Anime, the eternal Jettokōsutā
It's a different kind of weird, especially once season 2 starts. I don't know how to describe it without spoilers, but it's more funny than depressing.

Burger King having good food is the most unbelievable claim in this thread.

Kinda weird that Cubans struggling against austerity and the police has to be turned into what some geriatric expats think about healthcare in a place they haven't been to in decades and some instagram account's posts.

It's a mistake to blame the present hyper-inflation solely on the embargo (covid and day zero are bigger factors), but acting as if it has no effect is equally asinine. Even if Cuba imported nothing from the US, securing investment would be significantly easier if the embargo was not in place. Freedom bombs lmao

Well I ended up watching CGI anthropomorphized horny teenage animals aka Beastars. It's very weird and apparently there is a ghost now.

Well at the very least you'd have to drop the embargo first. I think a lot of people would be disappointed to have a bunch of angry Cubans come over because big parts of the protests are opposition to the austerity measures by the Cuban government during the pandemic, systematic racism against black Cubans, and police brutality. Something tells me the US doesn't quite have all that sorted out, and the same folks supporting Cubans now would be calling for the military to put them down if they tried to do the same things here.

The All-Things Cinema thread
I guess for me it was Judas and the Black Messiah, but I don't think that's really the same thing as Star Wars or a Disney flick. I dunno, I was drug to see The Rise of Skywalker (which just like the force awakens, was a remake of one of the original trilogy but dumber) so I guess that's it. Eh, I'm not really interested in that sort of stuff anymore and when I am I'll just watch some silly cartoons, maybe I'm just turning into a curmudgeonly old man prematurely because the pandemic aged me over 20 years.

You shouldn't ask questions you don't want the answers to. Like Keyrock, I've pretty much become hostile to CGI. I'll get my ****ty rendering from my videogames, thank you very much.

So far I like it. Lt. Col. DIO really does seem like a nice guy and doesn't yell much. The characters seem to be more grounded than other animes, hell most of them seem pretty normal and mostly concerned with getting by in a post-war society which is pretty close to slice of life. I think the show has been a nice refresh after AoT's mix of melodrama and action. I'll see how it goes and try to watch the OVA after episode 4. And speaking of DIO...

I know! This guy is supposed to be nice, but you just expect something like this: instead of him being nice to his dead friend's.... whatever Violet was to him.

If only calling it what it is was a fix. My understanding is that rubber bullets are designed to be shot at the ground and bounced towards crowds to reduce the amount of force. If you shoot directly at people, as was the case over the 2020 summer in the US, you end up with a lot of disfigurement and some death. I guess it's a question of whether the police are doing it intentionally or just don't read the manual, and then another question if that makes a difference.

Violet Evergarden episode 1. Pretty good, but I can't help but hear Hodgins as DIO and expect him to reject his humanity or ask some old lady what it means to live.

@majestic Kill la Kill sure was a ride wasn't it? I remember watching it a few years ago and thinking that it was really good or borderline perv, and now I think it's both.

A nation....in space! Realistically genocide (including population control and cultural erasure) would be a very intensive process in terms of manpower and resources. You'd pretty much need a massive efficiency booster (like robots, automation, etc.) along with the active participation of the people not being targeted (yet) to pull it off. It's realistic in the sense as most sci-fi stuff can be, but similarly unlikely to happen.

https://www.brennancenter.org/our-work/analysis-opinion/anti-protest-laws-threaten-indigenous-and-climate-movements The push to clamp down on pipeline protests isn't new, but it is really troubling. A lot of people are going to end up in jail for protesting, regardless if it's peaceful or not. Climate news is almost always worse than expected, so I guess it's fitting that it also applies to legal issues. But I guess the real threats to free speech are social media bans, college Republicans not having sex, and schools teaching the history of segregation. Prison time can't compare to your tinder match thinking you're too obnoxious to date. There's a level of irony that people who spent decades saying everything was a slippery slope to the government seizing control of our lives want the government to seize control of our lives so they can post slurs on twitter.

If he didn't solve a rubik's cube only to break it, then the OVA monkey is a let down.
