The dlc itself will point out the most recommended character in-game, you can check it there. If memory serves, it was Konstanten for SSS, Fassina for FS and Ydwin for BoW.

For instance, Konstanten is just a sidekick, but within SSS he comments like a proper NPC companion. I have not tried all the permutations, so I can't make any further recommendations.

Correct. Just like the other quests, companions with more special content are listen in the quest log.

Big picture wise:

Ydwin and  Vatnir for BoW

Konstanten for SSS

Fassina for FS.

In addition some of the main cast get more to say depending on the quest within each expansion - I remember Takehu and Rekke being recomended for one area of BoW, while Eder and Xoti for the other. Aloth was recomended for FS as well.

Btw, it's pretty interesting that all the main recommendations for the dlcs are sidekicks, not NPCs.

am thinking data mining revealed to obsidian how infrequent sidekicks were being used. one suspects players who used companions wanted real companions, and the people unconcerned 'bout companion v sidekick differences were just as likely to create custom party members as to use sidekicks.  were also a way to give players more new content which would feel genuine new. a couple extra lines from eder or aloth might go unnoticed, whereas sidekick additions would be more obvious. is nothing more than a guess, but am thinking obsidians made an effort to give players a reason to use sidekicks.

...

furthermore, gotta suck as a developer to add something to a game you think is kewl and then have nobody recognize your effort. why not, given an opportunity to make post release changes, improve chances for under explored content to be getting recognition.

personal pov and in the spirit o' full disclosure, is no way in hell Gromnir bothers with ydwin in party if not for fact we were told by developers the sidekick would have considerable input during dialogues/cutscenes o' BoW.

HA! Good Fun!

Yep, I would have to agree with pretty much all of that. Obviously it's nothing more than a guess, or rather speculation, but at least it's particularly convincing and sensible-sounding at that.

And I for one would also count myself among those who wouldn't give a toss about the sidekicks if it weren't for content specifically written for them.

Hardly - sidekicks had little to no content in the base game - giving them more content was an easy choice because:

1) they badly needed some depth

2) Fans wanted to learn more about them

3) You could write arcs from them, which didn't conflict with the base game content.

As such, already developed companions do get interactions when appropriate, supporting their already established believes/personalities, while fairly blank slates, such as sidekicks, get some much needed background.

I thought they were a good idea, especially to replace NPCs who die on you ... but you would have to play a game where you let the punches roll, no reloading unless you totally died.

Is Fassina Reccomended to be in the same quests as Konstanten ? since they both can have a romance ?  And does Rekke have a specific quest ?

I know of one specific interaction between Fassina and Konstanten, which is not quest specific, but it triggers if you explore certain dialogues option when talking to K. With F around (be it in party, or on the ship). They might have more interactions which I am not aware of - I tend to favour companions over sidekicks.

I dont think he gets much more content outside what was on the base game. He is recommended for one of the areas of BoW, but haven’t seen this content myself. Considering the context I wouldn’t expect it to be anything major.

Here's the odd thing about Vatnir in BoW: he's a specialist in dishing out freeze and corrode damage... in a DLC filled with mobs who are resistant to freeze and corrode damage. That all makes sense from an RP perspective but less so for gameplay. After my first fight with a load of frost spirits, I switched back to Xoti in order to bring the fire. Made life much easier.

I did it painfully with Vatnir, basically set him up as multi-class with chanter to get a little advantage out of him, and used him for healing. It worked but it was a lot more difficult without Xoti's high level priest spells.

He doesn't (the whole sidekick shtick is about their not having a quest and not participating in the companion relationship system.)

He learns Aedyran after a month of in-game time, at which point you can converse with him through a player-initiated dialog hub about the size of any companion's. He also has a few interjections here and there in the base game and DLCs, but fewer than a companion's. The same is true of Ydwin, with the caveat that she gets a fair deal of additional interjections in Beast of Winter.

And

Fassina --> more interaction in Forgotten Sanctum

as well as

Konstanten --> more interaction in Seeker, Slayer, Survivor

Edit: oops, that was already said. Apologies.

I just kept Xoti and used Vatnir as Rogue/Priest with focus on his spiritual Battle Axes whose lashes and raw dmg Bleeding Cuts work superbly with the Rogue's dmg bonuses, making him a very good melee dmg dealer with spells. Also in certain parts of BoW you will have totally different "biomes" like Ukaizo, the Bridge (lots of burn resistance) and "Inquisition-place".

Just keep an eye on questlog. All characters I mentioned are signposted via questlog’s recommended companions feature.

Generally speaking, unless the DLC specifically states which companions to bring along, all of them have about equal amounts of dialogue. For example: In FS, Aloth and Fassina are recommended and all the other companions chip in here and there. Sidekicks usually don't say much, but I seem to remeber Ydwin commenting a lot in FS.
