I remember wanting Environmental Effects a lot in Pillars of Eternity (Basically, if it's raining, it'd affect characters & monsters stats, night would give less vision, snow would give status effects etc.), so I thought I'd brainstorm the idea again. After reading this (Sawyer's Tumblr), which is just a tiny piece but is part of the same category: "In our Fig trailer, you may notice a shot around the 2:40 mark where barrels of gunpowder next to Pallegina explode. Only a Fire effect will ignite them, causing them to explode within a few seconds, but a Water effect can counter that." My mind began to spin and escalate as it does. I understand that Sawyer is talking a bit about counters here, but he's also somewhat leaving it open to interpret that "There might be more interactive objects that does stuff". Although, exploding barrels are pretty common in top-down Isometric or aRPG games though, but it still made me wonder about the next couple of steps. A) In Deadfire we're going to be sailing a bit from location to location, at least in the World Map Travel interface (Perhaps never fully realized in 3D). But will there be Random Encounters? (I'm thinking Heroes of Might & Magic 3 Sea Battles in concept) B) Does that mean there could be Random Environmental Events occurring as well? I.E: You Travel from A to B, Random Encounter (Pirates) and before entering the Isometric view and doing the battle, also rolling for Environmental Effect (Is it a calm sea/no effect? Storm/Lightning strikes & rain? Strong winds & big waves?) I'm wondering because it could be pretty epic! Fight a ship battle and have random lightning strikes hit around you, or waves battering the ship and being able to push enemies into trajectory paths and washing them over board. Would it also mean that you could sink an enemy ship with a couple of well placed fireballs? Or are ships enchanted with magical protection? There could also be simple statistical changes. If it's raining, Water spells are stronger, but your characters could also be slower (depending on what gear they were, Cloth gets soaked and heavy making characters way slower, and metal is mostly unaffected). During storms, metal would be a conduit and plate wearers would have a higher chance of getting hit by lightning. In cold/snow, cloth would be most unaffected, and the rest would get a slow effect (Fire aura's that give fire effect, resistance or fire weapons, would nullify cold effects). Furthermore, with Barrels that Explode. Would it mean we can set a patch of grass on fire? Trees? Does a forest area enhance or affect Fire spell durations or effects? Does an open sea or rainy (water) area effect the power of Water spells? Would Lightning spells deal even more damage to a character that is soaked in water? Would Fire dry a character making Earth spells more effective? If my ally is Entangled in vines/roots (by some spell), could I use a light Fire spell to burn the roots and free my ally without dealing damage to them? If Weather would or could be a thing in Deadfire, could it be visualized on the World Map Interface? (Clouds/Weather visuals that move as you move, allowing the Player to see and plan their movements accordingly, to either avoid a storm or head straight into it). Which brings me to my final question and brainstorm: Is the World Map going to be animated or have animated visuals in some sort of way? (I.E. when you move on the world map, would/could there be Caravans that move at the same time, Bandits/Monsters, Weather effects etc.). This is pretty much opposite of "Random Encounters", because you'd be able to see all potential encounters on the World Map and plan your movements accordingly. A Turn-Based Board game factor pretty much. Questions/TL;DR: - Are exploding barrels the only interactive environmental object? (Specifically, in combat. Can boats be set on fire as well? If not, there should be a Wizard NPC Ship Role/Profession that acts as some sort of "Hull Shielder", "Hull Barrier Mage", or "Hull Enchanter" dude. Like how "First Mate" is a profession~ for immersion and countering the "Why can't I blow up that boat/why doesn't it catch fire!?"-Player reaction) - Will there be random encounters? - Will there be random environmental effects? (Weather) - Is the World Map Interface going to be animated or have "animated" objects in any way? (I.E. Turn-Based World Map Board Game) EDIT: I realize I'm excited and have to read up a bit more than I have found this on the Fig page: "Dynamic Weather In addition to the rich and diverse environments, Pillars II will feature intense and immersive dynamic weather. Rains, fierce winds and sandstorms are among the harsher conditions that are commonplace in Deadfire. You’ll even hear the rain pounding on the roof when you go inside." That could mean "It'll affect your party mechanically", right? (It can also just mean "It's going to be atmospheric", I suppose)

Posted in wrong thread pretty much: This would mean that we're starting with a watcher that was capable of killing Adra Dragon. Which means there's pretty much no threat in the world that would be able to touch the protagonist. ------------------------------ Or put on display in Caed Nua, and when the titan revives and rises lots of it falls down the pit it came from. Most of the treasury falling down the drain, making the Lord of Caed Nua pretty much broke, and depending on what happens in Dyrwood at this time, I can only expect that it becomes so chaotic that everyone has to flee in desperation or they're going to be squished. EDIT: Furthermore, this response (barrels of gundpowder exploding) to melnorme pretty much states that the environment may be a threat as well (and thinking about it, sailing, piracy, potential ship combat etc.) pretty much tells us one thing that makes sense: The Watcher is pretty much a noob at sailing = Level 1. What if we could start at Level 16, just for the prologue segment of Eothas rebirthing, and then escaping to sea and become Level 1. I'm getting some sort of WarCraft III: The Frozen Throne, Undead Campaign, vibes here (Arthas going down 1 level every map, because Sylvanas shoots him with a weakening arrow).
-
In Deadfire, what happens to an Adra Dragon that gets touched by Eothas rebirth? Not to mention all new areas and such, no threats there? Were there no threats in Baldur's Gate 2? Level 1 is just a mechanical number. But it does spark the question what sort of "power level" characters will be equivalent of. Is it Level 5? Level 10? Or is it just a narrative "level drain"? Is Deadfire a High-Level Campaign in concept? EDIT: Wrong thread really, going to post in the other one.
-
What if Level 1 in Deadfire is like the equivalent of Level 12 then? You get to start with X amount of Ability and Talent points? Mages/Druids/Priests get a couple of levels in their respective schools? Perhaps the spell system is more transformative and flexible (like Tyranny), allowing you to mix and combine components, basically giving you room to cast a myriad of different spells at Level 1? And Attributes starting at a higher value as well, or getting more points at character creation, perhaps? If they go the Tyranny route of character creation ("Conquest"-esque) they would probably reward several abilities and such as you go forward.
-
I absolutely loved the arrifact and spell mechanics in Tyranny. Leveling up/Experience system as well. Character creation.. choices! These points were most memorable and most intruiging (EDIT: Story was awesome, of course, just addressing mechanical tidbits here). Translating the skill, artifact, faction, and spell system into PoE2 would be a welcome addition in my book. But instead of finding components for spells in the world and shops, maybe get some choices when you level up? Could a spell system be applied to "techniques" as well? (Knockdown AoE, duration, power, knockback etc.) The latter could allow the player to develop unique combat techniques for all their characters (how Tyranny does spells), instead of picking from a list when leveling up how PoE does it).

Game not received
Osvir replied to Sito92's topic in Lords of the Eastern Reach: Speculation & Discussion
Seeing it pop up in several areas Germany of Europe probably means "Soon". They might have distribution in Germany, so then we'll probably see out lying countries getting it in a week or two? Maybe? Hopefully? :D -
I can't speak for Odysseus, but I'm having tons of fun with it. I'm also quite enjoying it. So far the game hasn't tried to force me into grouping with others, I just hope that it stays that way and that they don't pull a GW2 on me by making the last quest in the "main storyline" a "group quest". That was a really nasty thing to do of the GW2 devs, seriously. I thought the game just got better after the Main Quest. Granted, I'm kind of invested at this point (I've cleared a lot, almost max crafting skills). I've also soloed 99% of the content thus far. Waiting with PvP and grouped content until much, much later. What faction/alliance/character are you playing? (I'm Daggerfall Covenant, Redguard Templar, that I've built into a jack-of-all trades type character) @Division: I ignored the fast travel option almost completely (once or twice) for the single player content. And I played completionist (collected everything, did all side-missions). I loved it, and such a beautiful game. Lots of wasted hours (yet meaningful, in an immersing and personal sense) that I spent running the streets of Manhattan The only thing I didn't appreciate was the bullet sponging. Now, if it had been a bit more Dark Souls hardcore, that would've certainly been something and would've made exploring much more challenging and much more appreciated when overcoming obstacles. Speaking of appreciation, I think that exploration and viewing things is up to you. If you are distracted by the compass or the next objective you're not stopping and looking around or immersing yourself. Of course, some games just aren't good at it (a lot of open world games, lots of the GTA games are "Go to X point") and Dragon Age: Inquisition certainly felt that way too. In ESO I found a note on a small isle, "Isle of Contemplation", and it made me think, stop, and look around at my surroundings. The trees, the leaves, the water, the bench, and just think about life for a moment before I continued on on my journey in the game. It was one of those memorable moments you get once in a while in great video game experiences. Nothing fancy, just something small and insignificant really, but in some personal way meaningful. Then again, I've done that a couple of times in ESO, just appreciating the landscapes and the surroundings from time to time (the outdoors, the dungeons are kind of generic and streamlined). I guess I'm trying to say "game experiences are subjective", you give your own meaning to your own actions. And in my opinion, a positive meaning in the playground makes it more fun to play in it. If I think it's boring to build sand castles maybe I should look for another thing to build in the sandbox, or perhaps I should start or try to develop a different mindset about sand castles ;P EDIT: Speaking of Division, and staying on topic. Looking forward to the Survival add-on as well as the Underground one. Especially the Survival DLC, as that's something I'm curious about in the Division world space (what will vandals, spoiled food etc. gives a sense of urgency that the Division world building has been lacking. How do people survive, wouldn't they starve in the quarantined zone? Eventually? That DLC seems to cut off the agents in some, thus far, unknown zone).

E3 :D was up all night then work, watching Bethesda. Some thoughts (I saw Sony's and Bethesda's press conferences, and skimmed through a recording of Microsoft's): - Dishonored 2, looks amazing, I loved the first one (and finished it three times) so I'll dig my way into this one as well. Probably going Corvo to continue the trend. - Skyrim Special Edition, no hype for it, I was hoping for a surprise reveal of Bethesda hiring the Skywind crew and "remastering" Morrowind (Honestly was hoping for either Skyrim Expansion for Elder Scrolls Online or Elder Scrolls VI, but the rumors and confirmation from Bethesda was that they were making a remaster of sorts). Maybe next year. I'll be getting this one for free anyways (If you own the Legendary Edition you'll get the Special Edition). - Days Gone looks fantastic, looks like a proper zombie horde game. - State of Decay 2 was neat to see, but too soon to say anything about it. - Final Fantasy XV I'm looking forward too, still. Was a bit funny too see in the Microsoft live stage demo, a bit cringy and face-palming moments. Why did they pick the titan fight for live demo? xD Noctis was being rekt. Sony's Final Fantasy XV presentation was better, where they were just showing tons of different clips, and the Sony VR experience. - I like what Microsoft is doing with Xbox One and Windows 10, might be risky but also a big game changer (Cross-platform play and titles that release on PC also release on Xbox One, great stuff! Even though I'm not an Xbox One player that's a great move and promotes inclusivity). - Death Stranding has my interest, because Kojima, and Norman Reedus is a great actor. I wonder what it is? Post-apocalyptic? Questioning our way of life in the modern age? Whales and fish and oil? Destroying the waters? 5 figures in the sky, gods? Devils? The elite? The 5%? I don't know. But it looks like Kojima is making something artistic, what it is we'll probably not learn until next E3, probably. - No Kingdom Hearts 3. Boo! - Resident Evil 7. Woot! And it actually looks intruiging for once?? Time to get a PS4! Well... soon-ish. That's 3 titles now (Final Fantasy XV, Kingdom Hearts 3, Resident Evil 7). - God of War, Norse Mythology. Awesome. Don't know what to say. QTE-fest coming back, but also the powerful and hack-slashing plot of Kratos. I wonder if Kratos is putting down the hatchet and letting his son take over? Could be one of those stories where Kratos dies in the prologue and then "20 years later" type of deals and you get to play as his son. Possibly? - Horizon Zero Dawn looks awesome too. But that's, what, 5-6 new open world titles? Who has time for that? Feels like I'll have to pick the one most appealing to me and the rest will either disappear into history or into a game library backlog. Hmm.... *peers into wallet* ... maaaaybeeee...... - Mass Effect: Andromeda. Sweet! Looking forward to actually see something tangible from it. I already played the trilogy so I don't see any reason not to continue the trend.

Does this mean a step closer to Darklands 2*!?!? ;D * Well, spiritual successor I guess. -
And his teammates are flaming in /All chat because he's KSing. The other team is more unified and balanced. Late-game will be hard. Oh gosh... why do I want to see a Lee Sin (or other jungler) mock-up with Trumps head? xD
-
If you go Support in Bot lane and you see the enemy jungler on the minimap but you don't ping or warn, then it's pretty much your fault if your toplane gets owned. Thing is, everybody is pingin "Danger! Danger!" when it comes to Trump. Either it is an elaborate plan, or Trump is a terrible jungler.

The supplies mechanic is bad
Osvir replied to Arnegar's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
Most roguelikes I've played (Nethack, DCSS, ADOM, ToME, Brogue, Sil) highly encourage this. They also have a hunger system which prevents you from camping/farming a safe spot by forcing you to explore for food. Now that I think about it the only roguelike I've played that didn't have such a system is DoomRL. Which is why it's horribly broken. As far as CRPGs go there's at least Neverwinter Nights for "rest whenever wherever with no penalties". At least the Infinity Engine games had random ambushes. That sounds like a fantastic idea. Too bad food/hunger isn't all that important in Pillars of Eternity. But it sounds like this is the sort of mechanic/function that would work amazingly well with a Rest Mechanic seen in PoE and BG of old, and counter the accessible abuse that follows. "You need to eat, so you can't rest" limitations~ Heck, even limit one from returning to town if you haven't rested and/or eaten well enough, e.g. "You can not return to town at this time. You need to eat and sleep" This would require some better scavenging and loot mechanics though (Being able to find more food and camping supplies on every map, in the wilderness, chopping up a wooden table, finding tinder etc. etc. sacrificing a companion for cannibalism, those Xaurips looks delicious~ etc. etc. ) -

I did ask Karkarov for help reading through it, he also editted and added some words to it too credit where it is due. Did not think I would, was anticipating to read someone else's name but instead "O_O" -
A Gladiator Pit? Test out your Adventurers before letting them join your band? Get the choice: A) Stand in the audience (Prospecting potential champions for your party). Be in control of the gladiator as the fight begins (permadeath, no consequences). B) Sign up yourself. Maybe? I voted for "I don't care either way", but I think I lean a bit more towards thinking it could be cool and fun too (I care slightly, but not very much)

Third Expansion
Osvir replied to cwi87's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
Set sails indeed.... off to the islands of Rautaui! :D And your stronghold being.... a Ship! (Don't remember who suggested this but it was someone on this forum) EDIT: As for a Pillars of Eternity 2 High-Level Campaign (Some brainstorming): A) Continue with the "Watcher", now a Duke or Lord with troops and soldiers under his/her command. Hire low-level and mid-level adventurers to conquer the world. A Jagged Alliance, Battle Brothers, XCOM, Real time or Turn Based RPG hybrid. That could accomodate both the feeling of "The Watcher is really powerful now" and getting the Low-Level and Mid-Level campaign. Basically a Low-Level AND High-Level Campaign in one game. Face an army with your army, and defeat the leader of that army with the Watcher in a duel. Hmm.... that... that might just work. 1) You are a Pirate Lord, Captain of the Ship. 2) Your hirelings, adventurers, and companions, destroying the enemy opposition... 3) ... and you dueling against the enemy captain in the end. Your hirelings could scout islands (under your control), search for treasure and such, and when they encounter a big enough encounter, your character steps in to deal with it. I could see it working a little bit like the Stronghold missions, press a button to send scouts or patrols to various locations, and after X amount of in-game time you get a notification "We found something!" and then you get to control your High-Level group to deal with it (and skip all the thrash mobs along the way, go straight to the encounter/event). B) Play as an entirely new character.... or even a Dual- or Twin-Campaign~ basically, either "Start New Game" as a new character, with new beginnings, having his/her own adventures going from Point B to Point A, or continue with a Watcher character who is going the typical Point A to Point B. This solution would give Players who want a new character, a new character, and it'd also give Players who want to continue with the Watcher, to continue. This sounds not like the game, I want PoE 2 to be. Not in the slightest. I hope, nothing of this will come true. Keep it oldschool. Also, there is the Risen-Franchise for those, who can't get enough of Pirates of the Carribean in their CRPG. Rauatai http://pillarsofeternity.gamepedia.com/Rauatai Aumaua (20'000 year old culture of exploring+settling) http://pillarsofeternity.gamepedia.com/Aumaua *shrug* With or without piracy/captain/my suggestion/wish, this area is part of the Eora world (the one Pillars of Eternity is set in) and I think it's an interesring location that I want to explore further. Furthermore, Kana Rua is one of my fav companions, and would like to companion again, and also see his fate :D -

If Heroes of the Storm had no level ups and was FPS, no critters nor "nexus", would it be a TF clone too? Edit: But I might be mistaken ofc, googled "MOBA" for a better definition and it say "a.k.a. ARTS, action real time strategy". I suppose that adheres to top-down control and typical strategy game elements. TF has classes (5 or 6?). Overwatch is a bit of a hybrid then, between typical FPS, but also Heroes/Champions a la DotA, LoL, HotS, SMITE~ No RPG elements but abilities and Ultimates. Fast paced action.

I forgot one important point to make in my previous post: 3) DON'T READ OR ENGAGE IN FORUM ACTIVITY WHILE PLAYING! (E.g. Real life stuff) That has crushed several of my re-runs of Pillars of Eternity actually (between 1.0 and 2.0). My very first run I ignored the forums, stayed away from it completely. But then I started new games with new characters and I played a little bit. Got pretty far too with a solo character. Then I jumped into the forums, and my attention became diverted and split up. This is subjective though, I couldn't handle juggling forum activity (talking/reading and paying attention here, and at the same time paying attention to the in-game world). If I engage in a discussion here and at the same time play in Defiance Bay, and I recall someone on the forums talking about Defiance Bay, or I had talked about Defiance Bay, I can easily get thrown "out of" the attention and the game starts to look more and more objective and less immersive. Metaphorically: Which soccer star goes onto the playing field thinking about doing their laundry or dishes? No one. All they're thinking about is doing the right passes, and get the ball into the net to score points. That's kind of how I am when I play games. Parallelly, if I'm fighting a story encounter or reading/listening to a questline in-game, laundry or dishes shouldn't be on my mind. So I guess this point #3 is also "Do your chores BEFORE you play" @Torment Discussion: Just adding some cents. I had a good first impression. I played just for about 1 hour before the Beta completely bugged out on me and freezed, but it's interesting and such. I should get on to it, I think it's been updated but... I think I'll wait a while longer, personally. Definately promising the Turn-Based sections felt a wee bit, how to say... I wasn't quite used to it. Felt a lil bit Temple of Elemental Evil~ish (prettier but rougher).

Overwatch Closed Beta. BOOOM! This MOBA will rockz yourz zockz. It's freaking awesome. Feels like it's very early though, and matches go super fast but it is also super fun. It's good. Really guuuuud. Still hanging onto TESO, leisurely and casually. Not so much lately been working too much but it's still there (Level 40-41 last time I played~). I've finished 3-4 regions~ Also working my way through early early game Pillars of Eternity again with a Cipher. Makes me want to be unemployed again so I can just crush it, because my work schedule is crazy I barely get any time into it T-T Maybe I should ask for a couple of days of vacation....

^What Undecaf said. Continuing on that thread: Why Fallout, what's the underlying appeal? The IP itself, or simply a dystopian/post-apocalyptic world? Because it doesn't have to be Fallout if it's the latter.
-
That's your problem. Literally. Mind you, I don't mean to sound rude. Just frank/honest. I believe you are making an active (potentially a passive or sub-conscious) choice. There's a TL;DR ("Too Long; Didn't Read" a.k.a. "In Short" or "Summary of Post") at the bottom. I understand your problem tho. I've been going through the same journey for a lot of games throughout the ages. Even NEO Scavenger. Darkest Dungeon. TES. Yes, even Pillars of Eternity. But it hasn't been because "Oh this game sucks so much", it has mostly been because of my own motivation is -100% to play any game and I'm just trying to pass time because I'm in a bored state of mind. Either I'm trying to play something when I should be doing something else, or just unconveniently bad timing. Or I can overcome this state with some willpower and forget I was bored in the first place (usually takes some mental work/mantra). Games like Pillars of Eternity aren't really games to pass time with, they're experiences~ for the lack of a better word. It took me near 10 years to play and finish Baldur's Gate. I pirated it first because it was #1 on RPG lists. Then I bought a hard copy. I modded it (30 gb worth of mods), played with a friend and then I started to see the underlying charm and history of it. Even the culture of D&D dawned on me, and I plowed through it like no tomorrow and I was amazed by it. Even bought the Enhanced Editions as well (sentimental value/collection, even if it is nothing but digital bytes). Like I've said in similar threads like this one. Take your time. Figure out a cool concept for a character, perhaps read a book or some fanfic to get inspired. Invest and engage some time into Your Character. Talk to someone close to you about this cool character, get feedback, modify it etc. etc. I have a friend who dump a lot of time into games creating characters, but 30-60 minutes in he drops the game and starts all over because he wasn't satisfied with the direction or choices he made (he usually likes the game a lot but he messes up the character so he starts all over and over... I do too in a lot of RPG's. It can take a couple of trial characters before I get "The One"). When you've done the character, take a moment and decide "I'm going to read every word and every line in the game, and listen to what they say" without skipping ahead. Personally, this is usually the main reason why I lose a lot of interest in a lot of games (Skipping dialogue), because a game such as Pillars of Eternity (RPG's in general really) can get kind of dull if you're not...: A) ... using your brain/thinking B) ... paying attention/reading* Because simply brawling over and over and fighting trash mob after thrash mob with the seldom harder encounter (boss or similar) makes most games mundane and repetitive. It can easily become "work", and this is something that video games are designed to escape from, are they not? I do repetetive tasks every single day at work, walking back and forth, doing the same thing over and over for months/weeks and you have to stay positive (yes, I'm reflecting and comparing with work). If I were to get home and do the same thing over and over again, I'd get depressed, not very motivated to leisurely escape reality for a couple of hours, and I wouldn't enjoy my free time very much. TL;DR: 1) Figure out a cool character concept. What does your character look like (in your mind's eye)? Or perhaps you can google a cool portrait you like and implement it into the game? What's his/her name? Where do he/she come from? What did he/she do before? Etc. etc. Mind you that your character is going to be Level 1 so don't go for "DESTROYER OF GODS!!!" (unless, of course, you cheat with console commands and give your character Max Level right away). 2) Decide that you're going to read every word and line in the game, before you even start playing the game, decide that you're going to pay attention. Listen to the voice acting. Pay attention to details. Focus. Stay alert. Stay motivated. This is an active choice, not something that just "happens". Trust me, it becomes so much easier to keep track and enjoy what's going on. And when or if you get bored, press on, you'll feel rewarded for it later (although, that is a subjective matter). What sort of games do you enjoy and play a lot? What's your favorite story? Did you hear/read that favorite story by skipping all the pages, or did you read it and pay attention and gave yourself in to it a little bit? There you go.
