behind it (not the books the games "storyline" that they set up to explain everything...)

Necromunda! That's it! I love tactical combat, so figs are great. But GW games are a big money sink in general.

Indeed they are, I lost all my childhood cash to this hobby. There ought to be a warning sign on the boxsets, you know, somewhat like those on a pack of smokes. (dunno if you have that in the US, but here it says "Smoking kills!" with capital letters and stuff) :D

Someone needs to come out with an online Necromunda multiplayer game, or type game.

 

They could charge $10 a month and people would play, as it would be less expensive than buying and painting figs.

I often play a huge Mother of a Boardgame called EuroFront. It's a WW2 block game that actually comprises five smaller games (that are quite big in their own right) called EastFront, WestFront, VolgaFront, MedFront and the Spanish Civil War (which actually is a part of the MedFront package). Loads of fun to be had!
