  1. im in a chapter called Suburbs pretty sure that's not a spoiler also: i feel like im in some weird bizzarro world where there are people who sing the praises of metro while bashing resident evil 4. one of these games was an instant classic and was/is considered by many to be one of the best console games ever made, the other was a slightly below average first person shooter that i felt didn't pull off its raison d'etre as well as STALKER did several years before edit one billion: for funsies best resident evil games imo 1. RE4 2. Resident Evil 2 3. Code Veronica 4. RE 1 (gc version is the best version imo) 5. RE 5/RE 3 (its a tie, they both were meh) haven't played the rest, though I probably will play the most recent two (the one on the boat, and part 6) sometime in the next year or so. I didn't feel compelled to rush and play them right away since by all accounts neither of them have revolutionized (or even heavily evolved) any element of game design
  2. as a survival horror game, re4 wasn't particularly good. but as a video game, it was exceptional in virtually every way (except story...... unless you love camp). Last of Us doesn't quite hit that high mark in terms of video game execution, but it thankfully has a much better story also, re4 was casual and basic? I thought it was harder than resident evil 2 and i remember my first playthrough took over 30 hours. If re 4 was "casual and basic" then so was every other resident evil game side note: "casual and basic" has to be the most hollow and pointless sounding criticism I've ever heard. on par with "not immersive enough". It's like, you are saying words, but they have no meaning. edit: i just read your quotes describing witcher 2 as "casualized" and less ambitious than DA 2.... i take back what i said about "casual and basic" being the worst critique, and now replace that with the term "casualized" because that somehow manages to take a meaningless critique and make it sound even stupider. smh. unless you are a volo alt account, in which case I tip my hat to you sir, you got me.
  3. now 12 hours into The Last of Us, and a little over halfway through i think. looks like the game will be about 20 hours or so best survival/action/horror game since resident evil 4. but not quite as good as RE4 was on release. It has a major stealth component that RE4 did not have, and a little less emphasis on combat and gear. Interesting note: the game keeps getting better the longer i play it, very different than most modern games. i'll wait to make more updates until i finish the game
  4. myth imo never felt like a straight ripoff of black company, just that the writers must have been inspired by it in terms of tone and atmosphere
  5. also, bioshock infinite was kind of a mess, so maybe the heads are realizing that they would make a better game with a smaller team? i dunno, just spitballing edit: i just remembered that the game was a critic's darling, so maybe the people in charge have no idea that infinite kinda sucked.... anyone know the general gamer consensus on that game now that the dust has settled? I know i thought it was lousy, though I might be in the minority.
  6. also, its not really fair to dump criticism on Allan, he was neither the producer nor the lead designer of ME 3 or DA2 (or so he claims ) so I'm glad that most people who had complaints kept their issues to themselves
  7. I honestly can't believe ANYONE follows or cares about the lore in dragon age. from a storytelling and worldbuilding standpoint, its like an almost-mediocre fantasy series where the author keeps throwing ideas into the pot instead of fleshing out the best ideas they had when they started. demons exist, and the biggest ones are dragons dragons are demons and monsters and stupid like an animal but important because they symbolize stuff edit: please, for the love of all that is good in this world, do not try and explain the lore to me. i don't care, and am sick of reading about it.
  8. 4 more hours into The Last of Us new thoughts: the game feels very much like a survival horror game, but with sneaking. I'm getting used to moving so slowly, and when i stopped thinking of the game as "from the makers of uncharted" and started thinking of it like a continuation of the style of game found in classic survival horror like silent hill 1-2 or resident evil (without the puzzles!) it all started clicking a bit more for me. i'm 7 hours in, and guessing im not quite halfway done, but the game thankfully opens up a little bit in terms of exploration and level design after the first few extremely linear levels. I hope the trend continues into bigger and bigger levels as the game progresses but it remains to be seen. im not quite ready to gush about the game yet, the linearity and sluggish controls put me off early on, though slowly the game is winning me over. and finally, i must re-iterate: the atmosphere is exceptional, I haven't been this convinced by a video game world in a very long time. it often reminds me of how i felt playing half life 2 when it was released (in terms of the game world, not the game play).
  9. IGN is describing DA3 as "a medieval far cry 3"
  10. i remember doing that, as a DM, when i was 10. i learned my lesson that the players were not as big a fan of this form of deus ex as i was
  11. im about 3 hours into The Last of Us so far the atmosphere is impeccable, but the main character moves with the agility of a treadless tank. its kind of distracting, hopefully i get used to it. luckily the pace of the combat in the first few chapters is very very methodical and slow, so being so lumbering hasnt been as much of a hindrance as it seemed it would be. also a bit strange, the main character walks like his feet are made of lead, and yet he can sneak past people in broad daylight just by crouching. like a magically stealthy cat who just had it's 20th birthday and suffers from terrible arthritis definitely a "game" thats really more of a movie than anything else. but at least its a good movie
  12. i'd play it because heavy rain was awesome (though not as a full price game, imo its a worthy title at the $30 price point)
  13. Don't worry, I think you're misguided and wrong half of the time. only half?
  14. i dunno, you maybe should enjoy the love fest while it lasts
  15. i remember when, I can't remember which, but some big rpg came out a few years ago, and volourn was the only person in the thread about it that was making any sense (ie: the only person with whom i agreed). weird day.
  16. the biggest problem with the DA series is DAO, because that game feels more like an rpg, when bioware wants it to be an action series, with lots of talking. like mass effect. DAO keeps confusing people, lending them to believe that bioware might make part 3 or 5 into an rpg and that DA2 was a misstep when it was DAO that was the "misstep" all along edit: and lest anyone think im being snarky and criticizing bioware for making an action game, im not. i love action games.
  17. anor londo archers + medusa heads = suicide inducement scenario
  18. still playing Dark Arisen this game so good. im thinking about starting ANOTHER character just to try the mystic knight (since the magic archer turned out to be way more fun than i expected)
  19. i actually thought lords of shadow was pretty good. definitely my favorite god of war type game. as far as castlevania games go, its not in my top 5 (but dark souls is 1. circle of the moon 2. symphony of the night 3. dawn of sorrow 4. aria of sorrow 5. dark souls tee hee hee
  20. this thread is weird that horse is the final boss or something? things as big as a dragon...
  21. oh lionheart... poor poor lionheart
  22. alan wake sucked pretty hard i wrote a lot more on the topic a year or two ago, but yeah, not a good game.
  23. the outfit on that rogue lookin fella seems a tad flamboyant, but it could fit the character if he's supposed to be something of a gamblin man (ala setzer) also reminds me of jarlaxle with that over-the-top hat i try not to judge too many books by their cover etc, i thought the design for varric looked ridiculous, but he ended up being the best character in DA2 imo
  24. that origin news, being able to refund a game within 24 hours of launching it..... thats really cool and im an origin hater so yeah, good on them, it will make me feel less annoyed in the future taking a risk on an ea game (i wish they had made this possible a long time ago, i would have been so ready to refund ME3 within 24 hours of starting it, that game sucked)
  25. in a game where your party size is 4, i'd expect there to be at least 6 companion characters less than that would be too few, otherwise you could end up with weird things like "i need a rogue, but the only one available is beyond annoying, so now I have to play a rogue or suffer this awful character"
