Atheism and religious belief are both absolutist ideologies. The statement that 'god does not exists' is just as uncompromising as 'god exists'. Education shouldn't waste time on either, and least of all the US right wing Christians who seem to constantly crave attention.

Thats because it's a good excuse, and imperialism isn't entirely dead yet either, although it's present incarnation can better be described as the negative effects of globalization and its transnational conglomerates exploiting local resources. Thats not at all unlike merchant companies operating under charter during the worst of imperialism, although they are no longer encouraged by nation states, but operate on their own, without the extremes of slavery and with the added element of caring about their own image.

I don't know about that, but you don't have to listen long to Mugabe to realize that he is himself a rather sad ironic victim of imperialism, making the experience of imperialism into a sort of theory of everything when talking about Africa. Theories that try to encompass too much are always wrong, it reminds me of fundamentalist readings of Marx, just like the means of production are not the tealeaves in which you can find an explanation for any eventuality, neither is imperialism, but it is a defining feature of modern African history.

That continent got the worst imperialism has to offer, and hasn't recovered. There is progress measured over centuries, but its slow going.

I would argue that writers, the ones that are any good that is, are people who notice and comment on what influences society over time for a living, as much as any academic does.

I don't think you need to be a social studies or psychology PHD to comment on media saturation and violence in computer games. It's so much part of our daily existence after all.

Trying to protect your children from mass media is doomed to failure, the desperation inherent in such an attempt is exactly what politicians tap into when they get involved and comment on the subversive influence of computer games. It's just desperation enough to move people off their couches and down to the voting booths.

VlC works fine, thats what I use. I like Chrystal player the best, but it isen't free and it is dependent, like media player, on codec downloads for playing various non dvd formats, VLC seems to make do with just DirectX/draw

It's a rather successfully applied bogus 'us or them' terminology. Chinese immigrant communities across the world are among the more insular. Anyway it's understandable why people would object to violence and destruction of property. The official language and position is to regard Tibet as a quaint province and blame recurring problems on a few bad apples. They don't seem keen to realise that a distinctly Tibetan culture remains that is still not at all compatible with their idea of how it should be. Thats how it is with displaced and discriminated cultures and peoples, their self identity only grows stronger with adversity. Remember China is a country that still idolizes Mao, who brow beat the entire country into one way of thinking, or else.

I would like to know exactly how you would substantiate what happened in the recent riots in Tibet, and who was killed by who. Also, does a general movement towards active engagement stop being justified because of violence in the street. Street riots work on a chaos theory of their own, any demonstration can turn violent and things spin out of control.

Probably the national guard, they get to take their rifles home here anyways.

If it's alright to use the Olympics to champion the greatness of Nike and AT&T why is it wrong to use it to talk about something that really matters. Perhaps bland commercialism is a safe place from which violence is unlikely to originate, but... Terrorism and activism are scorned because they don't play by the rules of modern societies. They steal attention and aren't founded in capitalism and consumerism. They didn't pay for their air time. Well I think it's well worth the effort trying to steal the terrorists' weapon and use it in defense of liberty. The only real weapon we have against China is trade, but no one is mad enough to threaten China with trade sanctions, after all we are all interconnected in one world economy. What is left then, if you want the kind of attention and air time that only conglomerates can buy.
