My old school solid UI mock-up for Pillars of Eternity
Rostere replied to Grotesque's topic in Backer Beta Discussion
This is really super awesome and good looking. Obsidian should obtain your .psd files or what you've got and look at them to do something like this in-game. -

My old school solid UI mock-up for Pillars of Eternity

It pretty much ticks off everything on my list: Good size and placement for character portraits Log in middle Rest of stuff you can think of at the bottom Stuff that does not fit in bottom bar on left Solid, ornate, good-looking, theme suiting P:E Yeah, I bet there are details to fix, but the important stuff is there. -

I think what I like the best is that the character portraits have perfect size. -

It's awesome! THAT's how I want the P:E UI to look like! -
This sounds great. One of the most important points for me is that you have a fast, established pipeline for building areas for an expansion/sequel. As they say, content is king, and the more you are able to build, the better. If BG2 was released today, areas like Umar Hills, Trademeet, Windspear Hills and de'Arnise Hold would have been DLC. As things happened, Bioware were able to release BG2 with a lot of content, creating the illusion of a open world in a story-driven RPG - essentially getting the best of two worlds. It is my hope that you, with future releases, will be able to surpass this amount of parallel content in a game which beats BG2 on story (at least the latter I'm 100% sure Obsidian can achieve).

That's funny, I think of Civ 4's title track as one of the most in-your-face themes of all time. After hearing it once, you can hum it. When I first heard it I remember staying in the main menu listening to it about 4 times before moving on. Music does not need to be "loud and blaring" to be memorable, it needs to have a distinct and clear melody or rhythm. This for example is very memorable with an in-your-face melody that's not load and blaring: Anyways, what we've heard of the soundtrack so far is better than most games. And we'll only truly know what we think about it when we've heard it over and over again

It looks awesome. Only problems are that the log should be in the middle and portraits should be larger. -
New Engine?
Rostere replied to Aoha's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
I definitely want Obsidian to use the same engine for a sequel. That would minimize any time they have to waste on setting up the engine to begin with. For a PoE sequel, I would want every dime to go towards more content and nothing towards reinventing the wheel.- 76 replies

That's a quick, inital mock up. It is far from representative of the final artistic style. I was reminded of that comment because it looks so funny now that the new build is out: This is a personal opinion but I like my mockups better: Of course, what we have is still better than no solid background at all. I guess this is pretty much as good as it gets with a "bottom bar" UI. Great job!

The problem I would say is firstly of making a too simplistic division into "good" and "evil" to begin with. Secondly, it is also true that what we usually call "good" and "evil" comes with much different rewards in real life. If you're criminally selfish you will find yourself chased by the law. If you're unnecessarily altruistic you will often work without receiving any reward. In games, you instead receive a similar reward (red sword/ blue sword) regardless of your choice. Thus there's no way you can actually play a renegade at odds with society. Playing "evil" should be fundamentally different, gameplay-wise. You would be tempted with great rewards, with the risk of alienating yourself from people, completely shutting off some paths throughout the game. In the extreme case, this would end up like playing a Nosferatu in VtM:B. Playing "good" on the other hand, you would completely forsake the material rewards but instead gain the diffuse reward of having friends and allies in the game world.

So are you denying that the FSA fought in Kobane?
-
You should look at the other flags as well. There are the flags of Iraqi Kurdistan and PKK, who were also not main actors. They are there for the sake of accounting for all who contributed. In any case, any person seriously interested should probably not look at news graphics, but probably defer to the Wikipedia article for information on exactly who fought and how much. And one might also check out the map of the region which is updated almost daily with the current front lines. I understand however that you think the graphic would be awful for an uninitiated reader, who might get the impression that FSA contributed as much as the YPG/YPJ to the battle.

Which dev should PLAY at PAX East
Rostere replied to Sensuki's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
TBH I picked Tim Cain, just because he was so quiet during the last session. Let's put him to the test and see if he can handle PoE! In contrast to the people who thought Brennecke vs. the Beetles (IIRC?) was some kind of failure, I regard it as the best ad possible for the game. You can tell the game will not hold you by the hand if the developers themselves get whipped when playing it. -

Definitely Chris Avellone, if the game segment in question involves wolves. -

What do you mean by that? In any case, I know more right-wing anarchists than I know left-wing anarchists. The difference I guess is that they are not demonstrating in the streets but seem to prefer subverting the system from the inside.

Anarchism is widely considered left-wing. I have to disagree here... Anarchy could be considered left-wing or right-wing depending on implementation. Most people I know who are leaning in that direction comes from a right-wing perspective.

This sounds promising...
