  1. I'd expect you to be able to make the connection as an intelligent person, Walsh. "Oh, the 2nd hand sellers are the real criminals, so I'm actually doing a good thing by downloading the game myself". The art of good business is being a good middleman. Money doesn't go from consumer to game publisher before other actors get in on the action and in doing so contribute to overall economic activity. On a related matter, one would have to show that these middlemen, such as used game sellers, negatively affect the quality and budget of games before comming out against them. Assumptions aren't useful here. I believe I read something about how trade-ins actually increase the amount of new game sales, which makes sense to me. I know personally the only way I can buy new games regularly is by trading in my older games to offset some of the cost. We know how important those first few weeks are for the sales numbers, and so if trade-ins are actually driving those numbers up, it seems like a good situation for everyone.
  2. that's my point though. what's so bad about it, when you take second hand sales into consideration. I mean "pitting" the two. imho, torrents are way better and more sensible I have no idea where you are going with this. A used game is sold to one person. That is much less than the thousands that can make use of a torrent. The original buyer of the now used game also no longer has access to the game. The person who set up the torrent has no such problem. What is not clear here? Second-hand sales are not illegal because you are taking a product you own and giving it completely to another person. This may be negative for the industry, but it is not illegal. However, buying one product and then allowing it to be spawned endlessly is very clearly illegal.
  3. I don't see how buying a second hand game is different from downloading it. only in the first case you actually pay money to the guy. I don't think it's possible to convince me second-hand sales are more "legal" than torrents Ebay has a large amount of stores that sell new games, actually. But second-hand games is a pretty different argument. It's legal, as Gamestop's entire business model is built around it, but I can definitely see the argument that it is bad for the game industry. Comparing it to a torrent, where hundreds if not thousands of people make use of one copy of a game is pretty laughable though.
  4. Kind of late there, buddy. Dang, it's always the little things that slip your notice.. my bad. I think I remember Kirk Cameron talking those up years ago.
  5. There are a lot of avenues. A few years back I ordered a Baldur's Gate compilation pack from some specialty store on Amazon. You've got Ebay also. There are tons of legal ways to track down an old game in today's world. Or you can say shucks and move on. These are video games, not insulin.
  6. Heh, not quite. I'm talking about an Obsidian developed version (or really any good developer.) Not to knock whatever no name studio made that game, but I'm guessing it is a standard waste of an IP. We get them with everything. It sparked my curiousity, here is the mission statement for Crave Games:
  7. It's on Netflix streaming and it keeps coming up on my recommendations, but it looks terrible. I watched Role Models on cable, it's a pretty hilarious comedy.
  8. Slowtrain, Deadliest Catch: The Game sounds phenomenal. Seriously, I could see that being a fantastic sim/adventure/RPG. There are quite a few ways they could do that game and make it epic, too. You could even have an awesome multiplayer aspect. I think I need to lobby for that to be Obsidian's next project.
  9. I think you are talking more about the people setting up the torrents and all that, which are definitely pirates, but there are a heck of a lot less of them than there are people who simply use the torrents to get free stuff.
  10. I'm not sure about that completely, I mean they managed it with the movie, and that probably has a similar development cycle to a video game. It just might not age well as a game, meaning if you don't play it when it comes out it might not be all that relevant.
  11. Wrong, yes.. Morally repugnant.. I dunno I would reserve that term for something worse. 'Morally having been out of the fridge for too long and not exactly safe to eat, but not entirely repugnant either' perhaps. Hmm, I'm thinking it might be more like morally unripened fruit, given that a good majority of pirates are people who are young or have a very immature view of business.
  12. It's a game. You don't have to play any of them. Your choice should be to not play it at all.
  13. Geez, with melodrama like that, would you prefer they handle the Real Housewives of Orange County for their next game? I fully understand that in this day and age, a mid-level developer takes whatever work they can. Money is money. But really, is this any different from a Jersey Shore rpg or A Ghost Adventures rpg pr Big Bass Adventure WHite Water Fishing or whatever? Sure, if someone likes South Park or Jersey Shore or Ghost Adventures or Big Bass fishing then they're probably all fired up a potential game. But, for me, speaking personally, it's a disappointing direction for Obsidian and hopefully not an indicator of the direction of other future projects. It really just depends what they do with it. The Jersey Shore one may bother me, but the other two don't, because I think Obsidian can make it their own. I'm not sure if they can do that with South Park. I think it's way too early to tell. I haven't really watched the show in a long time. I may end up with zero interest in this title. But I'm not going to begrudge them for it unless they become a studio completely devoted to turning Comedy Central shows into games. It's one title, it's an interesting opportunity for Obsidian, and it keeps the company in business. I don't see the real negatives here.
  14. Geez, with melodrama like that, would you prefer they handle the Real Housewives of Orange County for their next game?
  15. DRM schemes may suck, but I understand businesses wanting to protect their investments. Pirates have no justification for what they are doing. It is completely wrong and morally repugnant.
  16. I believe Team America: World Police was actually pretty successful. Good reviews and decent revenue on a film that was probably fairly inexpensive to put on screen. Heck, it was an R-rated puppet movie, it did amazing given that hurdle. BASEketball (which they didn't write or direct) and Orgazmo are a bit of cult classics at this point. They also have a very successful musical, The Book of Mormon, that they collaborated on. None of this really spells video game success, but it does show some range.
  17. We got our tree today, and now the lights are on it. Next we will put on the ornaments, but it's tricky this year with the little one. We need to keep the breakable ones high enough so he can't grab them.
  18. The guys who make South Park are extremely productive and have managed to release multiple movies along with a long running TV show. I really doubt they are hard to work with. They released a successful film with puppets for goodness sake. Also, the topical issue is the same with movies, you are looking at longer development cycles for both. I doubt that will be their biggest hurdle. Making gameplay fun will likely be the biggest obstacle.
  19. I'm pretty sure there are loads of fans of South Park that will buy the game if it's good. It pretty much depends on the delivery and with licenced games as always there are those who will pick it up not knowing about quality at all, just because it's based on a show they like. I played The Simpsons open world sandbox game back in the day, it was very well done. I think it came out about 8 years ago or so. It was basically GTA but in Springfield. I'm assuming Primus will do the music for this game.
  20. I played on a EU server for awhile, and I didn't have any lag at all.
  21. I write the date December 2nd, 2011. So 12/2/11 makes perfect sense to me.
  22. We really know very little about this yet, I'm really thinking it will be a direct download game for the Xbox Arcade/PSN Home. That would mean a smaller team, short dev. cycle, and possible episodic content. As I mentioned, it worked well enough for the Penny Arcade game, which was also an adventure/RPG. It will also allow it to stay closer to current events, as Trulez mentioned. Although there are plenty of current events with a longer shelf life. edit: Or maybe not, apparently there is already an XBLA game coming out. Ah well, it's all speculation at this point. edit 2: I'm imagining a Willy Beamish type game at this point. I have no idea why.
  23. I'm putting the breaks on playing it for the next two weeks. Early Access will probably start on Friday the 16th, and I don't want to get attached to anything that will be wiped. I want to save it for release day.
  24. I can see it taking on a Penny Arcade style of play as well. I didn't think a webcomic could be a decent game, but they managed it. So I'll just wait and see. As for the people that are indignant about South Park in general, that is soooo 10 years ago.
  25. To be fair, woman are very forgiving if you get them enough gifts.
