How is it a failure? History shows exactly the opposite; a resounding success. Both parties keep a watchful eye on each other, which helps significantly reduce corruption. Voters get a regular opportunity to throw out the worst of the lot, which is much more than the people get in, say, Russia, North Korea, or China.

We had a local windstorm here and lost the power a couple of times. There's nothing quite like a power outage to make you realize how dependent you've become on electricity. There was nothing to do but read a book and take a walk.

I have this alternate hypothesis that a sufficiently advanced civilization would know how to stir the helium ashes at the stellar core and extend the lifespan of their star by many billions of years. I've tried to conjecture how they might do it, and I suspect it would involve using enormous magnetic fields to generate a deep and powerful vortex at the stellar poles. Perhaps one day we'll spot some alien civilization manipulating their star in this way.
