Agremont replied to decado's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
I'm not sure I get it. -
...OK, this be gettin' sad...y'all needs ta hike up yer skirts an' realize there be one helluva difference 'tween a bit o' shyte-slingin' 'bout game design an' such compared ta actual verbal harrassment...no one 'ere be tellin' devs that we's rapin' theys wives or throwin' kids off bridges or any such foolishness...sky ain't fallin' 'ere, save the Chicken Little routines... ...WHO LUVS YA, BABY!!... I agree. But the sad thing is that people throw those phrases about even for people speaking up against abuse. I'm not advocating sugar coating everything you say. But any discussion about abuse gets filled with phrases like that, and I'm not necessarily talking about this thread here. It is telling. I can understand if some people can't be bothered caring, but what I can't understand are people getting on the offensive towards people who do care.

There is nothing novel about this. You appear to be suggesting that stalking, harassment and death threats are unique to the Internet? Am I? Because I don't think I am. Also, the difference is that people who are victims of this outside the internet usually don't get told to shut up and take it because "it's life".
-
Except that that's not always the case. For example if you're a somewhat public person. Just look at Scooby (internet fitness dude) who had to get off the internet because of death threats. And he hadn't shared any information he shouldn't have. People found out where he lived anyway. If people really want to they will. You are really oversimplifying things and are being very dismissive. There is a point where it's past ignoring. Where it's past simple rude or derogatory comments. There's a point where it's criminal, and that should never be ignored. People can and should speak up about without getting crap from it. Simple as that. Then there's of course a good and a bad way of doing it, just like everything else. But I really cannot understand why some people find it so provocative.

Nice to read that the game is coming along nicely. Can't wait to see some gameplay. Hopefully the wait won't be to long. Oh and the wicht looks scary. I like it!

The thing is, it isn't always ignorable. Unless you're suggesting getting off the internet and never using it again, or not using various social sites that you should be able to use without harassment. I'd say the correct response varies. Some things are certainly better to ignore, others are difficult to do so. Stop getting offended and just ignore doesn't cut it as an answer in some cases.

The world is well populated with a large number of mentally unstable people. There is nothing any particular individual can do about that. When you enter the public frame of reference you are in all likelihood going to attract the attentions of a small fraction of the pool. Is this fair? I don't know. I do know that world doesn't abide by any commonly accepted standard of "fair". Requiring that this not happen is like standing with our collective hands on our hips demanding an immediate cessation of all hostilities and a return to good cinema. So we should just accept it because it happens? What a terrible attitude to have, Just because there are threatening idiots and always will be doesn't mean one shouldn't be allowed to speak up against them and their threats. But yeah lets give the victims of that sort of crap a hard time instead. Makes sense.

@ rustypup The problem is when it becomes more than just random insults. Like when people find out where their victim lives and threatens to kill their family. You just don't ignore that. That's beyond ignoring. Again, just because it's the internet doesn't mean that one should just suck it up. And I'm not talking about random youtube comments and things like that, but threats and pure harassment.
-
It's kind of hard to ignore something that you've already read. I've also never understood people who attack the ones that gets attacked. I mean really. Do you really expect me to care about someone who has expressly stated that my hobby (CRPGs, more traditional computer games) should not exist because it's too niche? The insults that the internet trolls threw at her put aside, I couldn't give a crap. The less of those vile posers in the industry trying to ruin games, the better. No, but why try and make it out like the person has got an agenda? Like there isn't a genuine reason to be upset that some one posts horrible death threats about your children "because the internet".

Update #61: In-game Art
Agremont replied to BAdler's topic in Pillars of Eternity: Announcements & News
Beautiful! Just the right look. Looks a bit odd without any character shadows, but I'm sure they'll be in the final version. Edit: I now see that there is shadows. But the characters still stick out a bit too much.- 204 replies

Cool update. Creature design i something I like to do myself (but nowhere near your level). You're doing a great job with what I've seen so far. Edit: Oh and that Cintiq.

Update #52: Monk!
Agremont replied to Darren Monahan's topic in Pillars of Eternity: Announcements & News
Good update. I'm liking the cultural concepts overall. The monk, well I've never been a fan of monks. We'll see how it plays out in-game. I realize you're probably being a bit funny about it but they clearly have breasts. Most womens breasts aren't as big as computer games will have you believe. Edit: All the characters in the concept are identical too, probably to speed up the design process. I don't think it means all characters will necessarily look exactly the same when it comes to body types in-game.- 242 replies
