I'd rather say that playing a wizard and not casting spells is much more weird. Well, you would not not cast spells in PoE 1, especially later on with the per encounter spells. But you could not go all out in every fight (or you could but then you'd have to rest a lot). I view spells more as a strategical resource that you have to use wisely when you need them, i guess that's from my old D&D days.

I just finished the game as a single class wizard character. While i think poe 1 system was superior to deadfire's, i think some wizard's spells are still VERY impactful wether as a control/support or as a straight up damage dealer. Once you get access to lv3+ spells, you really start to shine, and by the end of the game you're a powerhouse, probably even more so than in poe 1. As far as grimoires go, i think it's a cool idea, i just wish there were more grimoires with special effects (i only found one). I still wish they would have kept poe 1's casing system, with per rest spells, it feels weird to me to be able to cast so many spells every encounter. And yet sometimes i wish i could cast more spells of a particular level in a fight. Also i'm not sure why some spells were nerfed to death like confusion which is pretty useless now, but there are still plenty of very good spells, so it's fine i guess.

Save Giacolo?
lonelornfr replied to Miro's topic in Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire Stories (Spoiler Warning!)
You can save Giacolo even if you don't answer correctly. I personally used "into the fray" on the paladin before he could hit Giacolo. After that it was a regular fight (as in no one else tried to go kill Giacolo). -
I will admit i felt a bit like OP when doing Neketaka. That was waaaaay too much dialogue / new faces / lore in one go for me. But like others have said, just don't do the whole city at once, take a break and go do something else, explore a new island, do some boarding (naval combat sux but boarding is actually ok).

I just can't figure it out and the cyclopedia is of no help. I played PoE 1 a lot, so i understand the concept of it, but my problem is i can't engage any enemy except with Eder (who is my tank, with several +X enemy engaged). When i attack an enemy with Pallegina (great sword) or Serafen (dual weild axe), there is never any "engagement arrows" and there is no disengagement attacks if the enemy just runs past them. It doesn't seem to be caused by any beneficial effect the target might have, since it happens on every enemy i tried. On the other hand, Pallegina and Serafen are able to inflict the "flanked" debuff. Does that mean you can't engage anyone unless you have at least a "+1 enemy engaged" buff through whatever mean ? But you somehow still count for the "flanked" debuff ?

Suggested Change to Vancian Casters
lonelornfr replied to JerekKruger's topic in Backer Beta Discussion
I just got the beta and i tried it for like an hour, so i'm by no means an expert on the new system, but i must say i was really disappointed in how spellcasters work this time around. I really like flexibility in a caster and they lost that somewhat in PoE 2. Also i seemed to notice status effect having much less effect than in PoE 1, like blind only reduce your deflection by 3 ? I could be wrong, but i dont think the people that played and enjoyed the original game, and are eagerly awaiting Deadfire were somehow hoping that it's sequel would be an oversimplified version in which each character use the same 3-4 powers every encounter ad nauseum. -
I've tried 6 wizards PoTD but that was pretty hard and required mucho micro. Killing stuff with (grazes of) chill fog takes a long time, and you have to rest every other fight. I've abandonned the idea pretty early since it wasnt even really fun, but i guess things would be better at higher levels when you have the big nukes and per encounter lv1 spells.

Dirty Fighting doesnt proc.
lonelornfr replied to Siltherium's question in Pillars of Eternity: Technical Support (Spoiler Warning!)
Is dirty fighting the skill that is supposed to turn a % of hits into crits ? If so, the same thing applies with the "dire blessing" priest spell. However parsing the combat log, i noticed that dire blessing would turn some hits into crits. My impression was that (and i very well may be mistaken about this), you had a 20% flat chance that any hit would be turned into a crit, not that any roll from 80 to 99 was automatically a crit. Which would be a lot less good against easier mobs but at the same time better against high end stuff. -
Holy cow, i'm not throwing any tantrum, i only said i had "mixed feelings" about it. This was my only post in this thread. Hell i even said that indeed the game would have to be balanced around pre buffing if Obsidian let us do it. You either need to take an anger management class, or you're taking me for someone else. Or the thought that someone doesnt agree 150% with you is too much to bare ? Wow i'm speechless.

I actually changed the difficulty of my 3 barbarians game to POTD, via the console command. I can confirm that my 3 barbs did slaughter everything that had the audacity to even look at them sideway. I left the AI on barbs on (agressive / aggressive). Quick buff from the priest, slicken from my mages, then /popcorn. It was pretty damn fun. It might however prove pretty difficult the early levels, i'd probably level up to like 5 with a different roster if i had to do it again. TL;DR : Barbs are dope yo !

So yeah i've just done the fight and it felt about the same as the adra dragon. Chain cast whatever CC you have on it while clearing all the adds, and then focus on the dragon. I'm running 2 wizards so it wasnt that hard. It was pretty much the last thing standing in my playthough tho, so i was lv14 and armed to the teeth. Anyway nice fight

It's much less "artificial" than pre-buffing before an encounter that you as a player know is about to happen, but that the characters would have no knowledge of. So? If you are disturbed at the thought then don't buff, only if your character knows about an encounter. Or they should take away the ability from everyone in a single player offline game, because you don't agree with it personally? If i'm prepared to pull back and buff, it only makes sense that i know about an encounter. Usually because i'm scouting ahead, which makes sense when you're assaulting a dungeon. Also you can calm the f. down, i said i had mixed feelings about it, not that they should take away your precious whatever you feel entitled to.

If you can buff your party to the teeth before engaging, the game has to be balanced around that fact (or be a walk in the park). But i do agree that not being able to cast most spells unless a ennemy spotted you is a bit silly and feels artificial. To counter that i often pull the ennemy back long enough to let me cast a few buffs which feels even more artifcial (dire blessing, devotion of the faithfull...). So while i understand why they made this decision, i have mixed feelings about it.

Yes, losing all you spells whenever you respec is a problem. I would think Obsisian will change it, when they get the chance, so that you only forget the spells you have chosen when you leveled up. But given how busy they are at the moment trying to fix a fecalmatterload of bugs, it's probably not happening any time soon. Edit : bypassing censorship.

My thoughts/review on PoE
lonelornfr replied to sorinmask's topic in Pillars of Eternity: Stories (Spoiler Warning!)
You know, if the whole disarming / spotting secret is a deal breaker for you, you can just adjust one of your charactrer mechanics via the console commands. That's what i do because i want to disarm everything and i dont like it from behind rogues. -
Unpatch to older version, is it possible?
lonelornfr replied to Gs11's question in Pillars of Eternity: Technical Support (Spoiler Warning!)
The new patch is nothing short of a disaster, everyone have major bugs with it. Unfortunately i'm using steam so i have to endure it. -

lonelornfr replied to Gs11's question in Pillars of Eternity: Technical Support (Spoiler Warning!)
Not if you're using steam. If not you can simply uninstall the game and then reinstall it w/o upgrading to 2.01.
