A Clockwork Orange (1971). Well, I put off watching it for a very long time, but I finally did. It is a marvellously constructed film, with the way all of it thematically loops back in on itself to tie everything together so perfectly. Thanks to that, it goes from being a film I probably should've rightfully hated (if it were handled by a lesser filmmaker) to a film that I did end up enjoying, which I did not expect.

I think Kubrick is undoubtedly a master of his craft, but I do have to say I would not have guessed that you would like A Clockwork Orange. If you end up enjoying Eyes Wide Shut then I will eat a whole rotisserie chicken.

I could have done with a little less of the nadsat slang that almost certainly worked better in the book that I did not read (yet?), but otherwise, indeed, Kubrick certainly knew his craft, even though by some accounts (like Jack Nicholson) he was a pain in the neck to work with.

I am kind of a Admiral Tolwyn/His Divine Shadow fanboy, so that always helps.

He reduced Scatman Crothers to tears by making him do close to 150 takes in The Shining, so pain in the neck may be an understatement.

Oh, see, I was of the complete opposite bent. Going into it, I didn't know it was going to be so ludicrously British, or in fact even British at all, and there is something about the British style of very seriously acting out the most patently absurd satire that appeals to my senses in a way that attempts by most others really just can't quite capture for me. It's no doubt due to my somewhat greater than average childhood exposure of British television/cinema and literature - thank you very much, mother. At least she didn't curse me with any kind of appreciation for British music as well, that would've been a step too far.

That makes it twice Kubrick has surprised me, what with this and The Shining. I liked this more than The Shining, but I truly expected to loathe The Shining going into it, so coming out of it with any kind of positive impression has to be considered a win.

Lmao, the first thing you hear is Alex saying the most British nonsense over synth music and it is hilarious.

Well my droogs, it kinda vred my rassoodock every time nadsat was used too thickly, it made my gulliver oozhassny. :p

I didn't mind the film being British, it's the Russian based fictional slang Burgess created that I thought did not work all too well in film form. It's been a while since I watched the movie, but it was not easy to follow with having to keep track of fictional words. Hence my musing that it would probably be less problematic in the book where there's more time to mull it over. Caveat: that was a long, long time ago (comes down two to things - command of English at the time of watching and my inability to let go of not being able to properly hear any sort of dialogue, there's a reason I watch everything with subtitles... :shrugz:). I should probably watch it again.

Anyway, like almost five and a half years ago I posted this music video and said it would be what happend if Simon and Garfunkle created the theme song for A Clockwork Orange. Except with old people. :p

Nobody cared back then, here's to another attempt:

Could a movie like A Clockwork Orange even be made today? Who would have both the balls and the pull to adapt such a shocking, dark, and cynical work of satire today? The only director still active that I can think of that would both be foolhardy enough and could get a major studio to sign off on it is Tarantino.

Edit: I suppose someone could self-fund it, then they could do whatever they want. A Clockwork Orange was one of Kubrick's more low budget movies, which makes what he achieved all the more impressive.

Based on his body of work, I have a feeling that I wouldn't be nearly so keen on a Tarantino A Clockwork Orange,.

I guess I cheated, since I did have subtitles enabled. I thought most of them were relatively clear thanks to the context of their usage, but...reading them so that you know that what you're hearing is correct certainly helps a lot.

How I have existed fills me with horror. For I have failed in everything - spelling, arithmetic, riding, tennis, golf; dancing, singing, acting; wife, mistress, whore, friend. Even cooking. And I do not excuse myself with the usual escape of 'not trying'. I tried with all my heart.

In my dreams, I am not crippled. In my dreams, I dance.

Me neither, and I say that as someone who has thoroughly enjoyed a number of his movies, namely Pulp Fiction, Reservoir Dogs, Kill Bill (both), and the criminally underappreciated Jackie Brown.

On one hand I can see it being overwhelming, on the other I usually hate when films inorganically explain stuff like what all the fictional stuff (slang, technology, etc.) is. In A Clockwork Orange I think the slang helps establish the world as a dystopian future or alternate reality.

Yes, though I suppose that depends exactly what you mean by a movie like A Clockwork Orange. There's more than a few folks making films that are dark, violent, sexual, and very weird. I assume some of them are less than faithful adaptations. The kicker is they're low(er) budget indie films and/or made outside the US with government funding. Bad Luck Banging or Loony Porn comes to mind as a satire that is shocking, dark, and cynical.

The big problem is of course funding, the big studios are much more conservative and driven by algorithms, so good luck getting funding if your film isn't a proven money maker. I don't think any big established director who can get the big budgets would or could take the risk, Tarantino would rather play with action figures and do another western or period flick (or maybe sci-fi), Nolan would get high on his own farts again, Spielberg is in the boomer kitsch phase, Peele is too nice, and Scorsese or del Toro wouldn't get the budget. So I guess look to the indie films for something like A Clockwork Orange.

A Clockwork Orange today would have been an 8-part series on Netflix that started out well but went off the rails in season 2.

Honestly though, there is plenty of dark and edgy stuff being greenlit today.

am agreeing, but...

is good to recall where clockwork orange falls in the kubrick catalog. is after spartacus and 2001 and orange were a warner brothers release.  would we see a similar film from an established director nowadays? is possible, but major movie studios cannot afford to take risks the way they did in the 70s. is not the lack o' cojones 'cause o' dark and edgy content per se, but economics is different in 2022 and the current reality makes such releases extreme unlikely save as the kinda streaming fare you identify and possible indy stuff.  am recalling we mentioned chariots of fire not too long past as the kinda movie is near impossible to make nowadays, and not 'cause it were edgy or dark neither. the industry is in a tough spot with their tried and true theatre release model becoming less viable every year.

that said, am not a huge fan o' kubrick's orange. had the misfortune o' reading the book (including the oft omitted final chapter) before seeing the movie, so our pov were perhaps tainted the same way a person who saw movie first would read the novel different. curious, the movie is extreme faithful to the source material save for the manner in which kubrick used film techniques to subtle change his portrayal o' alex and the missing final chapter. kudos to kubrick insofar as his craftsmanship and skill, but am not able to embrace his vision.

HA! Good Fun!

Barbarian (2022)

This film is FANTASTIC. Genuinely horrifying on several levels in a way that most slashers wished they could be. The curveball thrown is beautifully executed in a way I have seldom seen pulled off. It's hard to say more without spoilers, so I'll wait to see if anyone else gives it a go.

I highly recommend this.

The Weird Al Biopic.

It was entertaining in that bizarre Weird Al parody manner to the max. Radcliffe hammered home the performance of Weird Al's decent into drink, drugs and ego.

I think when the fact that you can match the Weird Al biopic to the Funny or Die Weird Al biopic, it goes into a whole 'nother meta-parody of a parody of a parody...
