A lot of them work that way, but it's not really a standard. For example none of the New Vegas add-ons worked like that. In the lead up to the release, they called it Tales of the Sword Coast style expansion and while that did offer post game play, for the part the content in that was more meant to be played before the end game.

I agree, a lot of the higher invocations are really unimpressive, I really only use summon phantom, paralyze cone and summon ogres. Rather than cower and hide though, I usually set my chanter up as tanky as possible, usually they have the highest deflection in my group. Someone needs to fill the role of front and center meat shield, might as well be the guy whose class abilities are just as fast and just as good even in the biggest armor and shield possible. I'd really like to see some higher level phrases that are short duration and some high level invocations that need less phrases, I don't they need to be so uniform. I'd also like to see better options for ranged chanters, considering Kana starts with a gun and stormcaller works with chanters, I just don't see many options that make ranger chanters good, they basically the get one phrase for it, but using ranged weapons moves you further away from the enemies, so you attacking/debuff phrases aren't as good, so it doesn't seem worth the trade off.

I agree, I didn't want to use Galaxy at all, I was just throwing it out there as a suggestion because it did work and it worked on the first try, even if it took a lot of time and bandwidth. All my other GOG games I'm still going to maintain manually. My short term concern was just to get up and running again. Ideally though the manual patches would be easier to use, more reliable and have better instructions.

Upgrade Errors
MunoValente replied to sapientNode's question in Pillars of Eternity: Technical Support (Spoiler Warning!)
I was having all sorts of problems with the manual GOG patches and I ended up uninstalling, keeping my save files in the process (copied them elsewhere as well, just to be safe), downloading GOG Galaxy and reinstalling it from there. Took forever, but got it working. -
Update #101: Update 2.02 is Live
MunoValente replied to BAdler's topic in Pillars of Eternity: Announcements & News
Nope, I've never modded it and the manual patch made my game unplayable for a while, even after I fixed the initial problem with the missing file. I was also on Windows. Ending up uninstalling everything and reinstalling with Galaxy which seemed to fix everything. Given how often the game is updating and the amount of problems that seem to be related to the manual patching, I'd recommend Galaxy at least for this game, even if I don't plan on using it for any of my other GOG games. Something weird I noticed is that even with the manual patch the game seemed to be looking for Galaxy files even though at that point I had never installed Galaxy. -
I use chanters because they are fast. Their first chant happens immediately without using an action, so they can do something else as their first action; each additional phrase also happens without using an action. The key for me to make them most useful is to make sure to find ways for them to have something else to do while the chants are going, whether it be tanking, summon items, scroll casting, spell bound items like rotfinger gloves, abilities like Envenomed Strike or whatever. Invocations are slow, but I mostly see them as a bonus, and not a particularly important part of how I play them.

What about a pause button?
MunoValente replied to Edrin's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
A separate button that pauses without unpausing, sounds good to me, I definitely do run into the situation where I accidentally unpause enough for it to occasionally annoying, but not enough want to turn off the auto-pauses that I do use. It seems like it would probably be easy implement and there are plenty of free keys on the board. -
Switching to GoG Galaxy helped me, the manual patching on GoG had screwed up my game such that a bunch of my saves didn't appear, so I uninstalled and got it through Galaxy again and everything is working fine now. Generally I don't like to use clients and like to upgrade games on my own terms, but in this case because the game is updating so much and requires multiple files, I think it's worth to use the client to handle things. I also noticed in one of my logs when I had the manual patched game that wasn't working that the game looking for GoG Galaxy files, even though I wasn't using it and had never installed it, don't know if that wasn't breaking anything, failing to load files never looks good, especially considering how many problems there seem to be related to the GOG 2.02 patch.

So completely uninstalling and then the getting GOG Galaxy and installing from there seemed to fix it, so thanks. My guess is the manual patching screw it up somehow. Unfortunately forgot to copy of my pile of custom portraits before uninstalling and deleting the folders, so need to redo a lot of that, at least it's working though.

I was wondering why it would be looking GOG galaxy files when I never used Galaxy, it seemed weird. None of those files I attached would show on the loading screen. The ones that would load I did not include, if you want to look at some of those, I could include them. I guess I'll try uninstalling everything, getting galaxy and reinstalling everything with that.

White March is installed or it should be at least. I'd played it completely with one character that was lost and the second character had completed the white march areas and was in the process of doing Cragholdt. Installed the GOG white march patch 2.02 and the 2.02 patch for the main game. Are you suggested at some point that the main White March installation went missing? I had also previously installed the 2.01 patches for both White March and the main game right when those came out. If I get GOG Galaxy would that help at all?
-
I installed both GOG patches and in the process the all the saves on my last two characters don't appear on the load screen, even though they are still in my saved game folder. The save files from older games seem to work just fine. If anyone knows a work around for something like this, it would be great know, already reported in the bug section.

What we're seeing now is a regression though, South Park and Dungeon Siege were huge improvements in stability and this game wasn't that bad at release considering it's complexity and short dev time. The issues they are having now with patching and the expansion are definitely a step in the wrong direction though. Your experience with New Vegas seems like a pretty severe outlier, that game has a ton issues, especially freezes and crashes, but not being able to get it to run at all, is much less common.
-
I thought the game was pretty stable before 2.0 and the expansion, especially around 1.0.6, but getting White March has made it significantly worse for me. Dungeon Siege and South Park I think are easily the least buggy games of theirs I've played. This one was probably next, although since the expansion I'm not sure, at this point I'm probably having more problem with it than I did with Sith Lords, which wasn't the case a couple months ago.

Nice thing about this game is that if you don't like Vancian, you don't have to use it. You can build a perfectly good party without a Vancian caster or what I usually do is limit myself to one vancian who works as my big gun for tough fights. I would like to see the vancians do a little more per encounter at lower levels, though or least wizards, Druids at least have spiritshift and priests have radiance and interdiction, arcane assault I think gets old pretty fast though even if it's pretty decent, it's a boring ability; Grimoire slam is often limited applicability.

Installed 2.02 from GOG and all the save files from last two characters are missing from the game. They appear to save files folder still. Dropbox link contains my most recent few saves, the ones that did not transfer. Older characters have transferred. The two characters that didn't transfer went through the White March, the others did not. https://www.dropbox.com/s/vf4c6071iqku0nn/saves.zip?dl=0 and the output file https://www.dropbox.com/s/5v88ylt4kptdyjg/output_log.txt?dl=0

Update #101: Update 2.02 is Live
MunoValente replied to BAdler's topic in Pillars of Eternity: Announcements & News
So I got the GOG patches and got the missing file error, but also the save games of my last two characters aren't appearing in the game (they are still in the saved game folder though), both those characters were from after White March was released. Could the missing file error prevent the saves from transferring? -
By the time I reach level 9, I don't know if ever cast all of my level 1 spells in a single fight. In tough fights I use my strong spells instead, in easy fights they go too fast or aren't worth the effort. I don't think giving a fifth cast really makes a difference the vast majority of the time. I do however often use 2-3 slicken/chill fog against a single mob and it makes the fights trivial and I think it should have more of a cost. I still think that if they are going to weaken the amount of per encounter spells though, they should be available much earlier, like level 5 or 6. Maybe give them out at 5, 9 and 13 instead of 9, 11 and 13.

Given how easy the game already is, making one class slightly weaker is a lot easier than making every other class stronger and making every single monster in the game stronger. You're basically asking to re-balance the whole game instead of tweaking one thing. It's not like that haven't made some classes stronger, Paladins and Rangers are both stronger than at release.
