  1. So something I don't get <_< If you can max out perception and do just fine, what does it matter which stat you max? People like to build their characters. Anyway, the problem is that it doesn't really matter what you do when spending points on your attributes. Maxing out might, constitution and dexterity does seem to be the most helpful for every class though. TBH I think you could dump every single stat and still play the game without any problem at all. The numbers seem to be more cosmetic than anything else, because their usefulness is minimal.
  2. The area has indeed doubled, but that still isn't a massive increase. Not to mention that the area of the smaller circle is sufficient in practically every combat situation.
  3. Yes it is. It is useless for any non spell casting class, and even then it doesn't make sense to put points in it because it hardly has an effect on the AoE. The AOE increase isn't intellect's only effect. It also increases the duration of abilities. I still consider intellect to be a dump stat, but seeing that you can max out 4 attributes anyway, it might be better to dump perception and max out intellect. Oh man, I just don't like this attribute system. It is just a bunch of min-maxing, where you should always max out might, constitution and dexterity.
  4. Yes it is. It is useless for any non spell casting class, and even then it doesn't make sense to put points in it because it hardly has an effect on the AoE. 3 int: 18 int: Not worth it. A real nice dump stat... unless you want a few more dialogue options. heh <_< Eh, doesn't seem to be too difficult with dumbing might, con and dex if you ask me Have you tried it? Let me guess, it is almost the same thing as simply dumping every stat. Amirite? ^^ But if you did try it, then you would still have points leftover to spend on your attributes. Hmmmm....
  5. I just tried it (goes fast, because you can avoid all of the combat, lol) I went to the ogre cave without the quest. I found the cave and got 0 XP. I talked to the Ogre and told him to leave and got 0 XP. Then I went back to Rumbold and told him the Ogre is gone and got.... 0 XP. Nothing, nada, zilch. Not even a cute little piglet. lol This XP system is so ridiculously stupid and broken. What the hell were they thinking.
  6. I don't like the attribute system. Intellect is a dump stat, there is no reason to not max out might for every class, two attributes are used in combat solely for interrupts (this mechanic makes more sense as a class talent anyway), attributes don't affect your defense stats in any way, you can easily max out 4 (!) attributes.... and so on. This has to be one of the most transparent and senseless attribute systems I have ever seen. To be honest, PoE might as well just only have three attributes (might, constitution and dexterity) the rest are pretty superfluous.
  7. http://forums.obsidi...tice/?p=1486643 IndiraLightfoot, on 21 Aug 2014 - 6:50 PM, said: Alright folks, well, this certainly answers that: The quest-only xp system is intended this way (perhaps with some long quest being divided into one or two xp chunks before the final xp lump)! So, no mistake, this is what they meant by objective/challenge xp, it seems. I'll be darned. It's a bit like the quest xp system of M&M X, but without the rest of its xp system: without the teachers, and without those progressing skills from rather fast levels, IIRC. I was pretty certain that Quest based XP was part of the design goal... but at least we know now for certain. Sad. Don't give up hope, my friends.
  8. The problem is simple: you and your fellow whiners heard that they would be taking some very broad aspects of some old RPGs and in your heads decided that meant that Obsidian was making Baldur's Gate 3. Calling people whiners because they have an opinion that differs from yours is about as productive as if I would call you an ass kisser because you hail every decision that the developer makes as a word of god without fault or error. I think it would make much more sense to change the mechanics so that all of the fans and backers ( =fans of the IE games) are happy. That would make much more sense than this endless conflict about the XP system, etc. Obsidian has said that the target audience are the fans of the IE games, more specifically Baldur's Gate. This game doesn't feel like a spiritual successor to Baldur's Gate. It looks like one, but it doesn't feel like one. They have failed to meet their design goal, which means that the project needs to be salvaged. We were promised a spiritual successor to the IE games, not Josh Sawyer's Dream RPG. At the moment even Dragon Age: Origins is more of a spiritual successor to the IE games than Pillars of Eternity is. And that is just really, really sad when I think about how this game was marketed during the Kickstarter.
  9. The suggestions make sense of course, i'm just wondering why Obsidian couldn't figure this out themselves. It isn't complicated or anything.
  10. Not having a go but it's not strength. Its might. As in magical Might, mental might, physical might, strength of your healing....basically being mighty.... which doesn't always mean how well you swing a sword. The others are then based around ... I also like how raising your character's might attribute makes bullets and arrows more mighty by defying the laws of physics. They should call it super mysterious magical damage multiplier.
  11. Sawyer implied early on in one of these debates it *was* something that could be changed late in development (how late is something I could only guess) - Good find. I would say there definitely is hope, but Sawyer considers combat XP to be "degenerate gameplay", not to mention that he has insulted us for wanting combat XP (or similar mechanic) a few times. What I am trying to say is that he is firmly convinced that the current system is perfect. But I dunno, let's see what happens and not give up hope. Maybe Feargus will finally put his foot down or maybe Sawyer will finally realise that there actually is a problem.

  13. Maybe it's an honest observation of your character, Helm? But no, it couldn't be that! After all, you are perfect. So, am I your new victim? Have you had enough of insulting and attacking Stun on a personal level? Take a long walk if you need to vent your aggression, bro.
  14. I normally don't respond to this sort of thing, but... really, Helm. You're one of the most abrasive and divisive posters on these forums. Getting all pious about how bad it is that the community is split is a bit rich, frankly. If you want us all to be a big happy family, then :roots in cliché bag: be the change you want to see. Uh, oh, here come the personal insults again. I should have known that you would never change. But yeah, just completely deny that there is a lot of controversy and feuding going on, if that makes you feel happy.
  15. But, but, how do you improve your Rogue's lockpicking skill by harvesting potatos for XP? xD
  16. If he didn't mean it in a negative way towards those who want some change, then I sincerely apologize to C2B. Though it certainly sounded like he said that we don't matter. As for Obsidian's reputation, well if this game fails, it will hurt their reputation in my eyes, especially if it turns out that the game failed because of the problems they were warned about and they chose to ignore, early in the development. Same here. To be honest, we hard-core rpg fans are in sort of "Minority" these days. It's somewhat a "miracle" that PoE get so much love and trust. But it also means it would be unwise to divide the fan base among such an important aspects of design. We still want to see the expansion and the sequel going on. If the project fail to earn most of its supporters, the vision of the project won't be bright. I wouldn't say we oldschool RPG fans are a minority, Divinity: Original Sin is a great RPG and is selling like hotcakes. I agree that it is a shame that two or three controversial design decisions have split the community into feuding factions. Hopefully Obsidian listens to the fans like Larian and Inxile did during their betas. I don't think it will happen though, because Sawyer seems to be very bullheaded when it comes to changing core mechanics of his design.
  17. I believe this is what Obsidian was originally planning. But then the critters wouldn't drop any crafting materials because the crafting system wouldn't support it, which would make combat even more pointless than it already is.
  18. In case someone thought I was speaking in jest. I admire Indira's blunt honesty. The behaviour of kill-xp proponents makes so much more sense when you realize you aren't having a serious discussion. You are talking to someone that wants their fix. Dude, part of the appeal of RPGs is the sense of constant progression. When you only give out XP for very specific things, in very large chunks, you are effectively breaking a core pillar of the gameplay experience. Does this mean kill xp is the only way to make the game enjoyable? Hell no. Does this mean more granular xp rewards from varied, not necessarily quest-related activities would improve the game? Hell yes. Also, please refrain from creating an unnecessarily hostile forum atmosphere. Having to wade through pages of screaming matches is draining, and eventually the only people who'll bother participating in the discussion will be the ones who have nothing to add but even more noise. Are you turning too?
  19. I'm a proponent of combat XP, C2B.
  20. Yes... I can feel your anger Give into your feelings, let the XP flow through you Heheheh
  21. Yes, it is terrible. The design is even worse than in Dragon Age 2, and that is saying a lot. The design of the game at its core is really bad and needs to be salvaged.
  22. Oh yes the old "choices are inherently good so more choices is always better" chestnut. As wrong now as ever. Oh good God. Is there some secret contest currently going on in this Forum to see who can miss points more efficiently? Ok, lets take this nice and slow and include all the context. Developer A: Ok Guys. We're working on a game. This game will be an RPG. Our vision is that this game should be about choices, consequences, and ongoing character development. It should reward role playing and using different play styles. Developer B: But how should we hand out XP for a game like this? We know from experience that if we focus exclusively on rewarding players for killing stuff, then this will result in Killing-Stuff becoming the primary play style, thus ruining the stated vision. Developer C: Good point, Mr. B! I suggest we reward both violent solutions and non-violent solutions. That way the player feels like he has a real, meaningful, choice as to whether he should kill that pack of lions that's blocking a dungeon entrance, Or throw meat at them as a diversion, Or Charm them with a spell, or sneak around them and find another dungeon entrance. Developer B: Agreed. Developer A: It's settled then. We will remove Xp rewards for kills! Developer B: Huh? Developer C: Er... what? LOL I wonder who Developer A is... hmmmmm....... xD
  23. Somebody email this to Josh please (and Feargus too, just to be sure).
  24. Still not clear what point you're trying to make as I'm not going out of my way to kill lions, beetles, or spiders. Would you care to make it more explicit rather than trying to be clever with your sarcasm? I'm not being sarcastic. You wrote that you need a discentive to prevent yourself from partaking in "degenerate gameplay" like going on murder sprees for every last drop of XP and items. Just wanted to say that you won't take a reputation or alignment hit for killing the extremely hostile spiders, beetles or lions in PoE, so there is no discentive to prevent you from relentlessy killing all of those critters for their bits... other than the fact that it is pointless, but as you wrote, that didn't stop you from killing everything in BG either.
  25. You won't take a reputation or alignment hit for killing the extremely hostile spiders and beetles (Lions too IIRC) in PoE either... But oh well, if you say so. Hopefully you don't participate in more "degenerate behavior" and go on a killing spree to collect beetle bits (for crafting) in PoE.
