I think Kotor because it was the original and I don't like sequels all that much when it comes to games.

yeah, but you see, obsidian seems like a better developer and they seem to listen to the people, so i think kotor2 will be a much better game with a better story.

 

the first game's story was horrible, and there were countless bugs

i wasn't going to vote any but then i read "countless bugs" and i had horrible flashbacks of having about 10 zaalbars and no t3-m4, and then there was the bug that everytime i walked out of the sand people's base the guns would shoot me and instant death would occur, so i voted kotor 2

 

In my opinion when it comes to games the squels are better, but they are just the first one but improved (well thats what i thought about BG2 SoA)

yeah but he has already said he wont be buying the game so there is no reason for him to be here, other than annoy people. If he is not going to buy the game then he should leave. This guy either has too much time on his hands or likes to annoy people.

no game is bug free, but there may never be a game with more bug than kotor, well, except for Robotech Battlecry

your right i dont know but i should hope there would be less bugs because i assume they are using the same engine/programming/whatever and they probably know about most of the bugs in kotor, so the only bugs that could arise are ones they missed and ones they progammed themselves. I suppose the could put in more bugs than they take out but i sincerely hope that is not the case.

 

p.s. i know it wont be bug free as raven pointed out

I am going to say the first game.  The second is a hand me down game to a fledging company.  Sure it has some good veteren designers and programmers in it, but it is still a fledgling company.  Also the game has more restrictions in character development and I just hate that.  At least in the first one you aren't forced to play a Jedi from the beginning.

the fact that Obsidian isn't well known doesn't dicourage me about kotor 2 in the least. They wouldn't have handed the game of the year over to anyone that they didn't think could do something extrodinary with it, and just cause there a fledgling company is no reason to worry. look at Ubisoft, they are still up and coming but have put out awesome games from the start. or a how a bout Valve, they were nobody and then all of a sudden the world was in love with half life, or bungee, or.....the list goes on and on of fledgling gaming companies that have put out awesome games. bottomline is that until Obsidian gives me a reasson to worry, im not going to!!

 

 

 

 

btw- show me a guy who says he has a completely bug free console rpg, and i'll show u a liar. its just the nature of games that they are going to have a few bugs, some get fixed some don't. such is life!!

no game is bug free, but there may never be a game with more bug than kotor, well, except for Robotech Battlecry

I see you never played Daggerfall ...

 

It had 15 patches.

I kinda agree with Hades. After having played the game through, I want to test other character options, but the Jedi classes are quite like each other. In BG2, it took a really different way of playing Sorc and your average fighter. Add in more stealthy thieves, archers, bards, priests..

 

Now, when you become a jedi, you're forever condemned to the same 1 feat every three levels (and some more if guardian), same boring force powers, and lightsabers / robes.

 

It would be more fun if you had a choice to refuse training by the jedi council, and the force would start to manifest itself anyway, but to a lesser degree (or possibly, wilder, more dangerous).

Becoming a jedi in the game is something which drives the storyline, I mean, you aren't going to play too many RPGs where your character is a nobody, are you? Anyway, playing as this outcast jedi mandalorian veteran seems quite intriguing, and it'll be interesting how the character develops. There's also the possibility of the new classes involved (prestige classes) in which you can specialise, I imagine this means you are not limited to play *like* a jedi, wield all the weapons you want and heavy armour, get non jedi specific feats etc etc. I think this may be a possibility. I think the idea of being a jedi is just the convenience of being able to drive the storyline.

I didn't encounter any bugs in the Lunar series, or the majority of the Final Fantasy series.

 

And Visceris, you're not going to buy KoTOR2 like you weren't going to buy KoTOR1. You shouldn't be talking to people who don't already know you're full of crap.

I know and it sucks. That is why I will be skipping this title.

It's understandable that someone who has been into star wars games for a long time would like something diffirent for a while, but i think that you belong to a "not so silent" minority. I think that Lucasarts is under the impression that it wouldn't be a good investment, financially speaking.

 

In case of KotOR vs. KotOR II, i think that we're going to have the same experience as we did with Doom & Doom II. Nothing really new, but a good sequel nevertheless.

Best Star Wars flight sim was TIE Fighter, best Star Wars FPS was Dark Forces.

You think that Jedi Starfighter was better that X-Wing Alliance because it had Jedi and force powers? better recived? larger sales?

 

It was the vocal minority that just want jedi simulators, most Star Wars game fans just want a new game, I predict that Republic Commando will sell more that The Munchkin Lords.

Who do you speak for? Can i have some numbers please, or links? When someone comes with ballsy comments like that, it should be mandatory to provide proof aswell.

Strange how so many people are willing to spend so much time frequenting the forum for a game they clearly despise and want nothing to do with. Oh well.

 

Anyway, as for the poll question: It's a little hard to compare them since I haven't played one. I voted for KOTOR since it has the virtue of being the original.

Exactly. There's always a tradeoff of character options vs story. In KotOR the story required you to be a Jedi. If you refused training that would have been it, the end of the game, Revan the soldier/scout/scoundrel has an nice non Jedi life aqnd the council relies on someone else.

 

Even Fallout limits you. By the nature of the story you have to be capable at shooting, fighting, computers, talking or some other skill, but it's a set range of options, even if it is a lot wider than that of KotOR. If I wanted to be a baker in Fallout, the story wouldn't allow for it, I wouldn't be able to save the wastelands using a steady stream of baked goods. If people find just being a Jedi too restrictive, don't play the game, but don't pretend there aren't appropriate restrictions in other games.

 

 

I would like a bit more variation between the Jedi classes though. All it amounts to at the moment is a redistribution of hit/force/skill/feat points and force powers. Each class can do any job the others can, they'll just be slightly less effective at it.

Both those games are ancient, TIE Fighter is not even reviewed on GameFAQs (the collectors edition however is).

 

Ask any Star Wars player that played then and you see people will say TIE was the best, it sould be since after it we pretty much only get X-Wing vs TIE Fighter and X-Wing Alliance with the other "flight sims" being more arcade that anything else.

 

Dark Forces was good but I perhaps jump the gun, Dark Forces II (also known as THE Jedi Knight) was better recived but seeing how Jedi Knight had multiplayer, of course it was better that Outcast in terms of duals but there was stuff on the original I liked best, such as the sewer monster that are absent on the later games.

 

They are ancient of the dawn of the CD (original TIE Fighter and it add on was in 3.4 disks) and so its not like you can find reviews or numbers online, they predate the "online".

Jedi Knight is still one of the best FPS i ever played.

 

Outcast improved on several issues, but the original was still vastly supirior in most areas, and that game was 5 years older.

 

I liked Oucstat, but Raven disappointed me there...

Here's my thoughts on the issues presented:

 

On Kotor vs. Kotor II

 

KOTOR 1 will always hold a special place in my heart as it's the original of the series and the first truely brilliant Star Wars RPG (maybe even the only SW RPG, I don't keep track of these things). As such, it will live on forever as the classic... the standard to which all other SW RPGS (and RPGs in general) will be measured against for years to come. Nothing will ever be able to topple that status.

 

However, I believe that KOTOR II will surpass its predecessor in many aspects. KOTOR was purely and uncontestably brilliant, but there were flaws. Hopefully, Obsidian will be able to take up the project right were Bioware left off and improve the minute flaws to make a truely amazing game (hint: make a more satisfying ending :) ) However, though KOTOR II may be the more powerful of the two, no ammount of improvements can ever take away from that certain thrill that the original of the series provided. And I'm ok with that.

 

As for this debate over being a Jedi... well, Star Wars isn't -totally- about being a Jedi... but why in the name of all that's cheese would you play a game titled Knights of the Old Republic if it wasn't focused on Jedi Knights? Such things defty the standards of logic... but that's just my opinion.
