That was my reaction too. I was like "wait, is liking Twister a controversial stance?" That movie got mildly positive reviews from critics and a lot of people liked it and still do. Gizmodo sure is brave to proclaim their love of a popular and generally well received movie.

I don't doubt Twister haterz exist, but haterz exist for everything. If I looked hard enough I bet I could find someone hating on Rashomon.:p

I've never seen Twister personally, but especially outside the US a lot of people see it as being the ultimate generic/ formulaic US disaster movie. Based on what I've been told the main objection is... I'd kind of compare it to the hatred 'american cheese' (as in the 'dairy' slices typically used in burgers etc, not kitsch originating in the US) gets. Objectively it's inoffensive and bland, but for some that loops right around and becomes actively offensive.

Now, if the article was "Suck It Haters: Why We're Proud To Love Attack of the Clones," then I'd be curious to find out if this was someone trolling or if they had suffered catastrophic brain trauma.

There are two types of people in this world, people who like AotC and people who are wrong.

Is this meant to be a comedy?

Looks like a high fantasy adaption of "Sir Gawain and the Green Knight" to me. I don't get comedy vibes at all.

I once sat through the first Ice Age movie a few years back with someone else. It's a movie that...does not really have anything wrong with it, but it also doesn't do anything well either - utterly predictable and bland, just mildly annoying and obvious paper-thin characters, a plot that is so by the numbers that it's a wonder it wasn't machine-generated, etc. Watching it inspired such an absolute lack of any kind of feeling except general annoyance and irritability, I would've preferred to have watched something I hated. At least with that, I would've felt something and been able to approach the movie in a different way, like actively rooting for main characters' downfalls and cheering when the movie did the most stupid thing that it possibly could do. With something that's so incredibly...nothing like an Ice Age, it felt like a slow suffocation. If that's what Twister is, I freaking hate Twister.

Twister is arguably the best of these generic disaster movies that were all the rage in the mid 90ies. Every time it's on you can count your blessings that it isn't, say, Dante's Peak. :x

Sounds about right, but Ice Age is a more entertaining film than Twister, unless you like disaster porn with mid 90ies special effects and flying cows. Because that's the highlight of the film. A cow caught in a tornado going MOOOOOOOO while it wafts by.

Here it is. :p

edit:

I should mention that I kind of liked Ice Age, but that's really... really only because the German dub is a lot better than the English original.

Maybe it's just the way they cut the trailer. but i couldn't take any of it seriously. If they play it straight then it has potential to be cringe city.

Ice Age is a generally stupid movie (in a harmless sense), but it had Scrat, so I forgive it a lot else.  All the Ice Age movies should just be all Scrat, all the time.

Twister is a brain at door OTP popcorn movie.  I found it hilariously fun at the time.  "Cow!"
I also liked Dante's Peak ok - wasn't as fun as Twister tho.  But they outdrove that pyroclastic explosion! Movies love heroes outrunning ... stuff! Mostly I just liked Pierce Brosnan at the time....
The other volcano movie of that period - Tommy Lee Jones, Volcano (in Los Angeles!) - that was beyond even my limits for brainless disaster movies, because it wasn't even remotely OTP fun. And it was more "Lava" than "Volcano."  Which was boring.

all fantasy is arguable a bit silly when viewed from a real world pov. that said, gawain is not a save the world plot and may be a bit less ridiculous than the typical fantasy stories made into movies.  however, it is possible to view gawain as punishing with symbolism and mopey with introspection.

Spoiler

themes include the insufficiency o' the chivalric code to insulate persons from fundamental questions o' morality. redemption. faith, but not limited to Christian/religious faith, and other heavy stuff.

there is humour in gawain, but much o' it don't translate well to modern audiences and the the humor is gonna be akin to the sorta thing you would expect from a shakespeare tragedy as 'posed to hot tub time machine

am gonna concede the aesthetic o' the trailer is curious. only other movie we has seen by the director were, ain't them bodies saints. visuals o' the trailer did not make us think o' saints. also, the poet o' gawain expends tedious effort describing the magnificent and gleaming armour o' gawain which all readers is aware will prove impotent 'gainst the green knight's reply.  even so, the gleaming armour, even if inaccurate given the s'posed setting o' the story, clear were important to the poet. am not sure what we were expecting, but this were not it. such is not a criticism btw.

after viewing the trailer, we were left thinking guillermo del toro mighta been a better fit, but is doubtful he woulda' ever considered doing gawain

HA! Good Fun!

You guys aren't really anywhere near the target age range of Ice Age, so maybe cut it a bit of slack. My kids found it delightful. :p

Yeah, that excuse doesn't really fly for someone who has many favorite shows and movies that are also primarily targeted at children. If a movie is atrocious trash and makes me long for death, it makes me long for death and I'm gonna consider it accordingly!

Oh, I see, it's one of those movies I completely forget the existence of immediately after seeing 15 seconds of it because I've already tuned it out. Right then, :p.

I don't think a lot of your favorite shows are targeted as young as you might think. Ice Age is very much in toddler territory. My kids enjoyed it the most in that 2-5 age range. A movie like Ponyo, on the other hand, didn't really work for them until they were a bit older.

I liked Ice Age...my mom did as well. She was almost 60 when it came out. Not sure age matters much.. I think the second one works better, though, as there's a certain hit the lesson story beats that animation aimed at kids get that tge first Ice Age suffers from.

For what it's worth, I didn't think my people disliked TWISTER, either...

Ah yes, the days of the 'paired' disaster movies like Dante's Peak/ Volcano and Sudden Deep Impact/ Armageddon. Weird how despite theoretically being similar reactions differ so much. I liked Dante's Peak a fair bit as stupid schlock entertainment, can't remember a single thing about Volcano or Deep Impact but have definitely seen both, and the sort of out of scope negative reaction some have for Twister (or I guess, Ice Age) is exactly what I have for Armageddon. I know objectively it's just a big dumb disaster movie exactly like many others, but it manages to offend me in just about every way possible. Indeed, Armageddon would have been infinitely improved had it been paired with Sudden Impact instead.

Kind of wish I could wangle Event Horizon/ Starship Troopers into the paired movie theme too, there's always one person determined to take both of them completely seriously despite the cast producing more ham than the Chinese pig industry.

It's true, I don't usually watch movies made for toddlers. I guess it would've helped to have known going into it that it was made for toddlers - after all, why would adults want to watch a movie made for toddlers?

...Now shows for toddlers, that's what it's all about. Where my Peg + Cat and Let's Go Luna peeps at? We're gonna straight murder those rotten Daniel Tiger and PJ Masks kids.

I fancy myself to be a bit of a terrible movie connoisseur, however, while I have certainly heard the legend of Neil Breen, I have never actually watched one of his movies (aside from short clips), which is a black mark on my record. I will soon rectify that as there is a DVD now headed for my residence:

So thanks to the TV thread I think I'm going to try to watch a Pauly Shore movie or two to see if I can still enjoy it. Maybe it's like the Ernest movies in that I loved them as a kid but can't enjoy them the same as an old man. To those who are asking what's an Ernest movie, it's like a Madea movie but from the late 80s to early 90s.
