Moving to Europe?

Are you leaving Oz, what about your citizenship

There are plenty of jobs in Melbourne but I donā€™t want to live there (yes, Iā€™m picky like that). I'm getting into painting Warhammer figures. And by "getting into" I mean I started up a month ago, realized I needed more supplies, got sick, and am now in a position where I can finally paint again.

Why is coloring plastic so inticing?

Said goodbye to my 19 year old stove. The new one feels so cheaply made I think we should have just fixed the old one.

Which type? Induction, gas, Electric?

Electric, regular old coil burners too. Management here dislikes glass tops, and I think our cast iron pots would probably break the glass top.Ā  The old one was having weird oven issues, set to 350 F but it only reached 300 F or so.Ā  And one burner was out of commission as well.Ā Ā

Just how it goes I guess, maybe I just assume "heavier = more robust".Ā  Definitely displeased with the EnerGuide rating being higher, had hoped for efficiency gains - wasn't involved in picking the model

Uf, over here those classic style, ie. no glass, are exclusively the cheapest models. Did she ever try induction? It's very efficient and very fast and very controllable. The only downside is that some of the cheaper ones turn off as soon as you lift the pans, and you need pots that work with induction.

Yah, needing new pots is the issue with those and cost.Ā  Even the oven drawer in this one is flimsy sheet metal, sheesh.Ā  One of the marketing points on this was "Made in USA", pfft.

Much the same here with "made in Germany", doesn't mean much these days.

New stove appears to hit the set temperatutres.Ā  Isn't level though, so that's another thing I need to do.Ā  The beep when it's hit the set temperature is some feeble two tone as opposed to the mighty beep of our old one.Ā  Ah well, things only get worse, I suppose.

This house came with a glass top electric stove. I dislike it. It works fine, but the "this is the burner area design lines" on the glass is easily scratched and if your pot/pan isn't perfectly perfectly flat, it will wobble at the lightest handle touch and slide all over the surface so I have to keep readjusting where it's sitting. If you spill anything, it burns into black glue onto the glass surface and oven cleaner may be needed to remove it (vs. those pan things under a burner you can just replace). Can't complain tho, it was "free" (minus the cost of the house, ahem).

I'm still miffed that the fridge (also "free" with the house) has two giant double doors that are apparently made of aluminum or something, meaning magnets will not stick to it. Only a little strip of the side of the fridge - because the fridge is housed within a kitchen cabinet-hole - can hold magnet-notes. Boo.

Edit: my mistake, it's not the lines on the stovetop that etch, it's the glass itself. So you get unpolished look scuffs all over.

What do you clean it with? There are special cleaning solution for it, and you shouldn't use anything abrasive to scrub it with. For any spills, plastic included (ask me how I know), you use a glass top scraper to scrape it off. (just make sure to use it under a sharp angle and change the razors when damaged) You should also raise pot/pans when shaking them instead of sliding them on the glass.

If the damage is already done, you can just use a polishing compound and remove most of the scratches.

Miele has a cool design on its induction tops where there are little raised white bumps in the cooking zones, these prevent scratches from pots and pans. (They also offer a "diamond" finish, but I don't know how good that is)

I use water sitting on the surface for while, maybe 409 or windex after, paper towels or sponge or the "nonstick scrubber" plastic side sponges. I've used the Easy-Off type oven spray oven cleaner to remove the black glue.

I have never shaken/shake-slide a pan because I cook nothing that requires it (also, full pans are rather heavy for me these days). I use a wooden spoon to stir/move pan contents around and like I said, if the pan bottom is not perfectly flat/has become a bit warped, this action alone will cause the pan to "walk" across the surface eventually so it's no longer centered over the burner coils and then I pick it up and move it again. Over and over. I did recently buy a new "wok" type pan and it's flat/more stable. Most (cheaper) pans also have all that texturing on the underside/outside bottom for some reason - machined circle lines and logos, whatever.

The surface was already damaged but it's grown worse since we took over, possibly due to my wobbly pans (that didn't feel wobbly on coil burners, cause you don't notice as much I guess). I can't be bothered to take a pic of my actual stovetop but this picture from reddit shows what I mean. I see videos of "do these many steps to clean or polish" and frankly I can't be bothered. It annoys me because exposed coil burners I didn't have to think/notice about such at all - but it doesn't annoy me enough and I don't care enough to fiddle with powders, polishes, razor blades or multi-steps. It is what it is. šŸ˜›Ā  Edit: to be clear, ours is not induction. Just glass over burner coils.

The last couple of posts made me go over to my parents and check their Miele induction glasstop stove. Not a single scratch on the surface, no scuffed look - and my mother suffers from Parkinson's disease, so the pans and pots move a little more than they probably should. That definitely works, but they also cost an arm and a leg. :p

^ Cost is one part of the "can't be bothered" aspect - not in the sense of cleaning but in the sense of wanting super fancy cookware or appliances, which often come with more care and consideration to deal with. I like no fuss and I don't spend enough time cooking to care. Edit: and cheap-ish. For that matter, we've only bought/purchased two new large appliances in our 35+ years together, and one was only because we kind of had to to rent the other house. Did buy an ancient used fridge once, too.

I think at this point in my life my rangetop preference would go like this:

Gas > exposed coil > glass covered coil

Ovens I like electric/convection, anything but gas, basically.

This is one of the things I dislike about my air fryer. The "preheated" and "turn food" tone is so low I literally cant hear it unless Im standing there babysitting the damn thing. So now I just set the microwave timer.

I don't know if they have their oven too, but sliding the grill or pans out of the tracks makes an ungodly screeching sound. Also their dishwasher rusts my stainless steel... They are trying to convince me it's the chemicals I use (finish), the same I used in my previous Bosch one without any issues. If they try to convince me to use their tablets I am going to chuck it out the window...

I live in California, hence those are probably illegal, like wood burning fireplaces.Ā  šŸ˜›

...or at least, illegal to burn actual wood logs in - of course, they'd have to catch you/someone would have to report you. I'm sure such doesn't get enforced a lot. But in terms of permits to put one in a house now - not likely/full of restrictions etc.

Edit: As always - if I was really into cooking I might want certain appliances. But I'm not, so I'd rather spend 5k-10k on ... computers/games/TV's etc. Priorities!

That's California for you. Wood smoke has too many larger particulates. Or something.
If you buy a house here with a nice original wood burning fireplace still in existence, never ever do any renov. that would tear it down. You'd probably only get a permit for a gas-insert type thing. Not that I'm a building contractor. Just what I've read here and there. May even still vary county to county for all I know.

I used to paint miniatures and got decent at it. It usually took an evening to paint a figure to good effect. I tried painting the plastic Warhammer ones but they felt so lightweight it seemed like wasted effort. These days I enjoy 3D modelling; I just finished an altar and a mantlet.
