Heh, nah. The game forces you to either join an alliance or make your own, I just forgot to set mine to "invite only" so lots of new players jumped aboard. I dont mind, but since Im the "Admiral" of the alliance I dont want to have to do anything to support it.

Fun game, it really makes me lose track of time. Probably too many quests and grindy for most around here though. Also, I apparently forgot to set my alliance to "private" and 31 people joined while I wasn't looking.

That's 99% of the reason, the other 1% is to curb usage.

It may work for other products but Ive never seen a "sin tax" (smokes, booze, weed) have the effect of slowing consumption.

Your post made this pop into my head; the Chicago Art Institute does the exact same thing! You pay to get into the museum but then you have to pay extra if you want to see the exhibits that are on tour from other museum. Now that I think of it, the Shedd Aquarium does it too...pay to get in but...*BAM*...extra if you want to see the dolphin show. Bastages.
