It's 30 degrees (Celcius) here, waiting for the sun to set a bit before venturing out (and braving the holes in ozone layer) for some shopping Generally just procrastinating and catching up on all the "to-do" stuff that had piled up since last New Year (which was the last time I had some time off from work and didn't travel somewhere).

Yeah, I discovered that a while ago. Even my old copy of Dead Space could be registered there and downloaded rather than reading from scratchy old DVDs I've redeemed a lot of games on Steam, but trying to think of games actually bought through Steam these holiday sales (well, Ok, the last 2 months)... Jade Empire Elemental: Fallen Enchantress Endless Space - Emperor Special Edition Air Conflicts Pacific Carriers Air Conflicts: Secret War Orcs Must Die 2 - Complete Pack King's Bounty: Warriors of the North Most of them on heavily discounted sales (I cheated and peeked at my account page).

Almost out of the game market... or just a transition?

One of the reasons I never touch a Ubisoft title again. Not that I wasn't tempted by the original Assassins Creed when it was on sale. I grudgingly caved in and installed Origin (because I already had an EA account from the past), making it the only (inferior) Steam copy so far. Besides Ubisoft titles, anything with GFWL on the sticker gets to stay on the shelf too (Little Lamplight isn't the only reason I didn't bother reinstalling FO3). So yeah, I can understand the sentiment The entire idea behind things like Steam and Origin is control and tying the customer to the publisher, so they can target their sales efforts and reap your money through sales and microtransactions. Insidious, but it seems to work. Most of my purchases these days happens through Gamersgate, GoG and Humble Bundle. -

There are a few exceptions Gorth is an XCOM Operative? Fighting a unification war? Favourite pet peeves... people who mutilates English by thinking that site/sight, through/threw, horde/hoard etc. are interchangeable

Let's Play: Baldur's Gate Trilogy - Ch26 (Mae'Var)
Gorth replied to Tigranes's topic in Computer and Console
For this particular LP, I think it's neither? It's just Tigranes playing solo and sharing his experiences (and embellishing and elaborating a bit here and there). All communication happens in this thread. -
I don't know if anybody has been following the news in Egypt recently. I know we had a 'Syria' thread, but couldn't really find anything about Egypt. Egypt opposition leaders face 'incitement' probe '...and so it begins' I suppose few people are truly surprised. The old dictator is gone and a new dictator starts consolidating power by persecuting the opposition leaders and removing them. Question is, are islamist dictators an improvement over secular dictators? I would put my bets on 'Not'. Will Egypt become the next Iran? I suppose the only thing preventing them from joining forces is the insurmountable barrier of their differences (Shiite/Sunni).

I think our leader has grown rather callous over the last few adventures Where the heck *did* the dogmeat go?... maybe it fell out of your inventory if it (protagonists) was already full when mixing the stew? -

If you go back a century or more, the same people you would (or not, depending beliefs) entrust with sticking a scalpel in your guts and remove your appendix if it's inflamed, are the same guys who would tell you that your heart did the thinking, plague could be cured by bleeding the patient (since the disease must be in the blood!). Those who study the workings and the chemistry of the human mind are by no means perfect, but they'll get there eventually. To be honest, I think in its current state, diagnosing mental disorders correctly is about as hard as predicting the weather correctly for a week in advance. You have all the signs and indicators and experience with similar situations in the past, but in the end, it is currently something very intangible you are dealing with. What doesn't help is the big money involved, and I know back in Denmark, somebody did raise the issue a few decades ago, about the medical practitioners objectivity when they were part owners or shareholders in the medico industry. Some clever investigator noticed a pattern between prescriptions and relations between doctor and manufacturer. Maybe somebody should take a good look at kickbacks and fringe benefits for those handing out the prescriptions and doing the treatment?

If you "think" you have a mental disorder, you probably don't. For most people, it's no better or worse than having an allergy, a skin condition or bad eyesight. In some cases, it can be so severe it's debilitating and help is needed. In that case, seek professional help, not the quacks, the self titled experts, the scientologists and similar who claims to have patented mental well being (whatever else you do, don't listen to random strangers on the internet).

I was checking out GoG's Christmas sales when I noticed this easter egg on Master of Orions product page... cute

Which is why a 'democracy' will always be a pipe dream just as much as 'communism'. The latter failed spectacularly and the former replaced ideals with consumerism in such insidious ways that most people don't even realize they have been 'bought' (because the fiction of control seems to calm the masses). Currently guns is 'big business' and therefore you will be up against insurmountable odds on the propaganda and lobbying side. Somebody showed some interesting research from Harvard, might have been here, might have been BBC, but the interesting observation was that gun ownership was on the decline. Who knows, maybe it dies out by itself some day and it becomes a manageable factor, like the tobacco industry (who once wielded similar power).

That troll fight was epic! Is that Kalah's lamp thing a mod? Don't remember ever seeing that. -
Watching Rocky Horror Picture Show (25th anniversary edition) for the umpteenth time. Some things are just timeless.

Well, since Cantousent isn't going to do it this year, I figure somebody has to do it with the day peeking just around the corner. The unofficial Christmas greetings thread where we pull the rug under political correctness, gives consumerism the middle finger and wish each other a Merry Christmas, regardless whether christian, pagan, atheist, cultist or just don't care. As usual, those wanting to bash religions and traditions can take a seat on the back row and shut up. Just trying to survive? Missing loved ones? No roof over the head? Exams looming around the corner?... No idea who you are. Hope people have some good (less bad) days ahead and find comfort in some preferred company, whether family or loved ones. Merry Christmas everybody

According to the same logi No, Americans (as well as many other people around the world, don't feel all superior, Europeans, I heard about how a bunch of looneys in France thought UFOs would save them if they went to some hill in some tiny village on the 21st,) are stupid and gullible and easily fall for History Channel tinfoil hat BS. The Mayans never predicted the end of the world. This is literally the end of a calendar cycle in the Mayan calendar. A new one starts when the old one ends. And once again, the Mayan civilization died out 1000 years ago. According to the same logic, the world ends 31/12 this year, because the calendar on the door of my fridge ends there Just goes to show indeed how people are willing to believe in things, starting to reaffirming each others fears and concerns... and people wonder how cults, sects etc. pops out of nowhere. Wasn't there once a radio show, War of the Worlds that caused a mass panic? Or was that entirely an urban legend?

27 degrees Celsius is not a warm spring day for Scandinavians, it's a heat wave (complete with warnings to seek shade and drink plenty of fluid) Took me a bit getting used to temperatures around 45-46 degrees in summer down here (that's around 115F)

Sorry to hear about your troubles Hurlshot. My only real family issue is that they live more than 20000 km away. Not sure how to put it politely, but without more context, the letter sounds like writing of a "condescending" person.
