When you defeat another ship, do you just get some randomized loot, or do you get the entire ship that may be an upgrade to whatever your current ship is? Also, if it "sinks" do you get nothing?

What do NPC's do after they have executed a command? Meaning, say I fire off a Magic Missile, then the "recovery" time kicks in, then what happens? Does the NPC revert to auto-attacking with whatever weapon is equipped or do they just stand there waiting for the next command from the player?
