Could you point me to a game where the females are like strippers and the males are like Edward from Twilight? It is for educational purposes in gender class, of course. Well for the women that's easy just look at Soul Calibur 5 as for the men well...(might be NSFW) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9hcElGydzb8 :D As for the argument as to why women should be sensibly dressed (player characters in particular) Is that it's hard me personally to take my own character seriously if she is dressed inappropriately. Often I don't have a problem with other women in the game being scantily clad as long as my character isn't dressed like a stripper. Other women in that universe can do what the hell they like. I play my Borderlands 2 character quite happily without sneering at Moxxi everytime I go in her bar.

If the majority of the demographic is white that means racism is allowed since sexism is okay when the majority are men. /sarcasm I don't want my female playable characters to look like strippers just as I'm sure you don't want your male playable characters to look like Edward from Twilight. I don't see why it's such an imposition. I mean you aren't going to die if a woman doesn't flash some boob at you every five minutes.

What's depressing is that these threads are hashed out again and again. Yet I'm still compelled to say something because of the ignorance shown by some of the presumably male posters. I've been gaming since 1984, I'm female and I think I have a right to request that my sex is treated with some measure of dignity in video games. That said I'm sure Obsidian won't cave to the idiots who want pandering eye candy.

I was actually thinking about this while playing Skyrim. The Dwemer race turned away from the very obviously existing gods and embraced logic and reason. I thought that was a cool idea in a world where gods and Daedric princes are very active in mortal affairs. It would be nice to to see something similar in a world which is obviously experiencing a transition in technology (flintlocks). Tim Cain is the man for this I think

The reason they do that is because they themselves would only stand up for women's rights is if they got sex so they project that reason onto more forward thinking men. It's called Malignant Narcissism.

This has been hashed out already but as a woman I definitely don't like my playable character to be a sex object. Often I don't even mind if there are other women in the game who are overly sexy as as long as I can dress my character appropriately for what she is doing. I even bought the mechromancer dlc for borderlands 2 because the Siren didn't feel very 'me' That's my two gold coins anyway :3

It would be my dream to have a Recettear mini game within an rpg. Running a shop from things you get on your adventures hehe. I'm guessing that obsidian doesn't have the funds or the time for that though.

Please don't make assumptions about me or my friends. My friend does not "attribute have extremist views about women", she just happens to have a gaming preferences that differ from what you claim women prefer. That is because on the topic of attributes of female video game protagonists, we pretty much agree. Oh I thought you were talking about the guy I originally quoted. I don't understand why you are attacking me over this if you agree with me? I respect that your friend has different views but I doubt she wants something as vapid as the guys earlier were suggesting.

And exactly what is the point of this? To derail a thread over one sentence? I don't think I was hypocritical at all in what I said I'm pretty sure my impression of what women want in gaming protagonists is fairly accurate and not all women have the extremist views that your 'friend' attributes to them. You aren't adding anything to the discussion at all. You haven't said a single thing about what YOU want female protagonists or characters to be like. Just attacked me over semantics.

You really don't posses any reading comprehension at all, do you? I don't see how I have misunderstood what he is saying, he is disputing my points based on the fact that 'I can't speak for all women' despite the fact that I spend a lot of time playing games and being around and listening to other female gamers. It's kind of sad that you can't come up with any decent counterpoints and instead argue over how I have said it.

Absolutely. They are insular because they are a self-selected sample of the population. By which I mean (for those who don't like statistics lingo) that people tend to avoid communities they disagree with. But for a lot of people it is the only game they like. Some women want that. Some men want that, too. If that was my thesis, that is what I would have said. Your statements about what women want went quite a bit further than that. Well if you think that I'm wrong about what women want in a protagonist then you must think the majority of women want the opposite no?

Surely it's as bad to have a knee jerk reaction and say all women want to play dress up and dollies though. My experience with the communities is that they involve a lot of women. That's nothing to do with an insular view it's a fact. I like playing the Sims 3 mostly to build houses but it's not the only game I like. Some men seem to think we want to make all games like the Sims when that just isn't the case. It was said earlier generalisations are okay when they speak to a pretty blatant truth. I think they have done very well so far and I have absolute confidence that a game with Sawyer involved in it will have respect for women. However, I noticed some of the rather discouraging comments from backers in this thread I thought I would speak up. I'm, in no way, saying Obsidian need assistance on this one although I did link an article on the portrayal of women in Dishonoured earlier that I think would be helpful for the devs to read. I think New Vegas was excellent (280 hours playtime later hehe) in how it treated gender although I never was able to bring myself to work for the Legion

It may surprise you to know this but I do a lot of reading on this subject and it's not just me who has this opinion. I'm not saying this from a position of ignorance. I happen to know from being in the communities of said games that they are popular with women. I read the blogs of other women who game and participate frequently in debates on the subject. Gaming is not your bedroom. It is enjoyed by more than just you. Women play games too and we don't like being represented as mindless bimbos who fight in chainmail bikinis.

It may shock you to know that women aren't a hive mind neither are feminists Feminism isn't an 'extremist' movement. It's a movement that promotes equality between men and women. Those women may identify as feminists but they aren't they are supremacists. It's like thinking that the Westboro Baptist Church represents all Christians. I'm not sure what you are trying to say there... but my original point was women want pretty much the same power fantasy as men in games and that's why gender swap characters are popular among women. I've spent the last few nights playing Borderlands 2 with my male best mate. I'm really enjoying it. Women don't want to turn gaming into romance novellas we just want our player character to have an ounce of dignity.
