The problem with this thread is that it's almost impossible to take a stand either way. I've never actually played a RPG with regenerating health the way the original poster meant (fast, not excruciatingly slow). Instinctively it sounds wrong, but what if that's just the human nature of fearing change? I'm trying to keep an open mind until I've at least tried it, which I'm obviously going to do in Deus Ex 3.. If I could preorder that game right now, I would. That's how illogical I am when it comes to the Deus Ex franchise.

Hear hear I agree. I mean, look at women and women's rights. The reason why they were subjugated throughout history (and still now) is because they chose to accept that lifestyle. Society wasn't holding them back, they just weren't motivated and chose to let people exploit them and take advantage of them. All those activists just wasted everyone's time. Society didn't hinder their ability, and it wasn't as though there was systemic and institutional discrimination against them. For whatever reason, they just chose to sit idly by. Haha, I love this post! alanschu back in good old form

REAL MEN DON'T USE ANAESTHETICS FOR THEIR DENTAL WORK!! Because we faint like little girls whenever they try poking us with a needle.

Yeah, sure, whatever. But if you're ever interested in broadening your horizons a little, try taking a class in psychology. Read up on it a little. It's so easy to have opinions about everything, especially stuff you have no knowledge about. What's so surprising is how willing people are in spreading said uninformed opinions everywhere, even if it only makes themselves look uneducated. You can start with this: What happens when you put good people in an evil place?

I downloaded and installed the Sacred 2 demo tonight. I must say I was pleasantly surprised. Sure, it's still just a hack'n'slash but it's very polished, very slick and full of life and detail. I just wish the German developers/writers weren't so cheesy.. If anyone is interested in trying it: http://www.gamershell.com/download_33516.shtml It's 1.7 GB but you get to play for a few hours at least.

Anyone played Area 51 or Full Spectrum Warrior?
mkreku replied to mkreku's topic in Computer and Console
I also noticed that Midway has released The Suffering as a full game download: http://www.gamershell.com/download_33314.shtml Very generous, I must say. The graphics may suck a little in The Suffering, but it's a decent game nonetheless. -
Apparently the world has gone mad. Midway has released the full game Area 51 for download: http://www.gamershell.com/news_61608.html THQ has released the full game Full Spectrum Warrior for download: http://www.gamershell.com/news_61602.html Now, I know Full Spectrum Warrior is kind of a tactical game so I'm not really interested. But did anyone try Area 51? Is it worth downloading? Yes, I am so lazy I'd rather ask here first instead of just downloading it and installing it

The flow of your post, and the words used, do not indicate that you are talking about Oblivion when referring to consoles having a cap on their FPS. What are you trying to prove here? The guy says he meant Oblivion on the Xbox 360. The post may be read in any way you want, and you keep on harping on about your own interpretation of it, despite him explaining it to you? Why? What's the point?

gt? I guess you didn't "solve" Q-T-Pi's name then.

It's both true and not true. An ordinary movie at the cinema is shown in 24p (24 frames per second) and I'm pretty sure noone's complaining. But if you put someone in front of a screen switching between a white screen and a black sreen at 30 fps, that someone would probably get epilepsy. Also, everyone who's played a racing game knows what a difference it is between 30 fps and 60 fps.

I actually wish the world was a s simple as you think it is. Just a quick question: have you ever travelled outside the US (which is where I presume you live)?

I don't know, I think regenerating health can work in a RPG also. I mean, we've always had those rings of regeneration after all. I just imagine the regeneration rate to be much lower than in a FPS. I've played Halo and going from just above dead to full health takes like three seconds. A quick rate like that would probably kill any combat tactics I'd usually apply in RPG's, but it would definitely not kill the game. I guess it all depends on if you want the combat to be very FPS like (and concentrate the RPG features to other parts of the game) or if you want the game to have a more standard RPG feel in combat too.

Huh? What does the bad schedule have to do with the European expansion? Shouldn't that be "Go crappy schedule planners!"?

It used to be the way newc describes, but ATI has lowered the prices on their GPU's so much that their top end cards cost half now compared to two generations ago (two years ago)! If you buy a Radeon 4870, you can play Crysis with everything on max and 1280x1024 and 40 fps. The price/performance ratio has never been better than it is right now.

The problem with auto healing for me is that it disrupts the flow of the game. Whenever I am hit, I just take cover and stop playing. Then I sit there and stare at that health bar that's slowly creeping up to full before I continue playing. To me, that's not making the game more fun, it's making the game experience more fragmented. Health regeneration only leaves me with two choices: either I continue and die (and have to reload) or I just stop playing for whatever amoujnt of time it takes for the regeneration to finish. When I have health packs, I use them whenever I need. I don't have to wait for a regenerating health bar, the outcome is in my own hands and the game experience flows much better. That said, I've enjoyed Crysis and other regenerators before so all is not doom and gloom. I'd prefer health packs but I can live with regeneration.

Three points to start you up with: 1. Buy a good case. 2. Buy a good PSU (power unit). 3. Buy a good motherboard. Spend most of your budget on those three and you're set for a number of years. The case is something you will (almost) never have to change if you get a really good one. Spend whatever it takes to get what you want. The PSU is important because it needs to be future proof. Calculate (roughly) what you think you will need and add 100W on top of that and you'll be fine, even with later upgrades. The motherboard.. the more money you spend on it, the more future proof it'll be. It's pretty difficult to find the best there is, but again try to plan ahead. Will you need FireWire? Will you need eSATA? Will you need 1Gbit LAN? Will you need DDR3 slots? Stuff like that. My recommendations (personal preference only): Case: Antec P182 computer case PSU: Antec Truepower Quattro 850W Motherboard: MSI X48C Platinum The reasoning behind these three parts is simple. The Antec case is of good build quality, has lots of room and looks pretty. The Antec PSU is strong enough to support whatever you want to throw into the case and Newegg had a $30 rebate on those two Antec items together. The motherboard is a little more of a longshot. I've heard good things about MSI, but the reviews on Newegg disagrees. But the board has everything you need except built-in WiFi. It supports both DDR2 (which is what you're getting now) and DDR3 (which is what you're getting a year from now) and it's a performance beast. It also supports Crossfire (ATI multi-GPU) but not SLI (Nvidia equivalent). But right now ATI leads Nvidia in every way so that's more of a pro than a con. After that it's easy. Just buy whatever you can afford. The ATI Radeon 4870 1GB is excellent, for example. Samsung makes good screens. Keyboards can be had for like $10.. A mouse is best bought in a store since you want to feel it before buying it. Good luck!

When Oblivion came out, I was still using a 9800 Pro. That's the generation before the X-series, although at a higher price point (the X700 is slightly weaker than the X800, which would be the 9800 equivalent in the X-series). I was still able to run it with decent framerates. Since then they've probably upgraded the Genome engine quite a bit. It will definitely be a close call. I'd suggest you upgrade your GPU to at least an ATI Radeon 4670 (fantastic value for your money!), but the M in your CPU suggests we're talking about a laptop here, in which case you're stuck with what you've got.

There's a shining example of another weird nerd fad that annoys me: adding more fans does not a better case make! I usually start by turning off ALL the fans in the systems I build. If it gets too hot inside, I turn on the one I deem must be the most effective. If that doesn't help I turn on another one, and so on. It turns out that of the three fans pre-mounted in my P180, I only need ONE actually running and still have below 40 degrees Celsius inside the case. Much less noise and a couple of cables fewer.

That's one of the side-effects of getting nano-implants.. Yes, it's that immersive!!

Dinivity 2: Ego Draconis is starting to sound really good: "The lovely Dana asks you to deliver a private letter to the local blacksmith who you've been trading with. You could do her that favor, but instead you open the letter and learn that Dana has been cheating on her husband with the blacksmith. Of course, you return to Dana and blackmail her, demanding money for your silence. But Dana is a strong woman. She grabs the letter, shows it to her husband, says she is leaving him forever, and runs off to see the blacksmith. The husband sulks, alone. Consequently, the blacksmith will no longer trade with you. Larian estimates that there are 15 to 20 possible solutions for each quest in Divinity 2, no matter how large or small." I'm actually not too bothered by the change in aiming and regenerating health. Neither of those things (or lack thereof) was what made Deus Ex so great. I'm just hoping that Deus Ex 3 will provide an equally good story, a billion different ways to complete maps/missions and the same (admittedly fake) sense of freedom that Deus Ex provided. The biggest mistakes (in my opinion) that Deus Ex: Invisible War made was the decision to remove ammunition types, combine skills and augmentations and cramp up the maps. I think they called it "streamlining" the game.. If this new Deus Ex 3 has bigger maps, allows for some more character customization than Deus Ex: Invisible War and makes your equipment important again, I think it can be good.

Hmm.. I really hope the upgradeable weapons will weigh up the loss of stats influencing aim. I really liked the aiming in Deus Ex as it made it feel like a role playing game. Without it, it'll feel more like a shooter.. I think. Auto-heal? Guess there's no use for health packs or health bots then? Still.. better than unified ammo!
