  1. If you dont have a playable to show when you're two months away from release, SOMETHING ISNT RIGHT. You have other companies showing alphas, betas and even overnight builds.. but bethesda? Nothing. And thats at the largest game event in Europe.
  2. It would be nic if I had anything to quote here, but the thing is that out guys came back from Leipzig a few days ago and although Bethesda Softworks had a flashy monter, they did not show anything else from the game except a trailer. With the release of Fallout 3 just 2 months away, this is very unusual and a potential sign that the roverbial dog has been improperly buried. Are the bugs still in the bag, meaning another delay? Or is Fallout 3 perhaps so bad that Bethesda is waiting as long as they can before showing the possible stinkfest to avoid a negative pre-release buzz?
  3. The guys at Image Metrics have taken a lot of flak over this, so one of their guys made a post about it at CGtalk http://forums.cgsociety.org/showpost.php?p...mp;postcount=74 theres alot more, Id read the whole thing.
  4. The Core 2 series are VERY overcklocking-frindly so I wouldnt shell out on a few extra Hz that you can get by yourself for free. Better spend those money on a good CPU cooler. And since I do alot of heavy multithreadd crunching crunching; rendering and simulation, Id take as many cores as I could get but thats just me. I was even thinking about getting a 2xCPU motherboard so I could run dual quadcores.
  5. The face doesnt look anymore real than anything else thats been done with facial mocap the past few years. And they should have pointed out that its the face, and nothing but the face that is CG, everything else is film. And another thing; its been real quiet about that AMD Cinema 2.0 lightroom thing at SIGGRAPH 08, that a hint that they might have faked* some of their stuff aswell. * fake as in "we neglected to tell you that this part here is a photo and that this here is pre-rended and not realtime"
  6. Yeah, I havent heard anything about on CGsociety either.
  7. You can start by giving up this stupid notions that schools can teach people anything but the usual subjects. You cant make a person creative, thats an ability aquired elsewhere
  8. Hey, we're not the only ones to blame here. Every single aspect of game development has become more complex and time consuming. Nowadays you have like one guy doing nothing but work on a water shader for 3 years straight, that was unheard of ten years ago. But it might quiet down a bit because the tools required to make game assets are becomming more and more advanced and easier to use aswell. For example; today, an artist will easily spend a week laying out the UV's for a main character, and another guy 2 weeks for rigging him and preparing him for animation(a process that has to be redone for every single change in the characers design). In the future, we will have programs who will do all that automaticly in 5-10min.
  9. I looked at the clips and Lightstage is a technology used to capture really high quality moving 3D and texture/colour data at the same time. What they did here is that they managed to compress and optimize(cheat) the enourmous amount of data so that it can be played back in realtime. But they dont specify which parts fo the released material is realtime and which is pre-rendered.
  10. Oh please. Gameplay is just graphics that animate when you push a button
  11. This is what you can accomplish with an elite team of artists and an entire renderfarm: And what we're seeing in that top photo is alot more advanced, just look at the hair. Thats why I dont think its real
  12. I would seriously reconsider, GTA4 is a really, really good game. I really dislike everything rockstar has made except that one.
  13. I know two guys who were working on it, and I think the publisher just didnt want to fork out with the cash for a major promo campaign. The whole game was probably just a try to cash in on a cheap license (The Darkness is a spin-off comicbook from Witchblade, which in turn was a spinoff from Spawn) just like the last game, Riddick -something.
  14. Swede universitys and mine in particular has this kind of a problem. We get funding based on how many kids are taken in, and how many get exams. So instead of only accpting the 10 or so potential CG students each year who are actually worth a damn, they accept like 40 people, a good share of them being complete morons. This pose a number of problems 1. since most of what we do is project based with people working in groups, you get one or two idiots in every group who infallibly ****s things up 2. the morons ruin classs by asking stupid questions and hogging the teachers one-on-one time so its very difficult to get help when you need it 3. the idiots do a very good job at ruining the schools reputation in the real world. we've already been more or less blacklisted by a dutch company 4. since morons cant cope and choose to quit(which is good) we have a dropout rate of 60-80%, and our uni is one of the worst ranked in the country(which is very bad since it makes the state keen on decreasing our funding even more, since we're clearly not using it right) 5. since funding is based on the number of students, the last year projects who are really cool and needs lots of cash, wont get as much funding as the first year because 60-80% of the students will have dropped out by third year 6. if you drop out of uni(or perform badly), you wont be able to get any more study loans, so a "moron" who maybe just chose the wrong thing to study, is effectively stopped from ever getting higher education in any field ...oh, this became quite a rant, didnt it?
  15. The best game available for PS3 at the time is probably GTA4, the rest like Uncharted or Heavenly Sword are typical 3/5 games. And CoD4 is better played on the PC. ...and the tilt-sensitive controller was one dumb friggin' move, its impossible to use with precision and laggy as hell. They should have gone for a good vibration-feedback-tactile-thing instead
  16. I contrast to everyone else, I dont believe the first image is a rendered computer model. Its probably something related to realtime post-effects for film or some such. edit: our someone's just trying to pull our leg here. Could you post a link to a real article about this instead? edit2: here's a link to the real deal http://www.engadget.com/2008/06/17/amds-ci...es-you-ll-play/ I dont know where pop got the rest from, the scene with the robot in the city is the only "real deal" thing AMD displayed
  17. I blame rap music and cosmic radiation!
  18. Hellgate London could have been a decent game if they had spent their money on the actual game instead of advertising, comic books, toys, top-notch concept art and ridiculously expensive pre-rendered cinematics. Im not kidding either, they had like 5 times more people working with promotion material than they had developers.
  19. GTA 4 - I somehow just stopped playing right at the end and I havent picked it up since Assassins Creed - It was too boring and repetative Psychonauts - The art direction was sweet but the game was complete bollocks. Tim Schaffer must have left his brain at his office when he quit Lucasarts. Every total war game - When you've made it over the difficult first half of a campaign, its just too easy. Theres no point in continuing because you cant be beaten Oblivion - Who has the friggin' energy to finish that game? I mean really, I havent heard of ANYONE finishing it. Gothic2 - mkreku claimed it was so amazing that I played it all the way to the island of the big evil boss, hoping that it would become good, but it never did so i stopped
  20. SLi is overrated, IMO. Im running it at the moment with dual 7800GTX and I definently prefer a single powerful card instead. The nvidia 200-series seem like the best choice at the moment, the new ATI's run way too hot and are thus unrealiable and have a short lifespan 3 reasons why you shouldnt get SLi or dual cards like the 9800GX2 1. the performance increase is only about 20% and only noticeable in high resolutions 1920x1200 and beyond 2. the cards only use the memory of the primary card, thus 2x512mb = 1x512mb 3. you cant use more than one screen with SLi
  21. Scientology isnt really a religion though, more like a very strange social club.
  22. Ive ventured beyond the veil many times, but /b/ is a place even i find too retarded to visit. edit: well, ok... but I dont post anything
  23. As long as there's a level cap, and the levelling up is properly balanced, a classless system doesn't turn all characters into jacks-of-all-trades. Yeah, exactly. A free system just gives the player alot more options when creating and levelling his character. Some builds can be quite general, some specialised, some effective others not so effective. I grew up with classless pnp rpgs and its never been a problem.
  24. I dont see any reason to use a class-based system in a modern RPG. Its residue from the old days of barbarian/wizard/thief boardgames, and only serve to restrict player freedom.
