Pictures of your Games Episode VIII The Fast - The Picturesque
Lexx replied to Rosbjerg's topic in Computer and Console
I would have liked a function to increase the difficulty manually in a sandbox game. At some point the game usually becomes too easy and you are lacking real challenges (or they constantly repeat), in which case it would have been great to just knock up the difficulty a lil bit. -

Is this Anno 1404? I kinda liked the game, but never played it a lot, because it somehow felt to me like it is missing complexity. Same actually for Anno 2070 - loved the looks & all that, but at some point it felt too simple to me. Especially with the dumb ai that was always doing exactly the same thing. -
What does "making it viable" mean anyway. Let's say I create a character and the only combat skill I am increasing is melee. Then I get into combat with ranged guys who own me. Now I cry how bad the balance in the game is. Doesn't that make me the idiot who uses melee in ranged combat (bringing a knife to a gun fight)? Do the developers really have to force the game to allow my stupid melee-only character in situations where ranged combat should be the only valid option? People assume that melee is not just a secondary combat skill for specific situations. Maybe it's the games fault for not explaining it well enough.. no idea. I don't think I've played enough PoE to have a good opinion on the combat system. In my 24 or so hours of playing it, combat mainly turned into "mark all & attack x" mosh pit.

Yet another example. Back when playing Fallout I didn't even expected melee to be completely viable from the beginning to the end of the game. It never crossed my mind that my character - who usually in every combat situation gets shot at from the distance - should be able to beat the game in melee only. For me, melee / unarmed was a "I am out of ammo and close to the enemy"-kind of combat skill. Not that useful most of the time, but that's what it is.

It's all really not that easy. Just because combat is crap, the game doesn't automatically become bad. I see all the people always arguing how bad combat in Fallout or Arcanum was, but honestly, up until nowadays tymes, I never even thought abou it- in fact, it didn't influenced my enjoyment with the games 10+ years ago a single bit. Maybe I even felt it was a positive thing to - at some point while playing - becoming so strong, I'd own the random encounters in half a minute. What always really hooked me up, was the general atmosphere in the game, the stories and the experiences, the unique encounters you could have (getting Dogmeat in Fo1 or the dog in Arcanum, first time ever seeing and interacting with a super mutant, etc) .. but never the amount of balance in combat. Maybe I am too old and have seen too much, but I don't think a game ever got me again as hard as talking to Lou for the first time after I accidentally got moved to the Mariposa Military base, completely unprepared and by surprise. And here is a spoiler: The following combat scene was completely unbalanced. :>

Well, I see it different than you people, because I create mods. Gamebryo is extremely powerful in this area, while the unreal engine is completely not.

I wouldn't mind a first person Arcanum like game. Could even see this being done with Bethsofts Crapengine.

I can understand the answer. If you haven't read up on all the codex drama and crying about Sawyer wanting to balance everything always, you might not know what exactly they ask here. /Edit: Just reading the interview. I've never before heard about a mobile fortress for Fo2 and these story elements. It actually sounds pretty awesome... and now suddenly it feels like even that was ripped off by Bethesda for their Enclave mobile command center in that one Fo3 DLC. God damnit. Suddenly I have the urge to continue working on my old Fo2 mod. Also that idea about hatching a deathclaw egg sounds awesome. So much better than what we got later on.

Kentucky Route Zero is pretty awesome for as far as I was able to play it. At some point there had been some kind of puzze that I just couldn't get past. Didn't looked it up and at some point completely forgot about it. Will pick it up again at some point, though. Really loving the atmosphere and stuff.

Yeah, I've calculated a bit back when this figstuff started and with my amateur skills it looks like this: Long time investment with a possibly low profit margin. Now considering how long the games are in development before release and then they (probably) aren't making that much money in return... Well, it seems to be more a thing for when you don't know what else to do with your money.

But you don't just invest with 20€ and I don't trust them enough to think about a larger sum. Also, I am no expert, but it isn't that easy and you can't "just" invest and be done with it, no?

It's yet another website that wants all our data. Not going to register there either. Not going to give any money anyway.

Can't play them either. The beginning with jumping from bad cutscene to bad cutscene was such a hard turn-off for me already.

The Fallout Sfall Timeslip or that's just a coincidence?

Started playing some Mount & Blade Warbands for a few hours and then switched to Fire and Sword. I can really see the awesome in this game, but it also has so many tiny flaws that annoy the hell out of me...

Why are they running and jumping and screaming so much. Jeeez, can't they chill...

It's under "Jensen Stories" - so exactly like the cut-out preorder mission. I guess I will pass and wait for a final "Director's Cut" version.

Apparently a new DX:MD DLC is out (the one with Pritchard) and people are hating on it, becaus it is like paid advertisement for that multiplayer thing nobody plays.

I still enjoyed the sewers in Bloodlines simply due to the lore placed in spots. Just goes to show, at least for me, that just a little bit of decent writing can go a long way. Too bad 99% of games can't even accomplish that. On retrospective I really wonder about the male Malkavian outfits, somehow they always seem to foreshadow events of the game. Pants only because of the beach, gas mask because of the plague, Hazmat suit because of sewers and party clothes because of the....party. Damn, I never noticed this. I mean, I never liked the clothes for the male Malkavian, but I also never thought much about it...

Wasn't it the one that came with a map editor? (read it in some very old pc magazine. That's pretty much the only reason I remember the name)
