Have you tried a finer grit? Higher number = finer. Generally speaking, I will use a heavier grit to knock off the big mass (years of paint layers) and then switch to a finer grit for the nooks and crannies. I view this as a fantastically more expensive version of getting in the back door of the club because you know (or paid) the bouncer, instead of waiting in line with the rest.
