Im asking this queston because Im studying game design(with a specialty in art&graphics) and some parts of the program focuses on the design of boardgames of different kinds, not PnP RPGs though.

Im negative to this because A) the market for new games is virtually nonexistant B) boardgames never tell a story like a computer game can

So I wanted to check with some "common people" and see what your habits are. Important : If you play a computerized variant of a boardgame it doesnt count.

Note:

some computer games can of course be done "analog" to try game mechanics in the pre-production phase, and there the boardgame concept can be useful.

Axis & Allies and Risk 2010 mainly. Not above Stratego or Monopoly.

I play mostly Connect 4 and Cluedo Extreme. But also an old Sherlock Holmes board game called 221B Baker Street: The Master Detective Game. 'Tis a truly enjoyable game, my dear Watson. :o

Hawk! Eggplant! AWAKEN!

does chess count?

I'm not sure if tabletop wargames count, if so, I used to play Warhammer and Necromunda.

Apart from that, the only two board games I used to play were some old Avalon Hill stuff, one called "Wooden Ships & Iron Men" from the age of sail and one called "Flat Top" which covered the Pacific war in WWII. It has been quite a few years since playing though, mostly due to a lack of opponents :o

I played a bit of Hero's Quest in my younger days, its not something that I'm proud of, but I made my peace

People laugh when I say that I think a jellyfish is one of the most beautiful things in the world. What they don't understand is, I mean a jellyfish with long, blond hair.

Risk! :o

Not sure if it counts, or not, but I play Battletech every now and then. I've given up my battleship program and I'm now working on creating a computerized version of the tabletop battletech.

Beyond that I play risk whenever I can get enough people together to play. I suppose the Diplomacy play by e-mail doesn't count now does it? :o"

Scrabble, Monopoly, and chess if it counts.

I've played many board games over the years. Avalon Hills Civilization is still a favorite. One of my friends from school plays a lot of board games such as stratego, risk, clue, etc. It's funny, but she's a gamer's dream. Young, pretty, and she loves games of all sorts. I draw the line at that dance revolution non-sense. So, there are at least two of us who play both board games and computer games.

Ok, whats with Clue being called Cluedo outside of North America?

The area between the balls and the butt is a hotbed of terrorist activity.

I watch the Clue movie from time to time, but that's about it.

Occasionally some Scrabble. Interestingly, it was through Scrabble that I first learned the word '****' at the tender age of 12; my friend's older sister and her friend were playing with us, and we challenged the word when the sister's friend put it down, and we had to go look it up in the dictionary.

Oh, come on. They censor ****? The word, by the way, can be defined as 'battery-operated boyfriend.'

"Doom 3 - The boardgame"?

WTF?

- When he is best, he is a little worse than a man, and when he is worst, he is little better than a beast.

This actually made me laugh.

Does playing Diplomacy over the internet count?

Yes. Chess. Go. Shogi. Chinese Chess - actual chess. Monopoly. Risk. Various wargames. And others.

But not as often as I would like.

Board games are wonderful. There is all that tactual stuff about rolling dice and moving pieces. I love it! And talking with real people at the same time. Wonderful!

Yeah, board games are all about the tactual stuff!

I disagree.

Settlers of Cataan is so popular as a newer board game, that a licensed online computer version was made, that you have to pay every month to play. Several spin-offs and add-ons have also been developed like Seafarers of Cataan.

Warcraft the Boardgame, Civilization the Boardgame and others spring to mind.

I really like Civ, Cranium, and the classic Talisman but good luck finding a copy. A beatup copy of Talisman will still cost you $100 on EBay.

Risk, Axis and Allies (tho I stopped because of the set up required) and, Axis and Allies Normandy invasion.

Normandy invasion is good because the amount of pieces on the board is reduced and the set up time is shrunk by a massive amount

Victor of the 5 year fan fic competition!

Kevin Butler will awesome your face off.

I prefer the Avalon Hills Civilization game to the new Sid Meir's Civilization board game. Avalon Hills Civilization is just awesome. Takes at the very least three players, better with six or seven, and takes forever to play. ...But it's worth it.

I used to play monopoly weekly and chess almost daily. That was before all my friends, family and relatives split apart to move on with their lives (college, job offers, etc...)

The only board game I still play is scrabble with my uncle.

Heroquest was my favorite boardgame of all time. It has been well over a decade since I last played it. Played Heroquest right before making the move to fantasy RPGs.

Great game.

I used to play a lot of chess as well when I was younger. But other than sporadic one shots here and there I am not an avid boardgamer.

I have long since sold my soul to RPGs
