Abusing a system in a solo gane is up to the player. If he do so and spoil the challenge, then the problem comes from the player in the first place. I noticed this trick in BG2 while fighting lichs in Athkatla :D So what ? Again, nobody points a gun against the head of the player to force him to abuse the system... In that case you don't have a problem if developers put a "I win button!" as an ability for all classes. After all, it is a player that chooses to use or not use it.

If you are player that likes more story side of rpg I would recommend to speak to people and look things so that you can get to know lore and some of the character's If you like combat I would recommend to leave starting map soon as possible and go one of the other maps and hunt down local wild life and maybe find your way to one of the dungeons If you like exploration then you probably should make yourself familiar with stealth and searching mechanic of the game and start to find hidden things from the maps. Mix and stir this aspects so that you find balance that corresponds with you preferences. If you find all three aspects to be dull in beta then I would recommend to wait final release, so that beta will don't eat your willingness to play it. He forgot to tell you that you should talk to people first no matter what you do as most of your XP comes from quests.

Apparently it's all one big misunderstanding. Yeah, clearly this was a kickstarter for a NwN2 sequel. More like a NWN2/DAO mix.

My Perspective on Pillars of Eternity

OK, then I hope for PoE2 they can make it better -
Unbalanced is OK if that unbalance leads to interesting gameplay like it did in IE games. Abusable? No. It just leads to less fun and makes games boring and without challenge. In IE games there was an abuse that would lead to a stupid game. You could fight mages by waiting by stairs to another level, wait until the mage started casting a spell and click to exit to another level. Then come back and repeat the process until the mage has spent all spells. Similar to this, PoE should not let players abuse engagement to get free attacks and super easy fights

Engagement Mechanics- Problems and Solutions

I am for kiting not being free but it should be possible if your character is faster then one chasing you. And I don't see kiting as something bad. -

So does PoE have less attacks. If you are running back you are not getting most DPS as you have slower recovery times. And in 5e you can move and do all attacks. And you could do so in 2e as well (which IE games are based on). In neither 5e or 2e could you kite, however. In either system, the pursuer can move twice as fast as a character moving and shooting, and once the pursuer catches the kiting character, the kiting character is screwed. They can either run, or move and shoot, at which point they provoke an attack of opportunity (rules for that were in 2e, though under a different name and not implemented in IE) or they can safely disengage and move at normal speed. Either way, next turn the pursuer just catches up to them again. No they are not screwed. They are still better to move away and use all their attacks while melee guy only gets his opportunity attack. That is of course if the ranged guy is faster than melee guy. Just like in IE games, you could not kite 1v1 if you were not faster. -

That "benny hill combat" was also normal part of pen&paper D&D. It is also part of LotR movies. You don't see Legolas standing still. In the first movie, the fight around the well inside dwarven kingdom was full of all kinds of movement. If you are ranged and can move and shoot that is a normal tactic. -

Let's hope they delay this game again if needed. I'm not sure they got enough time to polish this in time for early 2015 release. Don't see that happening. v364 is already in a playable state, though still rough arround the edges. With likely 4 more patches to go, if the pace remains about the same, I really can't see why you'd even call for another delay. I don't know if that is true. So far people are still mostly giving feedback on almost basic combat elements. You know the game is close to done once feedback is only about balance of individual skills. Some things that have been marked as not good enough from day 1 of beta (like characters not standing out enough from background) are still a problem 3.5 months later. And who knows how many quest bugs are in the whole game. Inxile did a mistake by not letting beta players get access to second part of the game and it was filled with bugs as a result. I am afraid the rest of PoE will be full of quest and story bugs once the game is released. -
Well I am not saying DA:O did it perfectly but I don't remember being many such quests. Only grinding from DAO was the caves under the dwarves where you grinded same groups of enemies in same corridors while trying to move on with the story. It was only "I want to pull my hair out because this is so boring and tedious" moment in that game.

Stronghold worries

I hope you are right kat7ra. Personally since I could not find any info about real consequences it makes me worried and I don't trust people so easily. -
The only possible problem is that OE promised too many classes, more than they can deliver in a finished state.

Stronghold worries

Those links didn't really answer my questions. They only told me PoE Stronghold will have more options but nothing about long term reactivity to player decisions. -
Stronghold worries

Considering same people are behind both games it is very connected and worries me. -
Hey, I know it is too late now to change anything major but I still want to present my worries. Only time OE did stronghold was in NWN2 and that was not a very good job in my opinion. Well yes, it had options for your character and it was fun but it failed in most important part: it had no real consequences for player choices. At that I mean the last battle. Your party completely decided it no matter what you did with the stronghold. There wasn't even a NPC that came later and said "My village could have survived if only KC had some well trained troops to help us". In my second play I spent 0 resources on troops and upgrading walls and all I lost is some money from bandits raiding caravans. I want this stronghold to be better done. I want NPCs to die and people depending on your decisions to have a say on your good or bad management. I want real consequences and a world that recognizes your choices. I really hope OE understood the bad things about NWN2 stronghold and made it better this time around.

It is their working title for a BG1EE expansion. The word on the street is that it is supposed to cover the events between end of BG1 and start of BG2. That is why Irenicus will appear again. Also they said they been able to make IE engine do some things never before seen in IE games for this Adventure Y. -
You and I have same thoughts (but I have been brainstorming about it since yesterday). Not only 50% but add additional 10% slow per each additional person that is engaged with someone. Currently if you exit engagement with two people that is two attacks vs you but in this system you would move even slower. It would prevent these abuses like in Sensuki videos. The enemy would run towards back line and through your melee engagement area and should then switch to your melee guys without your party being able to get lots of free attacks on him. Reach weapons would still be useful as they would let you slow enemy a bit before they can slow you and let your ranged get an additional attack in before melee starts. At the same time Barbarian burst of speed would actually become a useful skill.

I haven't played any MMORPG. Hence, it's kinda hard for me to say what exactly are the "MMO parts". The exploration didn't feel to me particularly different from BG1 and ME1, for instance. Ah, I assumed it is well known how MMORPG work. The MMO parts are simple grindy quests that ask you to bring X of something or kill Y of some creatures. They are also about combat being full of cooldown based skill and respawning monsters. Oh and collecting crazy numbers of components.
-
Let me quote myself from another topic: Now with this change AI just needs to know to switch to closer target once engaged so you don't abuse its slow speed with normal attacks while he tries to get to that guy behind.
-
Can anyone playing DAI but that has not played any MMORPG (at least not any that they liked) tell me how do you managed to stand to play all the MMO parts of DAI? I hate MMORPG and any I tried were not fun. And many people say DAI is full of MMORPG gameplay. How do you do it?

Well it depends on how much DT it gives. Stoneskin in later editions of D&D also gave DT (10 to be more precise) vs physical attacks. It let your wizard live longer while not being immune to all damage and it worked OK. In PoE it might be even better if you plan to have armor on your wizard as DT from armor and DT from Ironskin might stack and let you be immune to grazes and normal hits with only criticals being able to damage you.
